Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) focal plane array (FPA) with optical readout offers exciting opportunities for real-time terahertz (THz) imaging. However, conventional FPA suffers from a low THz absorption ratio, which further decreases the performance of THz imaging. Here, we present a simple and scalable approach for the realization of THz focal plane metamaterial array with a relatively high absorption ratio. The key idea is to combine the advantages of substrate-free structures with metamaterial. A 100 x100 THz FPA with a 150 x 150 {mu}m pixel is designed, fabricated, and characterized. The dependence of the THz absorption ratio on the thickness of SiNx dielectric substrate film is investigated. The fabricated FPA exhibits a 90.6% resonant absorption at 1.36 THz, agreeing considerably with the theoretical simulation results. Our results imply that such a substrate-free THz focal plane metamaterial array enables the realization of THz imaging.

We present a method to calibrate a high-resolution wavefront-correcting device with a single, static camera, located in the focal plane; no moving of any component is needed. The method is based on a localized diversity and differential optical trans fer functions (dOTF) to compute both the phase and amplitude in the pupil plane located upstream of the last imaging optics. An experiment with a spatial light modulator shows that the calibration is sufficient to robustly operate a focal-plane wavefront sensing algorithm controlling a wavefront corrector with ~40 000 degrees of freedom. We estimate that the locations of identical wavefront corrector elements are determined with a spatial resolution of 0.3% compared to the pupil diameter.
The model of ideal fluid flow around a cylindrical obstacle exhibits a long-established physical picture where originally straight streamlines will be deflected over the whole space by the obstacle. As inspired by transformation optics and metamateri als, recent theories have proposed the concept of fluid cloaking able to recover the straight streamlines as if the obstacle does not exist. However, such a cloak, similar to all previous transformation-optics-based devices, relies on complex metamaterials, being difficult to implement. Here we deploy the theory of scattering cancellation and report on the experimental realization of a fluid-flow cloak without metamaterials. This cloak is realized by engineering the geometry of the fluid channel, which effectively cancels the dipole-like scattering of the obstacle. The cloaking effect is demonstrated via direct observation of the recovered straight streamlines in the fluid flow with injected dyes. Our work sheds new light on conventional fluid control and may find applications in microfluidic devices.

Ultrafast lasers have revolutionized material processing, opening a wealth of new applications in many areas of science. A recent technology that allows the cleaving of transparent materials via non-ablative processes is based on focusing and transla ting a high-intensity laser beam within a material to induce a well-defined internal stress plane. This then enables material separation without debris generation. Here, we use a non-diffracting beam engineered to have a transverse elliptical spatial profile to generate high aspect ratio elliptical channels in glass of dimension 350 nm x 710 nm, and subsequent cleaved surface uniformity at the sub-micron level.
A new approach for image reconstruction in THz computed tomography (THz-CT) is presented. Based on a geometrical optics model containing the THz signal amplitude and phase, a novel algorithm for extracting an average phase from the measured THz signa ls is derived. Applying the algorithm results in a phase-contrast sinogram, which is further used for image reconstruction. For experimental validation, a fast THz time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) in transmission geometry is employed, enabling CT measurements within several minutes. Quantitative evaluation of reconstructed 3D printed plastic profiles reveals the potential of our approach in non-destructive testing of plastic profiles.
