Spin backflow and spin-memory loss have been well established to considerably lower the interfacial spin transmissivity of metallic magnetic interfaces and thus the energy efficiency of spin-orbit torque technologies. Here we report that spin backflow and spin-memory loss at Pt-based heavy metal/ferromagnet interfaces can be effectively eliminated by inserting an insulating paramagnetic NiO layer of optimum thickness. The latter enables the thermal magnon-mediated essentially unity spin-current transmission at room temperature due to considerably enhanced effective spin-mixing conductance of the interface. As a result, we obtain dampinglike spin-orbit torque efficiency per unit current density of up to 0.8 as detected by the standard technology ferromagnet FeCoB and others, which reaches the expected upper-limit spin Hall ratio of Pt. We establish that Pt/NiO and Pt-Hf/NiO are two energy-efficient, integration-friendly, and high-endurance spin-current generators that provide >100 times greater energy efficiency than sputter-deposited topological insulators BiSb and BiSe. Our finding will benefit spin-orbitronic research and advance spin-torque technologies.

We propose a frequency selective light trapping scheme that enables the creation of more visually-transparent and yet simultaneously more efficient semitransparent solar cells. A nanoparticle scattering layer and photonic stack back reflector create a selective trapping effect by total internal reflection within a medium, increasing absorption of IR light. We propose a strong frequency selective scattering layer using spherical TiO2 nanoparticles with radius of 255 nm and area density of 1.1% in a medium with index of refraction of 1.5. Using detailed numerical simulations for this configuration, we find that it is possible to create a semitransparent silicon solar cell that has a Shockley Queisser efficiency of 12.0%pm0.4% with a visible transparency of 60.2%pm1.3%, 13.3%pm1.3 more visibly-transparent than a bare silicon cell at the same efficiency.
In this work, we study magnetization switching induced by spin-orbit torque in W(Pt)/Co/NiO heterostructures with variable thickness of heavy-metal layers W and Pt, perpendicularly magnetized Co layer and an antiferromagnetic NiO layer. Using current -driven switching, magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall effect measurements, perpendicular and in-plane exchange bias field were determined. Several Hall-bar devices possessing in-plane exchange bias from both systems were selected and analyzed in relation to our analytical switching model of critical current density as a function of Pt and W thickness, resulting in estimation of effective spin Hall angle and perpendicular effective magnetic anisotropy. We demonstrate in both the Pt/Co/NiO and the W/Co/NiO systems the deterministic Co magnetization switching without external magnetic field which was replaced by in-plane exchange bias field. Moreover, we show that due to a higher effective spin Hall angle in W than in Pt-systems the relative difference between the resistance states in the magnetization current switching to difference between the resistance states in magnetic field switching determined by anomalous Hall effect ($Delta R/Delta R_{text{AHE}}$) is about twice higher in W than Pt, while critical switching current density in W is one order lower than in Pt-devices. The current switching stability and training process is discussed in detail.
Incorporating multifunctionality along with the spin-related phenomenon in a single device is of great interest for the development of next generation spintronic devices. One of these challenges is to couple the photo-response of the device together with its magneto-response to exploit the multifunctional operation at room temperature. Here, the multifunctional operation of a single layer p-type molecular spin valve is presented, where the device shows a photovoltaic effect at the room temperature on a transparent glass substrate. The generated photovoltage is almost three times larger than the applied bias to the device which facilitates the modulation of the magnetic response of the device both with bias and light. It is observed that the photovoltage modulation with light and magnetic field is linear with the light intensity. The device shows an increase in power conversion efficiency under magnetic field, an ability to invert the current with magnetic field and under certain conditions it can act as a spin-photodetector with zero power consumption in the standby mode. The room temperature exploitation of the interplay among light, bias and magnetic field in the single device with a p-type molecule opens a way towards more complex and efficient operation of a complete spin-photovoltaic cell.

Interface constitutes a significant volume fraction in nanocomposites, and it requires the ability to tune and tailor interfaces to tap the full potential of nanocomposites. However, the development and optimization of nanocomposites is currently res tricted by the limited exploration and utilization of interfaces at different length scales. In this research, we have designed and introduced a relatively large-scale vertical interphase into carbon nanocomposites, in which the dielectric response and dispersion features in microwave frequency range are successfully adjusted. A remarkable relaxation process has been observed in vertical-interphase nanocomposites, showing sensitivity to both filler loading and the discrepancy in polarization ability across the interphase. Together with our analyses on dielectric spectra and relaxation processes, it is suggested that the intrinsic effect of vertical interphase lies in its ability to constrain and localize heterogeneous charges under external fields. Following this logic, systematic research is presented in this article affording to realize tunable frequency-dependent dielectric functionality by means of vertical interphase engineering. Overall, this study provides a novel method to utilize interfacial effects rationally. The research approach demonstrated here has great potential in developing microwave dielectric nanocomposites and devices with targeted or unique performance such as tunable broadband absorbers.
There is a growing interest in utilizing the distinctive material properties of organic semiconductors for spintronic applications. Here, we explore injection of pure spin current from Permalloy into a small molecule system based on dinaphtho[2,3-b:2 ,3-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT) at ferromagnetic resonance. The unique tunability of organic materials by molecular design allows us to study the impact of interfacial properties on the spin injection efficiency systematically. We show that both, spin injection efficiency at the interface as well as the spin diffusion length can be tuned sensitively by the interfacial molecular structure and side chain substitution of the molecule.
