The earliest atmospheres of rocky planets originate from extensive volatile release during magma ocean epochs that occur during assembly of the planet. These establish the initial distribution of the major volatile elements between different chemical reservoirs that subsequently evolve via geological cycles. Current theoretical techniques are limited in exploring the anticipated range of compositional and thermal scenarios of early planetary evolution, even though these are of prime importance to aid astronomical inferences on the environmental context and geological history of extrasolar planets. Here, we present a coupled numerical framework that links an evolutionary, vertically-resolved model of the planetary silicate mantle with a radiative-convective model of the atmosphere. Using this method we investigate the early evolution of idealized Earth-sized rocky planets with end-member, clear-sky atmospheres dominated by either H$_2$, H$_2$O, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, CO, O$_2$, or N$_2$. We find central metrics of early planetary evolution, such as energy gradient, sequence of mantle solidification, surface pressure, or vertical stratification of the atmosphere, to be intimately controlled by the dominant volatile and outgassing history of the planet. Thermal sequences fall into three general classes with increasing cooling timescale: CO, N$_2$, and O$_2$ with minimal effect, H$_2$O, CO$_2$, and CH$_4$ with intermediate influence, and H$_2$ with several orders of magnitude increase in solidification time and atmosphere vertical stratification. Our numerical experiments exemplify the capabilities of the presented modeling framework and link the interior and atmospheric evolution of rocky exoplanets with multi-wavelength astronomical observations.

Infrared observations of the coma of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko were carried out from July to September 2015, i.e., around perihelion (13 August 2015), with the high-resolution channel of the VIRTIS instrument onboard Rosetta. We present the analysis of fluorescence emission lines of H$_2$O, CO$_2$, $^{13}$CO$_2$, OCS, and CH$_4$ detected in limb sounding with the field of view at 2.7-5 km from the comet centre. Measurements are sampling outgassing from the illuminated southern hemisphere, as revealed by H$_2$O and CO$_2$ raster maps, which show anisotropic distributions, aligned along the projected rotation axis. An abrupt increase of water production is observed six days after perihelion. In the mean time, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, and OCS abundances relative to water increased by a factor of 2 to reach mean values of 32%, 0.47%, and 0.18%, respectively, averaging post-perihelion data. We interpret these changes as resulting from the erosion of volatile-poor surface layers. Sustained dust ablation due to the sublimation of water ice maintained volatile-rich layers near the surface until at least the end of the considered period, as expected for low thermal inertia surface layers. The large abundance measured for CO$_2$ should be representative of the 67P nucleus original composition, and indicates that 67P is a CO$_2$-rich comet. Comparison with abundance ratios measured in the northern hemisphere shows that seasons play an important role in comet outgassing. The low CO$_2$/H$_2$O values measured above the illuminated northern hemisphere are not original, but the result of the devolatilization of the uppermost layers.
The ionization probability of N$_2$, O$_2$, and CO$_2$ in intense laser fields is studied theoretically as a function of the alignment angle by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation numerically assuming only the single-active-electron appro ximation. The results are compared to recent experimental data [D.~Pavi{v{c}}i{c} et al., Phys.,Rev.,Lett. {bf 98}, 243001 (2007)] and good agreement is found for N$_2$ and O$_2$. For CO$_2$ a possible explanation is provided for the failure of simplified single-active-electron models to reproduce the experimentally observed narrow ionization distribution. It is based on a field-induced coherent core-trapping effect.
