The origin and nature of the cosmic rays is still uncertain. However, a big progress has been achieved in recent years due to the good quality data provided by current and recent cosmic-rays observatories. The cosmic ray flux decreases very fast with energy in such a way that for energies $gtrsim 10^{15}$ eV, the study of these very energetic particles is performed by using ground based detectors. These detectors are able to detect the atmospheric air showers generated by the cosmic rays as a consequence of their interactions with the molecules of the Earths atmosphere. One of the most important observables that can help to understand the origin of the cosmic rays is the composition profile as a function of primary energy. Since the primary particle cannot be observed directly, its chemical composition has to be inferred from parameters of the showers that are very sensitive to the primary mass. The two parameters more sensitive to the composition of the primary are the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum and the muon content of the showers. Past and current cosmic-rays observatories have been using muon counters with the main purpose of measuring the muon content of the showers. Motivated by this fact, in this work we study in detail the estimation of the number of muons that hit a muon counter, which is limited by the number of segments of the counters and by the pile-up effect. We consider as study cases muon counters with segmentation corresponding to the underground muon detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory that are currently taking data, and the one corresponding to the muon counters of the AGASA Observatory, which stopped taking data in 2004.

The number of muons in extensive air showers predicted using LHC-tuned hadronic interaction models, such as EPOS-LHC and QGSJetII-04, is smaller than observed in showers recorded by leading cosmic ray experiments. In this paper, we present a new meth od to derive muon rescaling factors by analyzing reconstructions of simulated showers. The z-variable used (difference of initially simulated and reconstructed total signal in detectors) is connected to the muon signal and is roughly independent of the zenith angle but depends on the mass of primary cosmic ray. The performance of the method is tested using Monte Carlo shower simulations for the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Having an individual z-value from each simulated hybrid event, the corresponding signal at 1000 m from the shower axis, and using a parametrization of the muon fraction in simulated showers, we can calculate the multiplicative rescaling parameters of the muon signals in the ground detector even for an individual event. We can also study its dependence as a function of zenith angle and the mass of primary cosmic ray. This gives a possibility not only to test/calibrate the hadronic interaction models, but also to derive the $beta$-exponent, describing an increase of the number of muons as a function of primary energy and mass of the cosmic ray. Detailed simulations show dependence of the $beta$-exponent on hadronic interaction properties, thus the determination of this parameter is important for understanding the muon deficit problem.

In the present work we carry out a study of the high energy cosmic rays mass identification capabilities of a hybrid detector employing both fluorescence telescopes and particle detectors at ground using simulated data. It involves the analysis of ex tensive showers with zenith angles above 60 degrees making use of the joint distribution of the depth of maximum and muon size at ground level as mass discriminating parameters. The correlation and sensitivity to the primary mass are investigated. Two different techniques - clustering algorithms and neural networks - are adopted to classify the mass identity on an event-by-event basis. Typical results for the achieved performance of identification are reported and discussed. The analysis can be extended in a very straightforward way to vertical showers or can be complemented with additional discriminating observables coming from different types of detectors.
Results of investigations of the near-horizontal muons in the range of zenith angles of 85-95 degrees are presented. In this range, so-called albedo muons (atmospheric muons scattered in the ground into the upper hemisphere) are detected. Albedo muon s are one of the main sources of the background in neutrino experiments. Experimental data of two series of measurements conducted at the experimental complex NEVOD-DECOR with the duration of about 30 thousand hours live time are analyzed. The results of measurements of the muon flux intensity are compared with simulation results using Monte-Carlo on the basis of two multiple Coulomb scattering models: model of point-like nuclei and model taking into account finite size of nuclei.
The ANTARES high energy neutrino telescope is a three-dimensional array of about 900 photomultipliers distributed over 12 mooring lines installed in the Mediterranean Sea. Between February and November 2007 it acquired data in a 5-line configuration. The zenith angular distribution of the atmospheric muon flux and the associated depth-intensity relation are measured and compared with previous measurements and Monte Carlo expectations. An evaluation of the systematic effects due to uncertainties on environmental and detector parameters is presented.
Baikal-GVD is a km$^3$-scale neutrino telescope being constructed in Lake Baikal. Muon and partially tau (anti)neutrino interactions near the detector through the W$^{pm}$-boson exchange are accompanied by muon tracks. Reconstructed direction of the track is arguably the most precise probe of the neutrino direction attainable in Cerenkov neutrino telescopes. Muon reconstruction techniques adopted by Baikal-GVD are discussed in the present report. Performance of the muon reconstruction is studied using realistic Monte Carlo simulation of the detector. The algorithms are applied to real data from Baikal-GVD and the results are compared with simulations. The performance of the neutrino selection based on a boosted decision tree classifier is discussed.
