Polycrystalline solids can exhibit material properties that differ significantly from those of equivalent single-crystal samples, in part, because of a spontaneous redistribution of mobile point defects into so-called space-charge regions adjacent to grain boundaries. The general analytical form of these space-charge regions is known only in the dilute limit, where defect-defect correlations can be neglected. Using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of a three-dimensional Coulomb lattice gas, we show that grain-boundary space-charge regions in non-dilute solid electrolytes exhibit overscreening -- damped oscillatory space-charge profiles -- and underscreening -- decay lengths that are longer than the corresponding Debye length and that increase with increasing defect-defect interaction strength. Overscreening and underscreening are known phenomena in concentrated liquid electrolytes, and the observation of functionally analogous behaviour in solid electrolyte space-charge regions suggests that the same underlying physics drives behaviour in both classes of systems. We therefore expect theoretical approaches developed to study non-dilute liquid electrolytes to be equally applicable to future studies of solid electrolytes.

While it is known that alloy components can segregate to grain boundaries (GBs), and that the atomic mobility in GBs greatly exceeds the atomic mobility in the lattice, little is known about the effect of GB segregation on GB diffusion. Atomistic com puter simulations offer a means of gaining insights into the segregation-diffusion relationship by computing the GB diffusion coefficients of the alloy components as a function of their segregated amounts. In such simulations, thermodynamically equilibrium GB segregation is prepared by a semi-grand canonical Monte Carlo method, followed by calculation of the diffusion coefficients of all alloy components by molecular dynamics. As a demonstration, the proposed methodology is applied to a GB is the Cu-Ag system. The GB diffusivities obtained exhibit non-trivial composition dependencies that can be explained by site blocking, site competition, and the onset of GB disordering due to the premelting effect.

Mg grain boundary (GB) segregation and GB diffusion can impact the processing and properties of Al-Mg alloys. Yet, Mg GB diffusion in Al has not been measured experimentally or predicted by simulations. We apply atomistic computer simulations to pred ict the amount and the free energy of Mg GB segregation, and the impact of segregation on GB diffusion of both alloy components. At low temperatures, Mg atoms segregated to a tilt GB form clusters with highly anisotropic shapes. Mg diffuses in Al GBs slower than Al itself, and both components diffuse slowly in comparison with Al GB self-diffusion. Thus, Mg segregation significantly reduces the rate of mass transport along GBs in Al-Mg alloys. The reduced atomic mobility can be responsible for the improved stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures.
A detailed theoretical and numerical investigation of the infinitesimal single-crystal gradient plasticity and grain-boundary theory of Gurtin (2008) A theory of grain boundaries that accounts automatically for grain misorientation and grain-boundary orientation. Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 56 (2), 640-662, is performed. The governing equations and flow laws are recast in variational form. The associated incremental problem is formulated in minimization form and provides the basis for the subsequent finite element formulation. Various choices of the kinematic measure used to characterize the ability of the grain boundary to impede the flow of dislocations are compared. An alternative measure is also suggested. A series of three-dimensional numerical examples serve to elucidate the theory.

We report a systematic measurement of the space charge effect observed in the few-ps laser pulse regime in laser-based solid-state photoemission spectroscopy experiments. The broadening and the shift of a gold Fermi edge as a function of spot size, l aser power, and emission angle are characterized for pulse lengths of 6 ps and 6 eV photon energy. The results are used as a benchmark for an $N$-body numerical simulation and are compared to different regimes used in photoemission spectroscopy. These results provide an important reference for the design of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy setups and next-generation light sources.
By means of Density Functional Theory calculations we evaluate several lithium carbonate - graphite interface models as a prototype of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase capping layer on graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries. It is found that only a n (a,b)-oriented Li2CO3 slab promotes tight binding with graphite. Such mutual organization of the components combines their structural features and reproduces coordination environment of ions, resulting in an adhesive energy of 116 meV/{AA}2 between graphite and lithium carbonate. This model also presents a high potential affinity with bulk. The corresponding charge distribution at such interface induces an electric potential gradient, such a gradient having been experimentally observed. We regard the mentioned criteria as the key descriptors of the interface stability and recommend them as the principal assessments for such interface study. In addition, we evaluate the impact of lithiated graphite on the stability of the model interface and study the generation of different point defects as mediators for Li interface transport. It is found that Li diffusion is mainly provided by interstitials. The induced potential gradient fundamentally assists the intercalation up to lithiation ratio of 70%.
