The nondipole under-the-barrier dynamics of the electron during strong-field tunneling ionization is investigated, examining the role of the Coulomb field of the atomic core. The common analysis in the strong field approximation is consequently generalised to include the leading light-front non-dipole Coulomb corrections and demonstrates the counter-intuitive impact of the sub-barrier Coulomb field. Despite its attractive nature, the sub-barrier Coulomb field increases the photoelectron nondipole momentum shift along the laser propagation direction, involving a strong dependence on the laser field. The scaling of the effect with respect to the principal quantum number and angular momentum of the bound state is found. With an improved light-front classical Monte Carlo model, we disentangle sub-barrier and continuum Coulomb effects in the nondipole regime. We demonstrate that the signature of Coulomb induced sub-barrier effects can be identified in the asymptotic photoelectron momentum distribution with state-of-the-art experimental techniques of mid-infrared lasers.

The problem of Freeman resonances [R. R. Freeman textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. textbf{59}, 1092 (1987)] when strong field ionization is enhanced due to the transient population of excited states during the ionization, is revisited. An intuitive mo del is put forward which explains the mechanism of the intermediate population of excited states during nonadiabatic tunneling ionization via the under-the-barrier recollision and recombination. The theoretical model is based on perturbative strong-field approximation (SFA), where the sub-barrier bound-continuum-bound pathway is described in the second-order SFA, while the further ionization from the excited state by an additional perturbative step. The enhancement of ionization is shown to arise due to the constructive interference of contributions into the excitation amplitudes originating from different laser cycles. The applied model provides an intuitive understanding of the electron dynamics during a Freeman resonance in strong-field ionization, as well as means of enhancing the process and possible applications to related processes.
Strong-field ionization of atoms by circularly polarized femtosecond laser pulses produces a donut-shaped electron momentum distribution. Within the dipole approximation this distribution is symmetric with respect to the polarization plane. The magne tic component of the light field is known to shift this distribution forward. Here, we show that this magnetic non-dipole effect is not the only non-dipole effect in strong-field ionization. We find that an electric non-dipole effect arises that is due to the position dependence of the electric field and which can be understood in analogy to the Doppler effect. This electric non-dipole effect manifests as an increase of the radius of the donut-shaped photoelectron momentum distribution for forward-directed momenta and as a decrease of this radius for backwards-directed electrons. We present experimental data showing this fingerprint of the electric non-dipole effect and compare our findings with a classical model and quantum calculations.
Penning ionization reactions in merged beams with precisely controlled collision energies have been shown to accurately probe quantum mechanical effects in reactive collisions. A complete microscopic understanding of the reaction is, however, faced w ith two major challenges---the highly excited character of the reactions entrance channel and the limited precision of even the best state-of-the-art ab initio potential energy surfaces. Here, we suggest photoassociation spectroscopy as a tool to identify the character of orbiting resonances in the entrance channel and probe the ionization width as a function of inter-particle separation. We introduce the basic concept and discuss the general conditions under which this type of spectroscopy will be successful.

We investigate the influence of relativistic nondipole effects on the photoelectron spectra of argon, particularly in the low kinetic energy region (0 eV - 5 eV). In our experiment, we use intense linearly polarised 800 nm laser pulse to ionise Ar fr om a jet and we record photoelectron energy and momentum distributions using a reaction microscope (REMI). Our measurements show that nondipole effect can cause an energy-dependent asymmetry along the laser propagation direction in the photoelectron energy and momentum spectra. Model simulation based on time-dependent Dirac equation (TDDE) can reproduce our measurement results. The electron trajectory analysis based on classical model reveals that the photoelectron which obtains negative momentum shift along laser propagation direction is caused by the interplay between the Lorenz force induced radiation pressure during its free propagation in continuum and re-scattering by Coulomb potential of the parent ion when it is driven back by the laser field.

We analyze two-photon double ionization of helium in both the nonsequential and sequential regime. We show that the energy spacing between the two emitted electrons provides the key parameter that controls both the energy and the angular distribution and reveals the universal features present in both the nonsequential and sequential regime. This universality, i.e., independence of photon energy, is a manifestation of the continuity across the threshold for sequential double ionization. For all photon energies, the energy distribution can be described by a universal shape function that contains only the spectral and temporal information entering second-order time-dependent perturbation theory. Angular correlations and distributions are found to be more sensitive to the photon energy. In particular, shake-up interferences have a large effect on the angular distribution. Energy spectra, angular distributions parameterized by the anisotropy parameters, and total cross sections presented in this paper are obtained by fully correlated time-dependent ab initio calculations.
