Spin-orbit-coupled Mott iridates show great similarity with parent compounds of superconducting cuprates, attracting extensive research interests especially for their electron-doped states. However, previous experiments are largely limited within a small doping range due to the absence of effective dopants, and therefore the electron-doped phase diagram remains elusive. Here we utilize an ionic-liquid-gating induced protonation method to achieve electron-doping into a 5d Mott-insulator built with SrIrO3/SrTiO3 superlattice, and achieve a systematic mapping of its electron-doped phase diagram with the evolution of the iridium valence state from 4+ to 3+, equivalent to doping of one electron per iridium ion. Along increasing doping level, the parent Mott-insulator is first turned into a localized metallic state with gradually suppressed magnetic ordering, and then further evolved into a nonmagnetic band insulating state. This work forms an important step forward for the study of electron-doped Mott iridate systems, and the strategy of manipulating the band filling in an artificially designed superlattice structure can be readily extended into other systems with more exotic states to explore.

Fifteen years since its inception, the Kitaev model still boasts only a narrow group of material realizations. We review the progress in studying and understanding one of them, lithium iridate Li$_2$IrO$_3$ available in three polymorphs that host str ong Kitaev interactions on spin lattices of different dimensionality and topology. We also discuss feasibility, effectiveness, and repercussions of tuning strategies based on the application of external pressure and chemical substitutions.
Hyperhoneycomb iridate $beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is a three-dimensional analogue of two-dimensional honeycomb iridates, such as $alpha$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, which recently appeared as another playground for the physics of Kitaev-type spin liquid. $beta$-Li$_2$I rO$_3$ shows a non-collinear spiral ordering of spin-orbital-entangled $J_{rm eff}$ = 1/2 moments at low temperature, which is known to be suppressed under a pressure of $sim$2 GPa. With further increase of pressure, a structural transition is observed at $P_{rm S}$ $sim$ 4 GPa at room temperature. Using the neutron powder diffraction technique, the crystal structure in the high-pressure phase of $beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ above $P_{rm S}$ was refined, which indicates the formation of Ir$_2$ dimers on the zig-zag chains, with the Ir-Ir distance even shorter than that of metallic Ir. We argue that the strong dimerization stabilizes the bonding molecular orbital state comprising the two local $d_{zx}$-orbitals on the Ir-O$_2$-Ir bond plane, which conflicts with the equal superposition of $d_{xy}$-, $d_{yz}$- and $d_{zx}$- orbitals in the $J_{rm eff}$ = 1/2 wave function produced by strong spin-orbit coupling. The results of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements and the electronic structure calculations are fully consistent with the collapse of the $J_{rm eff}$ = 1/2 state. A subtle competition of various electronic phases is universal in honeycomb-based Kitaev materials.
We investigate the quasiperiodic crystal (LaS)1.196(VS2) by angle and time resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The dispersion of electronic states is in qualitative agreement with band structure calculated for the VS2 slab without the incommensurate distortion. Nonetheless, the spectra display a temperature dependent pseudogap instead of quasiparticles crossing. The sudden photoexcitation at 50 K induces a partial filling of the electronic pseudogap within less than 80 fs. The electronic energy flows into the lattice modes on a comparable timescale. We attribute this surprisingly short timescale to a very strong electron-phonon coupling to the incommensurate distortion. This result sheds light on the electronic localization arising in aperiodic structures and quasicrystals.

We have investigated the pressure-induced spin-state transition in Co$^{2+}$ systems in terms of a competition between the Hunds exchange energy ($J$) and the crystal-field splitting ($Delta_{CF}$). First, we show the universal metastability of the l ow-spin state in octahedrally coordinated Co$^{2+}$ systems. Then we present the strategy to search for a Co$^{2+}$ system, for which the mechanism of spin-state and metal-insulator transitions is governed not by the Mott physics but by $J$ vs. $Delta_{CF}$ physics. Using CoCl$_{2}$ as a prototypical Co$^{2+}$ system, we have demonstrated the pressure-induced spin-state transition from high-spin to low-spin, which is accompanied with insulator-to-metal and antiferromagnetic to half-metallic ferromagnetic transitions. Combined with metastable character of Co$^{2+}$ and the high compressibility nature of CoCl$_{2}$, the transition pressure as low as 27 GPa can be identified on the basis of $J$ vs. $Delta_{CF}$ physics.
The crystal structure of layered metal IrTe2 is determined using single-crystal x-ray diffraction. At T=220 K, it exhibits Ir and Te dimers forming a valence-bond crystal. Electronic structure calculations reveal an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional e lectronic state, with planes of reduced density of states cutting diagonally through the Ir and Te layers. These planes are formed by the Ir and Te dimers, which exhibit a signature of covalent bonding character development. Evidence for significant charge disproportionation among the dimerized and non-dimerized Ir (charge order) is also presented.
