The interaction between an atomic ensemble and a light mode in a high-finesse optical cavity can easily reach the strong-coupling regime, where quantum effects dominate. In this regime, the interaction can be used to generate both atom-light and atom-atom entanglement. We analyze the dominant effects on the collective atomic state and the light field, and derive a unified approach that can account for atomic entanglement induced both by measurements on the light field, and by ignoring the state of the light field altogether. We present analytical expressions for the entanglement induced by the interaction, and determine the conditions that maximize the entanglement-induced gain over the standard quantum limit in quantum sensors and atomic clocks.

When applying a red-detuned retro-reflected laser beam to a large cloud of cold atoms, we observe the spontaneous formation of 2D structures in the transverse plane corresponding to high contrast spatial modulations of both light field and atomic spi ns. By applying a weak magnetic field, we explore the rich resulting phase space and identify specific phases associated with both dipolar and quadrupolar terms of the atomic magnetic moment. In particular we demonstrate spontaneous structures in optically induced ground state coherences representing magnetic quadrupoles.
We describe a dispersive Faraday optical probe of atomic spin which performs a weak measurement of spin projection of a quantum gas continuously for more than one second. To date focusing bright far-off-resonance probes onto quantum gases has proved invasive, due to strong scalar and vector light shifts exerting dipole and Stern-Gerlach forces. We show that tuning the probe near the magic-zero wavelength at 790 nm between the fine-structure doublet of $^{87}$Rb cancels the scalar light shift, and careful control of polarization eliminates the vector light shift. Faraday rotations due to each fine-structure line reinforce at this wavelength, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio for a fixed rate of probe-induced decoherence. Using this minimally-invasive spin probe we perform microscale atomic magnetometry at high temporal resolution. Spectrogram analysis of the Larmor precession signal of a single spinor Bose-Einstein condensate measures a time-varying magnetic field strength with 1 {mu}G accuracy every 5 ms; or equivalently makes > 200 successive measurements each at $10,mathrm{pT/sqrt{Hz}}$ sensitivity.
We propose a new method for generating programmable interactions in one- and two-dimensional trapped-ion quantum simulators. Here we consider the use of optical tweezers to engineer the sound-wave spectrum of trapped ion crystals. We show that this a pproach allows us to tune the interactions and connectivity of the ion qubits beyond the power-law interactions accessible in current setups. We demonstrate the experimental feasibility of our proposal using realistic tweezer settings and experimentally relevant trap parameters to generate the optimal tweezer patterns to create target spin-spin interaction patterns in both one- and two-dimensional crystals. Our approach will advance quantum simulation in trapped-ion platforms as it allows them to realize a broader family of quantum spin Hamiltonians.
Ultranarrow-linewidth atoms coupled to a lossy optical cavity mode synchronize, i.e. develop correlations, and exhibit steady-state superradiance when continuously repumped. This type of system displays rich collective physics and promises metrologic al applications. These features inspire us to investigate if analogous spin synchronization is possible in a different platform that is one of the most robust and controllable experimental testbeds currently available: ion-trap systems. We design a system with a primary and secondary species of ions that share a common set of normal modes of vibration. In analogy to the lossy optical mode, we propose to use a lossy normal mode, obtained by sympathetic cooling with the secondary species of ions, to mediate spin synchronization in the primary species of ions. Our numerical study shows that spin-spin correlations develop, leading to a macroscopic collective spin in steady-state. We propose an experimental method based on Ramsey interferometry to detect signatures of this collective spin; we predict that correlations prolong the visibility of Ramsey fringes, and that population statistics at the end of the Ramsey sequence can be used to directly infer spin-spin correlations.
We report direct observations of photon-mediated spin-exchange interactions in an atomic ensemble. Interactions extending over a distance of 500 microns are generated within a cloud of cold rubidium atoms coupled to a single mode of light in an optic al resonator. We characterize the system via quench dynamics and imaging of the local magnetization, verifying the coherence of the interactions and demonstrating optical control of their strength and sign. Furthermore, by initializing the spin-1 system in the mF = 0 Zeeman state, we observe correlated pair creation in the mF = +/- 1 states, a process analogous to spontaneous parametric down-conversion and to spin mixing in Bose-Einstein condensates. Our work opens new opportunities in quantum simulation with long-range interactions and in entanglement-enhanced metrology.