We report the crystal growth and structural and magnetic properties of quasi two-dimensional $S=1/2$ quantum magnet Cu[C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$][H$_3$N-(CH$_2$)$_2$-NH$_3$]$cdot$3H$_2$O. It is found to crystallize in a monoclinic structure with space grou p $C2/m$. The CuO$_4$ plaquettes are connected into a two-dimensional framework in the $ab$-plane through the anions of [C$_6$H$_2$(COO)$_4$]$^{4-}$ (pyromellitic acid). The [H$_3$N-(CH$_2$)$_2$-NH$_3$]$^{2+}$$cdot$3H$_2$O groups are located between the layers and provide a weak interlayer connection via hydrogen (H...O) bonds. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility is well described by $S=1/2$ frustrated square lattice ($J_1-J_2$) model with nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1/k_{rm B} simeq 5.35$ K and next-nearest-neighbor interaction $J_2/k_{rm B} simeq -0.01$ K. Even, our analysis using frustrated rectangular lattice ($J_{1a,b}-J_2$) model confirms almost isotropic nearest-neighbour interactions ($J_{rm 1a}/k_{rm B} simeq 5.31$ K and $J_{rm 1b}/k_{rm B} simeq 5.38$ K) in the $ab$-plane and $J_2/k_{rm B}simeq-0.24$ K. Further, the isothermal magnetization at $T=1.9$ K is also well described by a non-frustrated square lattice model with $J_1/k_{rm B} simeq 5.2$ K. Based on the $J_2/J_1$ ratio, the compound can be placed in the N{e}el antiferromagnetic state of the $J_1 - J_2$ phase diagram. No signature of magnetic long-range-order was detected down to 2 K.
Context: Herschel observations suggest that the H$_2$O distribution in outflows from low-mass stars resembles the H$_2$ emission. It is still unclear which of the different excitation components that characterise the mid- and near-IR H$_2$ distributi on is associated with H$_2$O. Aim: The aim is to spectrally resolve the different excitation components observed in the H$_2$ emission. This will allow us to identify the H$_2$ counterpart associated with H$_2$O and finally derive directly an H$_2$O abundance estimate with respect to H$_2$. Methods: We present new high spectral resolution observations of H$_2$ 0-0 S(4), 0-0 S(9), and 1-0 S(1) towards HH 54, a bright nearby shock region in the southern sky. In addition, new Herschel-HIFI H$_2$O (2$_{12}$$-$1$_{01}$) observations at 1670~GHz are presented. Results: Our observations show for the first time a clear separation in velocity of the different H$_2$ lines: the 0-0 S(4) line at the lowest excitation peaks at $-$7~km~s$^{-1}$, while the more excited 0-0 S(9) and 1-0 S(1) lines peak at $-$15~km~s$^{-1}$. H$_2$O and high-$J$ CO appear to be associated with the H$_2$ 0-0 S(4) emission, which traces a gas component with a temperature of 700$-$1000 K. The H$_2$O abundance with respect to H$_2$ 0-0 S(4) is estimated to be $X$(H$_2$O)$<$1.4$times$10$^{-5}$ in the shocked gas over an area of 13$^{primeprime}$. Conclusions: We resolve two distinct gas components associated with the HH 54 shock region at different velocities and excitations. This allows us to constrain the temperature of the H$_2$O emitting gas ($leq$1000 K) and to derive correct estimates of H$_2$O abundance in the shocked gas, which is lower than what is expected from shock model predictions.
Snowlines of major volatiles regulate the gas and solid C/N/O ratios in the planet-forming midplanes of protoplanetary disks. Snow surfaces are the 2D extensions of snowlines in the outer disk regions, where radiative heating results in a decreasing temperature with disk height. CO and N$_2$ are two of the most abundant carriers of C, N and O. N$_2$H$^+$ can be used to probe the snow surfaces of both molecules, because it is destroyed by CO and formed from N$_2$. Here we present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of N$_2$H$^+$ at 0.2$$-0.4$$ resolution in the disks around LkCa 15, GM Aur, DM Tau, V4046 Sgr, AS 209, and IM Lup. We find two distinctive emission morphologies: N$_2$H$^+$ is either present in a bright, narrow ring surrounded by extended tenuous emission, or in a broad ring. These emission patterns can be explained by two different kinds of vertical temperature structures. Bright, narrow N$_2$H$^+$ rings are expected in disks with a thick Vertically Isothermal Region above the Midplane (VIRaM) layer (LkCa 15, GM Aur, DM Tau) where the N$_2$H$^+$ emission peaks between the CO and N$_2$ snowlines. Broad N$_2$H$^+$ rings come from disks with a thin VIRaM layer (V4046 Sgr, AS 209, IM Lup). We use a simple model to extract the first sets of CO and N$_2$ snowline pairs and corresponding freeze-out temperatures towards the disks with a thick VIRaM layer. The results reveal a range of N$_2$ and CO snowline radii towards stars of similar spectral type, demonstrating the need for empirically determined snowlines in disks.
