MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ (MBT) materials are promising antiferromagnetic topological insulators where field driven ferromagnetism is predicted to cause a transition between axion insulator and Weyl semimetallic states. However, the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn/Bi antisite defects and the main Mn layer can reduce the low-field magnetization, and it has been shown that such defects are more prevalent in the structurally identical trivial magnetic insulator MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ (MST). We use high-field magnetization measurements to show that the magnetization of MBT and MST occur in stages and full saturation requires fields of~$sim$~60 Tesla. As a consequence, the low-field magnetization plateau state in MBT, where many determinations of quantum anomalous Hall state are studied, actually consists of ferrimagnetic septuple blocks containing both a uniform and staggered magnetization component.

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we visualized the native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator $mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Two native defects $mathrm{Mn_{Bi}}$ and $mathrm{Bi_{Te}}$ antisites can be well resolved in the t opographic images. $mathrm{Mn_{Bi}}$ tend to suppress the density of states at conduction band edge. Spectroscopy imaging reveals a localized peak-like local density of state at $sim80$~meV below the Fermi energy. A careful inspection of topographic and spectroscopic images, combined with density functional theory calculation, suggests this results from $mathrm{Bi_{Mn}}$ antisites at Mn sites. The random distribution of $mathrm{Mn_{Bi}}$ and $mathrm{Bi_{Mn}}$ antisites results in spatial fluctuation of local density of states near the Fermi level in $mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$.
Combinations of non-trivial band topology and long-range magnetic order hold promise for realizations of novel spintronic phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the topological magnetoelectric effect. Following theoretical advances material candidates are emerging. Yet, a compound with a band-inverted electronic structure and an intrinsic net magnetization remains unrealized. MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is a candidate for the first antiferromagnetic topological insulator and the progenitor of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series. For $n$ = 1, we confirm a non-stoichiometric composition proximate to MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and establish an antiferromagnetic state below 13 K followed by a state with net magnetization and ferromagnetic-like hysteresis below 5 K. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments and density-functional calculations reveal a topological surface state on the MnBi$_4$Te$_7$(0001) surface, analogous to the non-magnetic parent compound Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Our results render MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ as a band-inverted material with an intrinsic net magnetization and a complex magnetic phase diagram providing a versatile platform for the realization of different topological phases.
Quantum states of matter combining non-trivial topology and magnetism attract a lot of attention nowadays; the special focus is on magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) featuring quantum anomalous Hall and axion insulator phases. Feasibility of many novel phenomena that emph{intrinsic} magnetic TIs may host depends crucially on our ability to engineer and efficiently tune their electronic and magnetic structures. Here, using angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy along with emph{ab initio} calculations we report on a large family of intrinsic magnetic TIs in the homologous series of the van der Waals compounds (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ with $m=0, ..., 6$. Magnetic, electronic and, consequently, topological properties of these materials depend strongly on the $m$ value and are thus highly tunable. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the neighboring Mn layers strongly weakens on moving from MnBi2Te4 (m=0) to MnBi4Te7 (m=1), changes to ferromagnetic (FM) one in MnBi6Te10 (m=2) and disappears with further increase in m. In this way, the AFM and FM TI states are respectively realized in the $m=0,1$ and $m=2$ cases, while for $m ge 3$ a novel and hitherto-unknown topologically-nontrivial phase arises, in which below the corresponding critical temperature the magnetizations of the non-interacting 2D ferromagnets, formed by the MBT, building blocks, are disordered along the third direction. The variety of intrinsic magnetic TI phases in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ allows efficient engineering of functional van der Waals heterostructures for topological quantum computation, as well as antiferromagnetic and 2D spintronics.
Quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has been experimentally realized in magnetically-doped topological insulators or intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ by applying an external magnetic field. However, either the low observation temperature or the unexpected external magnetic field (tuning all MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ layers to be ferromagnetic) still hinders further application of QAHE. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that proper stacking of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$ layers is able to produce intrinsically ferromagnetic van der Waals heterostructures to realize the high-temperature QAHE. We find that interlayer ferromagnetic transition can happen at $T_{rm C}=42~rm K$ when a five-quintuple-layer Sb$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator is inserted into two septuple-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ with interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling. Band structure and topological property calculations show that MnBi$_2$Te$_4$/Sb$_2$Te$_3$/MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ heterostructure exhibits a topologically nontrivial band gap around 26 meV, that hosts a QAHE with a Chern number of $mathcal{C}=1$. In addition, our proposed materials system should be considered as an ideal platform to explore high-temperature QAHE due to the fact of natural charge-compensation, originating from the intrinsic n-type defects in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and p-type defects in Sb$_2$Te$_3$.

Surface magnetism and its correlation with the electronic structure are critical to understand the gapless topological surface state in the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Here, using static and time resolved angle-resolved p hotoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we find a significant ARPES intensity change together with a gap opening on a Rashba-like conduction band. Comparison with a model simulation strongly indicates that the surface magnetism on cleaved MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is the same as its bulk state. The coexistence of surface ferromagnetism and a gapless TSS uncovers the novel complexity of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ that may be responsible for the low quantum anomalous Hall temperature of exfoliated MnBi$_2$Te$_4$.
