Revealing the predominant driving force behind symmetry breaking in correlated materials is sometimes a formidable task due to the intertwined nature of different degrees of freedom. This is the case for La2-xSrxNiO4+{delta} in which coupled incommensurate charge and spin stripes form at low temperatures. Here, we use resonant X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to study the temporal stability and domain memory of the charge and spin stripes in La2-xSrxNiO4+{delta}. Although spin stripes are more spatially correlated, charge stripes maintain a better temporal stability against temperature change. More intriguingly, charge order shows robust domain memory with thermal cycling up to 250 K, far above the ordering temperature. These results demonstrate the pinning of charge stripes to the lattice and that charge condensation is the predominant factor in the formation of stripe orders in nickelates.

We investigate the electron density distribution and the stability of stripe phases in the realistic two-band model with hopping elements between e_g orbitals at Ni sites on the square lattice, and compare these results with those obtained for the do ubly degenerate Hubbard model with two equivalent orbitals and diagonal hopping. For both models we determine the stability regions of filled and half-filled stripe phases for increasing hole doping x=2-n in the range of x<0.4, using Hartree-Fock approximation for large clusters. In the parameter range relevant to the nickelates, we obtain the most stable diagonal stripe structures with filling of nearly one hole per atom, as observed experimentally. In contrast, for the doubly degenerate Hubbard model the most stable stripes are somewhat reminiscent of the cuprates, with half-filled atoms at the domain wall sites. This difference elucidates the crucial role of the off-diagonal e_g hopping terms for the stripe formation in La_2-xSr_xNiO_4. The influence of crystal field is discussed as well.
We investigate the order parameter dynamics of the stripe-ordered nickelate, La$_{1.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$NiO$_4$, using time-resolved resonant X-ray diffraction. In spite of distinct spin and charge energy scales, the two order parameters amplitude dynamic s are found to be linked together due to strong coupling. Additionally, the vector nature of the spin sector introduces a longer re-orientation time scale which is absent in the charge sector. These findings demonstrate that the correlation linking the symmetry-broken states does not unbind during the non-equilibrium process, and the time scales are not necessarily associated with the characteristic energy scales of individual degrees of freedom.
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in doped NdNiO$_2$, we study the magnetic exchange interaction $J$ in layered $d^9$ nickelates from first principles. The mother compounds of the high-$T_{rm c}$ cuprates belong to the charge-tra nsfer regime in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen diagram and have $J$ larger than 100 meV. While this feature makes the cuprates very different from other transition metal oxides, it is of great interest whether layered $d^9$ nickelates can also have such a large $J$. However, one complexity is that NdNiO$_2$ is not a Mott insulator due to carrier doping from the block layer. To compare the cuprates and $d^9$ nickelates on an equal basis, we study RbCa$_2$NiO$_3$ and $A_{2}$NiO$_{2}$Br$_2$ ($A$: a cation with the valence of $2.5+$), which were recently designed theoretically by block-layer engineering. These nickelates are free from the self-doping effect and belong to the Mott-Hubbard regime. We show that these nickelates share a common thread with the high-$T_{rm c}$ cuprates in that they also have a significant exchange interaction $J$ as large as about 100 meV.
Modulations in manganites attributed to stripes of charge/orbital/spin order are thought to result from strong electron-lattice interactions that lock the superlattice and parent lattice periodicities. Surprisingly in La1-xCaxMnO3(x>0.5, 90 K), conve rgent beam (3.6 nm spot) electron diffraction patterns rule out charge stacking faults and indicate a superlattice with uniform periodicity. Moreover, large area electron diffraction peaks are sharper than simulations with stacking faults. Since the electron-lattice coupling does not lock the two periodicities (to yield stripes) it may be too weak to strongly localise charge.
The magnetic excitations of charge-stripe ordered La2NiO4.11 where investigated using polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering to determine the magnetic excitations of the charge stripe electrons. We observed a magnetic excitation mode consisten t with the gapped quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlations of the charge stripe electrons previously observed in La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 1/3 and x = 0.275.
