This is the first of three papers that present a detailed guide for working with the codes {sc tlusty} and {sc synspec} to generate model stellar atmospheres or accretion disks, and to produce detailed synthetic spectra. In this paper, we present a v ery brief manual intended for casual users who intend to use these codes for simple, well defined tasks. This paper does not present any background theory, or a description of the adopted numerical approaches, but instead uses simple examples to explain how to employ these codes. In particular, it shows how to produce a simple model atmosphere from the scratch, or how to improve an existing model by considering more extended model atoms. This paper also presents a brief guide to the spectrum synthesis program {sc synspec}.
This is the second part of a three-volume guide to TLUSTY and SYNSPEC. It presents a detailed reference manual for TLUSTY, which contains a detailed description of basic physical assumptions and equations used to model an atmosphere, together with an overview of the numerical methods to solve these equations.

This paper presents a detailed operational manual for TLUSTY. It provides a guide for understanding the essential features and the basic modes of operation of the program. To help the user, it is divided into two parts. The first part describes the m ost important input parameters and available numerical options. The second part covers additional details and a comprehensive description of all physical and numerical options, and a description of all input parameters, many of which needed only in special cases.

Using the latest generation of adaptive optics imaging systems together with laser guide stars on 8m-class telescopes, we are finally revealing the previously-hidden population of supernovae in starburst galaxies. Finding these supernovae and measuri ng the amount of absorption due to dust is crucial to being able to accurately trace the star formation history of our Universe. Our images of the host galaxies are amongst the sharpest ever obtained from the ground, and reveal much about how and why these galaxies are forming massive stars (that become supernovae) at such a prodigious rate.
We review the coronal visible and infrared lines, collecting previous observations, and comparing, whenever available, observed radiances with those predicted by various models: the quiet Sun, a moderately active Sun, and an active region as observed near the limb, around 1.1R$_{odot}$. We also model the off-limb radiances for the quiet Sun case. We used the most up-to-date atomic data in CHIANTI version 8. The comparison is satisfactory, in that all of the strong visible lines now have a firm identification. We revise several previous identifications and suggest some new ones. We also list the large number of observed lines for which we do not currently have atomic data, and therefore still await firm identifications. We also show that a significant number of coronal lines should be observable in the near-infrared region of the spectrum by the upcoming Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) and the AIR-Spec instrument, which observed the corona during the 2017 August 21 solar eclipse. We also briefly discuss the many potential spectroscopic diagnostics available to the visible and infrared, with particular emphasis on measurements of electron densities and chemical abundances. We briefly point out some of the potential diagnostics that could be available with the future infrared instrumentation that is being built for DKIST and planned for the Coronal Solar Magnetism Observatory (COSMO). Finally, we highlight the need for further improvements in the atomic data.
