Several years ago, in the context of the physics of hysteresis in magnetic materials, a simple stochastic model has been introduced: the ABBM model. Later, the ABBM model has been advocated as a paradigm for a broad class of diverse phenomena, baptised crackling noise phenomena. The model reproduces many statistical features of such intermittent signals, as the statistics of burst (or avalanche) durations and sizes, with their power law exponents that would characterise the dynamics as critical. Beyond such critical exponents, the measure of the average shape of the avalanche has also been proposed. Here, the exact calculation of average and fluctuations of the avalanche shape for the ABBM model is presented, showing that its normalised shape is independent from the external drive. Moreover, average and fluctuations of the multi-avalanche shape, that is a sequence of avalanches of fixed total duration, is also computed. Surprisingly, the two quantities (avalanche and multi-avalanche normalised shapes) are identical. This result is obtained using the exact solution of the ABBM model, obtained leveraging the equivalence with the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process (CIR), through an exact time change. A presentation of this and other known exact results is provided: notably the correspondence of the ABBM/CIR model with the generalised Bessel process, describing the dynamics of the modulus of the multi dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. As a consequence, the correspondence between the excursion (avalanche) and bridge (multi-avalanche) shape distributions, turns to apply to all the aforementioned stochastic processes. In simple words: considering the distance from the origin of such diffusive particles, the (normalised) average shape (and fluctuations) of its trajectory until a return in a time T is the same, whether it has returned before T or not.

Levy flights are random walks in which the probability distribution of the step sizes is fat-tailed. Levy spatial diffusion has been observed for a collection of ultra-cold Rb atoms and single Mg+ ions in an optical lattice. Using the semiclassical t heory of Sisyphus cooling, we treat the problem as a coupled Levy walk, with correlations between the length and duration of the excursions. The problem is related to the area under Bessel excursions, overdamped Langevin motions that start and end at the origin, constrained to remain positive, in the presence of an external logarithmic potential. In the limit of a weak potential, the Airy distribution describing the areal distribution of the Brownian excursion is found. Three distinct phases of the dynamics are studied: normal diffusion, Levy diffusion and, below a certain critical depth of the optical potential, x~ t^{3/2} scaling. The focus of the paper is the analytical calculation of the joint probability density function from a newly developed theory of the area under the Bessel excursion. The latter describes the spatiotemporal correlations in the problem and is the microscopic input needed to characterize the spatial diffusion of the atomic cloud. A modified Montroll-Weiss (MW) equation for the density is obtained, which depends on the statistics of velocity excursions and meanders. The meander, a random walk in velocity space which starts at the origin and does not cross it, describes the last jump event in the sequence. In the anomalous phases, the statistics of meanders and excursions are essential for the calculation of the mean square displacement, showing that our correction to the MW equation is crucial, and points to the sensitivity of the transport on a single jump event. Our work provides relations between the statistics of velocity excursions and meanders and that of the diffusivity.
.Stochastic models based on random diffusivities, such as the diffusing-diffusivity approach, are popular concepts for the description of non-Gaussian diffusion in heterogeneous media. Studies of these models typically focus on the moments and the di splacement probability density function. Here we develop the complementary power spectral description for a broad class of random diffusivity processes. In our approach we cater for typical single particle tracking data in which a small number of trajectories with finite duration are garnered. Apart from the diffusing-diffusivity model we study a range of previously unconsidered random diffusivity processes, for which we obtain exact forms of the probability density function. These new processes are differe
We study a stochastic process $X_t$ related to the Bessel and the Rayleigh processes, with various applications in physics, chemistry, biology, economics, finance and other fields. The stochastic differential equation is $dX_t = (nD/X_t) dt + sqrt{2D } dW_t$, where $W_t$ is the Wiener process. Due to the singularity of the drift term for $X_t = 0$, different natures of boundary at the origin arise depending on the real parameter $n$: entrance, exit, and regular. For each of them we calculate analytically and numerically the probability density functions of first-passage times or first-exit times. Nontrivial behaviour is observed in the case of a regular boundary.
We discuss attacks and infections at propagating fronts of percolation processes based on the extended general epidemic process. The scaling behavior of the number of the attacked and infected sites in the long time limit at the ordinary and tricriti cal percolation transitions is governed by specific composite operators of the field-theoretic representation of this process. We calculate corresponding critical exponents for tricritical percolation in mean-field theory and for ordinary percolation to 1-loop order. Our results agree well with the available numerical data.
We introduce a class of 1D models mimicking a single-lane bridge with two junctions and two particle species driven in opposite directions. The model exhibits spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) for a range of injection/extraction rates. In this phas e the steady state currents of the two species are not equal. Moreover there is a co-existence region in which the symmetry broken phase co-exists with a symmetric phase. Along a path in which the extraction rate is varied, keeping the injection rate fixed and large, hysteresis takes place. The mean field phase diagram is calculated and supporting Monte-Carlo simulations are presented. One of the transition lines exhibits a kink, a feature which cannot exist in transition lines of equilibrium phase transitions.
