In this paper we deal with the problem of determining perfectly insulating regions (cavities) from boundary measurements in a nonlinear elliptic equation arising from cardiac electrophysiology. With minimal regularity assumptions on the cavities, we first show well-posedness of the direct problem and then prove uniqueness of the inverse problem. Finally, we propose a new reconstruction algorithm by means of a phase-field approach rigorously justified via $Gamma$-convergence.

In this paper we provide a representation formula for boundary voltage perturbations caused by internal conductivity inhomogeneities of low volume fraction in a simplified {em monodomain model} describing the electric activity of the heart. We derive such a result in the case of a nonlinear problem. Our long-term goal is the solution of the inverse problem related to the detection of regions affected by heart ischemic disease, whose position and size are unknown. We model the presence of ischemic regions in the form of small inhomogeneities. This leads to the study of a boundary value problem for a semilinear elliptic equation. We first analyze the well-posedness of the problem establishing some key energy estimates. These allow us to derive rigorously an asymptotic formula of the boundary potential perturbation due to the presence of the inhomogeneities, following an approach similar to the one introduced by Capdeboscq and Vogelius in cite{capvoge} in the case of the linear conductivity equation. Finally, we propose some ideas of the reconstruction procedure that might be used to detect the inhomogeneities.
We investigate the problem of dimension reduction for plates in nonlinear magnetoelasticity. The model features a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation, as magnetizations are defined on the deformed set in the actual space. We consider low-energy con figurations by rescaling the elastic energy according to the linearized von K{a}rm{a}n regime. First, we identify a reduced model by computing the $Gamma$-limit of the magnetoelastic energy, as the thickness of the plate goes to zero. This extends a previous result obtained by the first author in the incompressible case to the compressible one. Then, we introduce applied loads given by mechanical forces and external magnetic fields and we prove that, under clamped boundary conditions, sequences of almost minimizes of the total energy converge to minimizers of the corresponding energy in the reduced model. Subsequently, we study quasistatic evolutions driven by time-dependent applied loads and a rate-independent dissipation. We prove that solutions of the approximate incremental minimization problem at the bulk converge to energetic solutions for the reduced model. This result provides a further justification of the latter in the spirit of evolutionary $Gamma$-convergence.
We consider the quadratic Schrodinger system $$iu_t+Delta_{gamma_1}u+overline{u}v=0$$ $$2iv_t+Delta_{gamma_2}v-beta v+frac 12 u^2=0,$$ where $tinmathbf{R},,xin mathbf{R}^dtimes mathbf{R}$, in dimensions $1leq dleq 4$ and for $gamma_1,gamma_2>0$, th e so-called elliptic-elliptic case. We show the formation of singularities and blow-up in the $L^2$-(super)critical case. Furthermore, we derive several stability results concerning the ground state solutions of this system.
In this paper, we study a free boundary problem, which arises from an optimal trading problem of a stock that is driven by a uncertain market status process. The free boundary problem is a variational inequality system of three functions with a degen erate operator. The main contribution of this paper is that we not only prove all the four switching free boundaries are no-overlapping, monotonic and $C^{infty}$-smooth, but also completely determine their relative localities and provide the optimal trading strategies for the stock trading problem.
We consider a coupled bulk-surface system of partial differential equations with nonlinear coupling modelling receptor-ligand dynamics. The model arises as a simplification of a mathematical model for the reaction between cell surface resident recept ors and ligands present in the extra-cellular medium. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions. We also consider a number of biologically relevant asymptotic limits of the model. We prove convergence to limiting problems which take the form of free boundary problems posed on the cell surface. We also report on numerical simulations illustrating convergence to one of the limiting problems as well as the spatio-temporal distributions of the receptors and ligands in a realistic geometry.
