We propose a semi-classical approach based on the Vlasov equation to describe the time-dependent electronic dynamics in a bulk simple metal under an ultrashort intense laser pulse. We include in the effective potential not only the ionic Coulomb potential and mean-field electronic Coulomb potential from the one-body electron distribution but also the exchange-correlation potential within the local density approximation (LDA). The initial ground state is obtained by the Thomas-Fermi model. To numerically solve the Vlasov equation, we extend the pseudo-particle method, previously used for nuclei and atomic clusters, to solids, taking the periodic boundary condition into account. We apply the present implementation to a bulk aluminum (FCC) conventional unit cell irradiated with a short laser pulse. The optical conductivity, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and reflectivity as well as energy absorption calculated with the Vlasov-LDA method are in excellent agreement with the results by the time-dependent density functional theory and experimental references.

Oblique incidence of a $p$-polarized laser beam on a fully ionized plasma with a low density plasma corona is investigated numerically by Particle-In-Cell and Vlasov simulations in two dimensions. A single narrow self-focused current jet of energetic electrons is observed to be projected into the corona nearly normal to the target. Magnetic fields enhance the penetration depth of the electrons into the corona. A scaling law for the angle of the ejected electrons with incident laser intensity is given.

We study the ionization dynamics in intense laser-droplet interaction using three-dimensional, relativistic particle-in-cell simulations. Of particular interest is the laser intensity and frequency regime for which initially transparent, wavelength-s ized targets are not homogeneously ionized. Instead, the charge distribution changes both in space and in time on a sub-cycle scale. One may call this the extreme nonlinear Mie-optics regime. We find that - despite the fact that the plasma created at the droplet surface is overdense - oscillating electric fields may penetrate into the droplet under a certain angle, ionize, and propagate in the just generated plasma. This effect can be attributed to the local field enhancements at the droplet surface predicted by standard Mie theory. The penetration of the fields into the droplet leads to the formation of a highly inhomogeneous charge density distribution in the droplet interior, concentrated mostly in the polarization plane. We present a self-similar, exponential fit of the fractional ionization degree which depends only on a dimensionless combination of electric field amplitude, droplet radius, and plasma frequency with only a weak dependence on the laser frequency in the overdense regime.

We consider the theoretical description of intense laser pulses propagating through gases. Starting from a first-principles description of both the electromagnetic field and the electron motion within the gas atoms, we derive a hierarchy of reduced m odels. We obtain a parallel set of models, where the atomic electrons are treated classically on the one hand, and quantum-mechanically on the other. By working consistently in either a Lagrangian formulation or a Hamiltonian formulation, we ensure that our reduced models preserve the variational structure of the parent models. Taking advantage of the Hamiltonian formulation, we deduce a number of conserved quantities of the reduced models.
A microtube implosion driven by ultraintense laser pulses is used to produce ultrahigh magnetic fields. Due to the laser-produced hot electrons with energies of mega-electron volts, cold ions in the inner wall surface implode towards the central axis . By pre-seeding uniform magnetic fields on the kilotesla order, the Lorenz force induces the Larmor gyromotion of the imploding ions and electrons. Due to the resultant collective motion of relativistic charged particles around the central axis, strong spin current densities of ~ peta-ampere/cm2 are produced with a few tens of nm size, generating megatesla-order magnetic fields. The underlying physics and important scaling are revealed by particle simulations and a simple analytical model. The concept holds promise to open new frontiers in many branches of fundamental physics and applications in terms of ultrahigh magnetic fields.
Producing inward orientated streams of energetic electrons by intense laser pulses acting on solid targets is the most robust and accessible way of transferring the laser energy to particles, which underlies numerous applications, ranging from TNSA t o laboratory astrophysics. Structures with the scale of the laser wavelength can significantly enhance energy absorption, which has been in the center of attention in recent studies. In this article, we demonstrate and assess the effect of the structures for widening the angular distribution of generated energetic electrons. We analyse the results of PIC simulations and reveal several aspects that can be important for the related applications.
