It has been hypothesized that the variation of the critical currents in Nb/Al-AlO$_x$/Nb junctions is due to, among other effects, the presence of grain boundaries in the system. Motivated by this, we examine the effect of grain boundaries on the critical current of a Josephson junction. We assume that the hopping amplitudes are dependent on the interatomic distance, and derive a physically realistic model of distance-dependent hopping amplitudes. We find that the presence of a grain boundary and associated disorder is responsible for a very large drop in the critical current relative to a clean system. We also find that when a tunnel barrier is present, grain boundaries cause substantial variation in the critical currents due to the disordered hoppings near the tunnel barrier. We discuss the applicability of these results to Josephson junctions presently intended for use in superconducting electronics applications.

We consider theoretically and numerically magnetic field dependencies of the maximum supercurrent across Josephson tunnel junctions with spatially alternating critical current density. We find that two flux-penetration fields and one-splinter-vortex equilibrium state exist in long junctions.

We treat theoretically Shapiro steps in tunnel Josephson junctions with spatially alternating critical current density. Explicit analytical formulas for the width of the first integer (normal) and half-integer (anomalous) Shapiro steps are derived fo r short junctions. We develop coarse-graining approach, which describes Shapiro steps in the voltage-current curves of the asymmetric grain boundaries in YBCO thin films and different superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson-type heterostructures.
We have theoretically studied the supercurrent profiles in three-dimensional normal metal and ferromagnetic Josephson configurations, where the magnitude of the superconducting gaps in the superconducting leads are unequal, i.e., $Delta_1 eq Delta_2$ , creating asymmetric $S_1NS_2$ and $S_1FS_2$ systems. Our results reveal that by increasing the ratio of the superconducting gaps $Delta_2/Delta_1$, the critical supercurrent in a ballistic $S_1NS_2$ system can be enhanced by more than $100%$, and reaches a saturation point, or decays away, depending on the junction thickness, magnetization strength, and chemical potential. The total critical current in a diffusive $S_1NS_2$ system was found to be enhanced by more than $50%$ parabolically, and reaches saturation by increasing one of the superconducting gaps. In a uniform ferromagnetic junction, the supercurrent undergoes reversal by increasing $Delta_2/Delta_1>1$. Through decomposing the total supercurrent into its supergap and subgap components, our results illustrate their crucial relative contributions to the Josephson current flow. It was found that the competition of subgap and supergap currents in a $S_1FS_2$ junction results in the emergence of second harmonics in the current-phase relation. In contrast to a diffusive asymmetric Josephson configuration, the behavior of the supercurrent in a ballistic system with $Delta_2/Delta_1=1$ can be properly described by the subgap current component only, in a wide range of parameter sets, including Fermi level mismatch, magnetization strength, and junction thickness. Interestingly, when $Delta_2/Delta_1>1$, our results have found multiple parameter sets where the total supercurrent is driven by the supergap component. Therefore, our comprehensive study highlights the importance of subgap and supergap supercurrent components in both the ballistic and diffusive regimes.

We study long Josephson junctions with the critical current density alternating along the junction. New equilibrium states, which we call the field synchronized or FS states, are shown to exist if the applied field is from narrow intervals centered a round equidistant series of resonant fields, $H_m$. The values of $H_m$ are much higher than the flux penetration field, $H_s$. The flux per period of the alternating critical current density, $phi_i$, is fixed for each of the FS states. In the $m$-th FS state the value of $phi_i$ is equal to an integer amount of flux quanta, $phi_i =mphi_0$. Two types of single Josephson vortices carrying fluxes $phi_0$ or/and $phi_0/2$ can exist in the FS states. Specific stepwise resonances in the current-voltage characteristics are caused by periodic motion of these vortices between the edges of the junction.
Magneto-fluctuations of the normal resistance R_N have been reproducibly observed in high critical temp erature superconductor (HTS) grain boundary junctions, at low temperatures. We attribute them to mesoscopic transport in narrow channels across th e grain boundary line. The Thouless energy appears to be the relevant energy scale. Our findings have significant implications on quasiparticle relaxation and coherent transport in HTS grain boundaries.
