We study the influence of hesitating agents in the Axelrod model by introducing an intrinsic noise, which is proportional to the disagreement between the interacting agents, and thus coupled to the dynamics. Our results show that, unlike the effect of the cultural drift where the noise is just controlled by an external parameter, the intrinsic noise never allows the system to reach a frozen state in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, we show that when the intrinsic noise affects the agents variables, the systems behaviour is also different from the case when it affects the network of their interactions.

We propose a thermodynamic version of the Axelrod model of social influence. In one-dimensional (1D) lattices, the thermodynamic model becomes a coupled Potts model with a bonding interaction that increases with the site matching traits. We analytica lly calculate thermodynamic and critical properties for a 1D system and show that an order-disorder phase transition only occurs at T = 0 independent of the number of cultural traits q and features F. The 1D thermodynamic Axelrod model belongs to the same universality class of the Ising and Potts models, notwithstanding the increase of the internal dimension of the local degree of freedom and the state-dependent bonding interaction. We suggest a unifying proposal to compare exponents across different discrete 1D models. The comparison with our Hamiltonian description reveals that in the thermodynamic limit the original out-of-equilibrium 1D Axelrod model with noise behaves like an ordinary thermodynamic 1D interacting particle system.
The majority-vote model with noise is one of the simplest nonequilibrium statistical model that has been extensively studied in the context of complex networks. However, the relationship between the critical noise where the order-disorder phase trans ition takes place and the topology of the underlying networks is still lacking. In the paper, we use the heterogeneous mean-field theory to derive the rate equation for governing the models dynamics that can analytically determine the critical noise $f_c$ in the limit of infinite network size $Nrightarrow infty$. The result shows that $f_c$ depends on the ratio of ${leftlangle k rightrangle }$ to ${leftlangle k^{3/2} rightrangle }$, where ${leftlangle k rightrangle }$ and ${leftlangle k^{3/2} rightrangle }$ are the average degree and the $3/2$ order moment of degree distribution, respectively. Furthermore, we consider the finite size effect where the stochastic fluctuation should be involved. To the end, we derive the Langevin equation and obtain the potential of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. This allows us to calculate the effective critical noise $f_c(N)$ at which the susceptibility is maximal in finite size networks. We find that the $f_c-f_c(N)$ decays with $N$ in a power-law way and vanishes for $Nrightarrow infty$. All the theoretical results are confirmed by performing the extensive Monte Carlo simulations in random $k$-regular networks, Erdos-Renyi random networks and scale-free networks.
The voter model with memory-dependent dynamics is theoretically and numerically studied at the mean-field level. The `internal age, or time an individual spends holding the same state, is added to the set of binary states of the population, such that the probability of changing state (or activation probability $p_i$) depends on this age. A closed set of integro-differential equations describing the time evolution of the fraction of individuals with a given state and age is derived, and from it analytical results are obtained characterizing the behavior of the system close to the absorbing states. In general, different age-dependent activation probabilities have different effects on the dynamics. When the activation probability $p_i$ is an increasing function of the age $i$, the system reaches a steady state with coexistence of opinions. In the case of aging, with $p_i$ being a decreasing function, either the system reaches consensus or it gets trapped in a frozen state, depending on the value of $p_infty$ (zero or not) and the velocity of $p_i$ approaching $p_infty$. Moreover, when the system reaches consensus, the time ordering of the system can be exponential ($p_infty>0$) or power-law like ($p_infty=0$). Exact conditions for having one or another behavior, together with the equations and explicit expressions for the exponents, are provided.
In this work we study a modified Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model in which the infection rate $lambda$ decays exponentially with the number of reinfections $n$, saturating after $n=l$. We find a critical decaying rate $epsilon_{c}(l)$ abo ve which a finite fraction of the population becomes permanently infected. From the mean-field solution and computer simulations on hypercubic lattices we find evidences that the upper critical dimension is 6 like in the SIR model, which can be mapped in ordinary percolation.
We study the Axelrods cultural adaptation model using the concept of cluster size entropy, $S_{c}$ that gives information on the variability of the cultural cluster size present in the system. Using networks of different topologies, from regular to r andom, we find that the critical point of the well-known nonequilibrium monocultural-multicultural (order-disorder) transition of the Axelrod model is unambiguously given by the maximum of the $S_{c}(q)$ distributions. The width of the cluster entropy distributions can be used to qualitatively determine whether the transition is first- or second-order. By scaling the cluster entropy distributions we were able to obtain a relationship between the critical cultural trait $q_c$ and the number $F$ of cultural features in regular networks. We also analyze the effect of the mass media (external field) on social systems within the Axelrod model in a square network. We find a new partially ordered phase whose largest cultural cluster is not aligned with the external field, in contrast with a recent suggestion that this type of phase cannot be formed in regular networks. We draw a new $q-B$ phase diagram for the Axelrod model in regular networks.
