In this work, the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) instability induced by a unipolar charge injection is extended from a single-phase dielectric liquid to a two-phase system that consists of a liquid-air interface. A volume of fluid (VOF) model based two-phase solver was developed with simplified Maxwell equations implemented in the open-source platform OpenFOAMtextsuperscript. The numerically obtained critical value for the linear stability matches well with the theoretical values. To highlight the effect of the slip boundary at interface, the deformation of the interface is ignored. A bifurcation diagram with hysteresis loop linking the linear and finite amplitude criteria, which is Uf = 0.059, was obtained in this situation. It is concluded that the lack of viscous effect at interface leads to a significant increase in the flow intensity, which is the reason for the smaller instability threshold in two-phase system. The presence of interface also changes the flow structure and makes the flow vortices shift closer to the interface.

The 1D hydrostatic base state of electroconvection driven by unipolar charge injection between two parallel electrodes is investigated using a finite difference method. A boundary layer near the anode surface is derived analytically. The computationa l grid is required to resolve this boundary layer to maintain high order accuracy.

The Tayler instability is a kink-type flow instability which occurs when the electrical current through a conducting fluid exceeds a certain critical value. Originally studied in the astrophysical context, the instability was recently shown to be als o a limiting factor for the upward scalability of liquid metal batteries. In this paper, we continue our efforts to simulate this instability for liquid metals within the framework of an integro-differential equation approach. The original solver is enhanced by multi-domain support with Dirichlet-Neumann partitioning for the static boundaries. Particular focus is laid on the detailed influence of the axial electrical boundary conditions on the characteristic features of the Tayler instability, and, secondly, on the occurrence of electro-vortex flows and their relevance for liquid metal batteries.
We present a modification of a recently developed volume of fluid method for multiphase problems, so that it can be used in conjunction with a fractional step-method and fast Poisson solver, and validate it with standard benchmark problems. We then c onsider emulsions of two-fluid systems and study their rheology in a plane Couette flow in the limit of vanishing inertia. We examine the dependency of the effective viscosity on the volume-fraction (from 10% to 30%) and the Capillary number (from 0.1 to 0.4) for the case of density and viscosity ratio 1. We show that the effective viscosity decreases with the deformation and the applied shear (shear-thinning) while exhibits a non-monotonic behavior with respect to the volume fraction. We report the appearance of a maximum in the effective viscosity curve and compare the results with those of suspensions of rigid and deformable particles and capsules. We show that the flow in the solvent is mostly a shear flow, while it is mostly rotational in the suspended phase; moreover this behavior tends to reverse as the volume fraction increases. Finally, we evaluate the contributions to the total shear stress of the viscous stresses in the two fluids and of the interfacial force between them.
A new type of instability - electrokinetic instability - and an unusual transition to chaotic motion near a charge-selective surface was studied by numerical integration of the Nernst-Planck-Poisson-Stokes system and a weakly nonlinear analysis near the threshold of instability. Two kinds of initial conditions were considered: (a) white noise initial conditions to mimic room disturbances and subsequent natural evolution of the solution; (b) an artificial monochromatic ion distribution with a fixed wave number to simulate regular wave patterns. The results were studied from the viewpoint of hydrodynamic stability and bifurcation theory. The threshold of electroconvective movement was found by the linear spectral stability theory, the results of which were confirmed by numerical simulation of the entire system. The following regimes, which replace each other as the potential drop between the selective surfaces increases, were obtained: one-dimensional steady solution; two-dimensional steady electroconvective vortices (stationary point in a proper phase space); unsteady vortices aperiodically changing their parameters (homoclinic contour); periodic motion (limit cycle); and chaotic motion. The transition to chaotic motion did not include Hopf bifurcation. Numerical resolution of the thin concentration polarization layer showed spike-like charge profiles along the surface, which could be, depending on the regime, either steady or aperiodically coalescent. The numerical investigation confirmed the experimentally observed absence of regular (near-sinusoidal) oscillations for the overlimiting regimes. There is a qualitative agreement of the experimental and the theoretical values of the threshold of instability, the dominant size of the observed coherent structures, and the experimental and theoretical volt-current characteristics.
We report the results of a complete modal and nonmodal linear stability analysis of the electrohydrodynamic flow (EHD) for the problem of electroconvection in the strong injection region. Convective cells are formed by Coulomb force in an insulating liquid residing between two plane electrodes subject to unipolar injection. Besides pure electroconvection, we also consider the case where a cross-flow is present, generated by a streamwise pressure gradient, in the form of a laminar Poiseuille flow. The effect of charge diffusion, often neglected in previous linear stability analyses, is included in the present study and a transient growth analysis, rarely considered in EHD, is carried out. In the case without cross-flow, a non-zero charge diffusion leads to a lower linear stability threshold and thus to a more unstable low. The transient growth, though enhanced by increasing charge diffusion, remains small and hence cannot fully account for the discrepancy of the linear stability threshold between theoretical and experimental results. When a cross-flow is present, increasing the strength of the electric field in the high-$Re$ Poiseuille flow yields a more unstable flow in both modal and nonmodal stability analyses. Even though the energy analysis and the input-output analysis both indicate that the energy growth directly related to the electric field is small, the electric effect enhances the lift-up mechanism. The symmetry of channel flow with respect to the centerline is broken due to the additional electric field acting in the wall-normal direction. As a result, the centers of the streamwise rolls are shifted towards the injector electrode, and the optimal spanwise wavenumber achieving maximum transient energy growth increases with the strength of the electric field.
