We present an experimental study of the magnetic structure and dynamics of two frustrated hyperkagome compounds, Gd3Ga5O12 and Gd3Al5O12. It has previously been shown that Gd3Ga5O12 exhibits long-range correlations of multipolar directors, that are formed from antiferromagnetic spins on loops of ten ions. Using neutron diffraction and Reverse Monte Carlo simulations we prove the existence of similar magnetic correlations in Gd3Al5O12, showing the ubiquity of these complex structures in frustrated hyperkagome materials. Using inelastic neutron scattering we shed further light on the director state and the associated low lying magnetic excitations. In addition we have measured quasielastic dynamics that show evidence of spin diffusion. Finally, we present AC susceptibility measurements on both Gd3Ga5O12 and Gd3Al5O12, revealing a large difference in the low frequency dynamics between the two otherwise similar compounds.

We study frustrated spin-1/2 dimer systems in two dimensions with a bilayer structure, where spins are ferromagnetically coupled in dimers. Our model includes frustrated two-spin exchange interactions as well as four-spin interaction. We pay particul ar attention to the spin nematic phase, which does not exhibit any magnetic (spin-dipole) order but has a spin-quadrupolar long-range order. Employing a perturbation calculation, a mean-field approximation, and a numerical many-variable variational Monte Carlo method, we determine ground-state phase diagrams on various two-dimensional lattices. It is found that the model exhibits the spin nematic phase with ferro-quadrupolar order in a wide parameter region, in addition to conventional magnetically-ordered phases. In particular, it is shown that even when the four-spin interactions are absent, frustrated two-spin exchange interactions can realize the spin nematic phase as a result of strong interdimer correlations. It is also found that the phase transitions between the spin nematic phase and antiferromagnetic phases can be continuous. Furthermore, we present some exact arguments that various phases including the spin nematic phase and the vector chiral (p-type nematic) phase emerge from an SU(4) symmetric point in the model by the addition of appropriate perturbative interactions. The spin nematic phase generated from the SU(4) point is connected with the spin nematic phase found numerically in the system with only two-spin interactions.
Two geometrically frustrated pyrochlore stannates, undergoing long range magnetic order below 1K, were investigated at very low temperature. Anomalies in the behaviour of hyperfine quantities are found, by 155Gd Mossbauer spectroscopy in Gd2Sn2O7 and by low temperature specific heat measurements in Tb2Sn2O7. They are interpreted in terms of fluctuations of the correlated Gd or Tb spins, using a model two-level system (the nuclear spins) submitted to a randomly fluctuating (hyperfine) field.

We study a family of frustrated anti-ferromagnetic spin-$S$ systems with a fully dimerized ground state. This state can be exactly obtained without the need to include any additional three-body interaction in the model. The simplest members of the fa mily can be used as a building block to generate more complex geometries like spin tubes with a fully dimerized ground state. After present some numerical results about the phase diagram of these systems, we show that the ground state is robust against the inclusion of weak disorder in the couplings as well as several kinds of perturbations, allowing to study some other interesting models as a perturbative expansion of the exact one. A discussion on how to determine the dimerization region in terms of quantum information estimators is also presented. Finally, we explore the relation of these results with a the case of the a 4-leg spin tube which recently was proposed as the model for the description of the compound Cu$_2$Cl$_4$D$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$, delimiting the region of the parameter space where this model presents dimerization in its ground state.

Spin ices are exotic phases of matter characterized by frustrated spins obeying local ice rules, in analogy with the electric dipoles in water ice. In two dimensions, one can similarly define ice rules for in-plane Ising-like spins arranged on a kago me lattice. These ice rules require each triangle plaquette to have a single monopole, and can lead to various unique orders and excitations. Using experimental and theoretical approaches including magnetometry, thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we establish HoAgGe as a crystalline (i.e. non-artificial) system that realizes the kagome spin ice state. The system features a variety of partially and fully ordered states and a sequence of field-induced phases at low temperatures, all consistent with the kagome ice rule.
The recent discovery of Spin-ice is a spectacular example of non-coplanar spin arrangements that can arise in the pyrochlore A2B2O7 structure. We present magnetic and thermodynamic studies on the metallic-ferromagnet pyrochlore Sm2Mo2O7. Our studies, carried out on oriented crystals, suggest that the Sm spins have an ordered spin-ice ground state below about T* = 15 K. The temperature- and field-evolution of the ordered spin-ice state are governed by an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Sm and Mo spins. We propose that as a consequence of a robust feature of this coupling, the tetrahedra aligned with the external field adopt a 1-in, 3-out spin structure as opposed to 3-in, 1-out in dipolar spin ices, as the field exceeds a critical value.
