It has been proposed that an extended version of the Hubbard model which potentially hosts rich possibilities of correlated physics may be well simulated by the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) moir{e} heterostructures. Motivated by recent reports of continuous metal insulator transition (MIT) at half filling, as well as correlated insulators at various fractional fillings in TMD moir{e} heterostructures, we propose a theory for the potentially continuous MIT with fractionalized electric charges. The charge fractionalization at the MIT will lead to experimental observable effects, such as a large universal resistivity jump and interaction driven bad metal at the MIT, as well as special scaling of the quasi-particle weight with the tuning parameter. These predictions are different from previously proposed theory for continuous MIT.

We report x-ray scattering studies of the c-axis lattice parameter in Ca3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. These structural studies complement published transport and magnetization data, and therefore elucidate the spin-charge-la ttice coupling near the metal-insulator transition. Strong anisotropy of the structural change for field applied along orthogonal in-plane directions is observed. Competition between a spin-polarized phase that does not couple to the lattice, and an antiferromagnetic metallic phase, which does, gives rise to rich behavior for B $parallel$ b.

The charge response in the barium vanadium sulfide (BaVS3) single crystals is characterized by dc resistivity and low frequency dielectric spectroscopy. A broad relaxation mode in MHz range with huge dielectric constant ~= 10^6 emerges at the metal-t o-insulator phase transition TMI ~= 67 K, weakens with lowering temperature and eventually levels off below the magnetic transition Tchi ~= 30 K. The mean relaxation time is thermally activated in a manner similar to the dc resistivity. These features are interpreted as signatures of the collective charge excitations characteristic for the orbital ordering that gradually develops below TMI and stabilizes at long-range scale below Tchi.
X-ray and electron diffraction measurements on the metal-insulator (M-I) transition compound PrRu$_4$P$_{12}$ have revealed the emergence of a periodic ordering of charge density around the Pr atoms. It is found that the ordering is associated with t he onset of a low temperature insulator phase. These conclusions are supported by the facts that the space group of the crystal structure transforms from Im$bar{3}$ to Pm$bar{3}$ below the M-I transition temperature and also that the temperature dependence of the superlattice peaks in the insulator phase follows the squared BCS function. The M-I transition could be originated from the perfect nesting of the Fermi surface and/or the instability of the $f$ electrons.
Higher accuracy low temperature charge transport measurements in combination with precise X-ray diffraction experiment have allowed detecting the symmetry lowering in the single domain Tm0.19Yb0.81B12 crystals of the family of dodecaborides with meta l-insulator transition. Basing on the fine structure analysis we discover formation of dynamic charge stripes within the semiconducting matrix of Tm0.19Yb0.81B12. The charge dynamics in these metallic nano-size conducting channels is characterized by broad-band optical spectroscopy that allowed estimating the frequency (~2.4 10^11 Hz) of quantum motion of the charge carriers. It is suggested that caused by cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the boron sub-lattice, the large amplitude rattling modes of the Tm and Yb ions are responsible for modulation of the conduction band along [110] direction through the variation of 5d-2p hybridization of electron states.

It is well-known that magnetic impurities can change the symmetry class of disordered metallic systems by breaking spin and time-reversal symmetry. At low temperature these symmetries can be restored by Kondo screening. It is also known that at the A nderson metal-insulator transition, wave functions develop multifractal fluctuations with power law correlations. Here, we consider the interplay of these two effects. We show that multifractal correlations open local pseudogaps at the Fermi energy at some random positions in space. When dilute magnetic impurities are at these locations, Kondo screening is strongly suppressed. We find that when the exchange coupling J is smaller than a certain value J*, the metal-insulator transition point extends to a critical region in the disorder strength parameter and to a band of critical states. The width of this critical region increases with a power of the concentration of magnetic impurities.
