How superconductivity interacts with charge or nematic order is one of the great unresolved issues at the center of research in quantum materials. Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$Ni$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (BSNA) is a charge ordered pnictide superconductor recently shown to exhibit a six-fold enhancement of superconductivity due to nematic fluctuations near a quantum phase transition (at $x_c=0.7$). The superconductivity is, however, anomalous, with the resistive transition for $0.4 < x< x_c$ occurring at a higher temperature than the specific heat anomaly. Using x-ray scattering, we discovered a new charge density wave (CDW) in BSNA in this composition range. The CDW is commensurate with a period of two lattice parameters, and is distinct from the two CDWs previously reported in this material. We argue that the anomalous transport behavior arises from heterogeneous superconductivity nucleating at antiphase domain walls in this CDW. We also present new data on the incommensurate CDW, previously identified as being unidirectional, showing that is a rotationally symmetric, 4$Q$ state with $C_4$ symmetry. Our study establishes BSNA as a rare material containing three distinct CDWs, and an exciting testbed for studying coupling between CDW, nematic, and SC orders.

Heavily doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x$=0.19 and 0.26) single crystals were successfully grown, and investigated by the measurements of resistivity and anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic insulating ground state of the undoped BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$, the K-doped crystals show metallic conduction with weak ferromagnetism below $sim$50 K and Curie-Weiss-like in-plane magnetic susceptibility above $sim$50 K. Under high pressures up to 6 GPa, the low-temperature metallicity changes into a state characterized by a Kondo-like resistivity minimum without any signature of superconductivity above 2.5 K. Electronic structure calculations for $x$=0.25 using $2times2times1$ supercell reproduce the hole-doped metallic state. The density of states at Fermi energy have significant As 4$p$ components, suggesting that the 4$p$ holes are mainly responsible for the metallic conduction. Our results suggest that the interplay between itinerant 4$p$ holes and local 3$d$ moments is mostly responsible for the novel metallic state.
Ba(Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ is a structural homologue of the pnictide high temperature superconductor, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, in which the Fe atoms are replaced by Ni. Superconductivity is highly suppressed in this system, reaching a maxi mum $T_c$ = 2.3 K, compared to 24 K in its iron-based cousin, and the origin of this $T_c$ suppression is not known. Using x-ray scattering, we show that Ba(Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ exhibits a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) at its triclinic phase transition. The CDW is incommensurate, exhibits a sizable lattice distortion, and is accompanied by the appearance of $alpha$ Fermi surface pockets in photoemission [B. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 035110 (2011)], suggesting it forms by an unconventional mechanism. Co doping suppresses the CDW, paralleling the behavior of antiferromagnetism in iron-based superconductors. Our study demonstrates that pnictide superconductors can exhibit competing CDW order, which may be the origin of $T_c$ suppression in this system.

We report a comprehensive x-ray scattering study of charge density wave (stripe) ordering in $rm La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (x approx 1/8)$, for which the superconducting $T_c$ is greatly suppressed. Strong superlattice reflections corresponding to static ord ering of charge stripes were observed in this sample. The structural modulation at the lowest temperature was deduced based on the intensity of over 70 unique superlattice positions surveyed. We found that the charge order in this sample is described with one-dimensional charge density waves, which have incommensurate wave-vectors (0.23, 0, 0.5) and (0, 0.23, 0.5) respectively on neighboring $rm CuO_2$ planes. The structural modulation due to the charge density wave order is simply sinusoidal, and no higher harmonics were observed. Just below the structural transition temperature, short-range charge density wave correlation appears, which develops into a large scale charge ordering around 40 K, close to the spin density wave ordering temperature. However, this charge ordering fails to grow into a true long range order, and its correlation length saturates at $sim 230AA$, and slightly decreases below about 15 K, which may be due to the onset of two-dimensional superconductivity.
We investigate the optical properties of the normal state of the infinite-layer La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ using DFT+DMFT. We find a correlated metal which exhibits substantial transfer of spectral weight to high energies relative to the density functio nal theory. The correlations are not due to Mott physics, which would suppress the charge fluctuations and integrated optical spectral weight as we approach a putative insulating state. Instead we find the unusual situation, that the integrated optical spectral weight {it decreases} with doping and {it increases } with increasing temperature. We contrast this with the coherent component of the optical conductivity, which {it decreases} with increasing temperature as a result of a coherence$-$incoherence crossover. Our optical studies support a picture of a Hunds metallic state, where dynamical orbital fluctuations are visible at intermediate energies, even if at low energies the Fermi surface has primarily $d_{x^2 - y^2}$ character and we propose a low-energy two-band model with atom centered $e_g$ states.
We report the experimental details of how mechanical detwinning can be implemented in tandem with high sensitivity nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and use this setup to measure the in-plane anisotropy of the spin-lattice relaxation rate in un derdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.048$. The anisotropy reaches a maximum of 30% at $T_{N}$, and the recovery data reveal that the glassy behavior of the spin fluctuations present in the twinned state persist in the fully detwinned crystal. A theoretical model is presented to describe the spin-lattice relaxation rate in terms of anisotropic nematic spin fluctuations.
