Data hiding is the process of embedding information into a noise-tolerant signal such as a piece of audio, video, or image. Digital watermarking is a form of data hiding where identifying data is robustly embedded so that it can resist tampering and be used to identify the original owners of the media. Steganography, another form of data hiding, embeds data for the purpose of secure and secret communication. This survey summarises recent developments in deep learning techniques for data hiding for the purposes of watermarking and steganography, categorising them based on model architectures and noise injection methods. The objective functions, evaluation metrics, and datasets used for training these data hiding models are comprehensively summarised. Finally, we propose and discuss possible future directions for research into deep data hiding techniques.

Data hiding is the art of concealing messages with limited perceptual changes. Recently, deep learning has provided enriching perspectives for it and made significant progress. In this work, we conduct a brief yet comprehensive review of existing lit erature and outline three meta-architectures. Based on this, we summarize specific strategies for various applications of deep hiding, including steganography, light field messaging and watermarking. Finally, further insight into deep hiding is provided through incorporating the perspective of adversarial attack.
Information security is a critical issue in modern society and image watermarking can effectively prevent unauthorized information access. Optical image watermarking techniques generally have advantages of parallel high-speed processing and multi-dim ensional capabilities compared with digital approaches. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the research works related to optical image hiding and watermarking techniques conducted in the past decade. The past research works are focused on two major aspects, various optical systems for image hiding and the methods for embedding optical system output into a host image. A summary of the state-of-the-art works is made from these two perspectives.
The widespread application of audio communication technologies has speeded up audio data flowing across the Internet, which made it a popular carrier for covert communication. In this paper, we present a cross-modal steganography method for hiding im age content into audio carriers while preserving the perceptual fidelity of the cover audio. In our framework, two multi-stage networks are designed: the first network encodes the decreasing multilevel residual errors inside different audio subsequences with the corresponding stage sub-networks, while the second network decodes the residual errors from the modified carrier with the corresponding stage sub-networks to produce the final revealed results. The multi-stage design of proposed framework not only make the controlling of payload capacity more flexible, but also make hiding easier because of the gradual sparse characteristic of residual errors. Qualitative experiments suggest that modifications to the carrier are unnoticeable by human listeners and that the decoded images are highly intelligible.
Protecting the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) associated to Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is a pressing need pushed by the high costs required to train such networks and the importance that DNNs are gaining in our society. Following its use for Mul timedia (MM) IPR protection, digital watermarking has recently been considered as a mean to protect the IPR of DNNs. While DNN watermarking inherits some basic concepts and methods from MM watermarking, there are significant differences between the two application areas, calling for the adaptation of media watermarking techniques to the DNN scenario and the development of completely new methods. In this paper, we overview the most recent advances in DNN watermarking, by paying attention to cast it into the bulk of watermarking theory developed during the last two decades, while at the same time highlighting the new challenges and opportunities characterizing DNN watermarking. Rather than trying to present a comprehensive description of all the methods proposed so far, we introduce a new taxonomy of DNN watermarking and present a few exemplary methods belonging to each class. We hope that this paper will inspire new research in this exciting area and will help researchers to focus on the most innovative and challenging problems in the field.
A digital micromirror device (DMD) is an amplitude-type spatial light modulator. However, a complex-amplitude light modulation with a DMD can be achieved using the superpixel scheme. In the superpixel scheme, we notice that multiple different DMD loc al block patterns may correspond to the same complex superpixel value. Based on this inherent encoding redundancy, a large amount of external data can be embedded into the DMD pattern without extra cost. Meanwhile, the original complex light field information carried by the DMD pattern is fully preserved. This proposed scheme is favorable for applications such as secure information transmission and copyright protection.
