Software process improvement (SPI) is a means to an end, not an end in itself (e.g., a goal is to achieve shorter time to market and not just compliance to a process standard). Therefore, SPI initiatives ought to be streamlined to meet the desired values for an organization. Through a literature review, seven secondary studies aggregating maturity models and assessment frameworks were identified. Furthermore, we identified six proposals for building a new maturity model. We analyzed the existing maturity models for (a) their purpose, structure, guidelines, and (b) the degree to which they explicitly consider values and benefits. Based on this analysis and utilizing the guidelines from the proposals to build maturity models, we have introduced an approach for developing a value-driven approach for SPI. The proposal leveraged the benefits-dependency networks. We argue that our approach enables the following key benefits: (a) as a value-driven approach, it streamlines value-delivery and helps to avoid unnecessary process interventions, (b) as a knowledge-repository, it helps to codify lessons learned i.e. whether adopted practices lead to value realization, and (c) as an internal process maturity assessment tool, it tracks the progress of process realization, which is necessary to monitor progress towards the intended values.

Software testing is normally used to check the validity of a program. Test oracle performs an important role in software testing. The focus in this research is to perform class level test by introducing a testing framework. A technique is developed t o generate test oracle for specification-based software testing using Vienna Development Method (VDM++) formal language. A three stage translation process, of VDM++ specifications of container classes to C++ test oracle classes, is described in this paper. It is also presented that how derived test oracle is integrated into a proposed functional testing framework. This technique caters object oriented features such as inheritance and aggregation, but concurrency is not considered in this work. Translation issues, limitations and evaluation of the technique are also discussed. The proposed approach is illustrated with the help of popular triangle problem case study.
For software to be reliable and resilient, it is widely accepted that tests must be created and maintained alongside the software itself. One safeguard from vulnerabilities and failures in code is to ensure correct behavior on the boundaries between the input space sub-domains. So-called boundary value analysis (BVA) and boundary value testing (BVT) techniques aim to exercise those boundaries and increase test effectiveness. However, the concepts of BVA and BVT themselves are not generally well defined, and it is not clear how to identify relevant sub-domains, and thus the boundaries delineating them, given a specification. This has limited adoption and hindered automation. We clarify BVA and BVT and introduce Boundary Value Exploration (BVE) to describe techniques that support them by helping to detect and identify boundary inputs. Additionally, we propose two concrete BVE techniques based on information-theoretic distance functions: (i) an algorithm for boundary detection and (ii) the usage of software visualization to explore the behavior of the software under test and identify its boundary behavior. As an initial evaluation, we apply these techniques on a much used and well-tested date handling library. Our results reveal questionable behavior at boundaries highlighted by our techniques. In conclusion, we argue that the boundary value exploration that our techniques enable is a step towards automated boundary value analysis and testing, fostering their wider use and improving test effectiveness and efficiency.
In the domain of software engineering, our efforts as researchers to advise industry on which software practices might be applied most effectively are limited by our lack of evidence based information about the relationships between context and pract ice efficacy. In order to accumulate such evidence, a model for context is required. We are in the exploratory stage of evolving a model for context for situated software practices. In this paper, we overview the evolution of our proposed model. Our analysis has exposed a lack of clarity in the meanings of terms reported in the literature. Our base model dimensions are People, Place, Product and Process. Our contributions are a deepening of our understanding of how to scope contextual factors when considering software initiatives and the proposal of an initial theoretical construct for context. Study limitations relate to a possible subjectivity in the analysis and a restricted evaluation base. In the next stage in the research, we will collaborate with academics and practitioners to formally refine the model.
In this work, we outline a cross-domain assurance process for safety-relevant software in embedded systems. This process aims to be applied in various different application domains and in conjunction with any development methodology. With this approa ch we plan to reduce the growing effort for safety assessment in embedded systems by reusing safety analysis techniques and tools for the product development in different domains.

In this paper, we present a software compilation approach for microprocessor/FPGA platforms that partitions a software binary onto custom hardware implemented in the FPGA. Our approach imposes less restrictions on software tool flow than previous com piler approaches, allowing software designers to use any software language and compiler. Our approach uses a back-end partitioning tool that utilizes decompilation techniques to recover important high-level information, resulting in performance comparable to high-level compiler-based approaches.
