Plasma outflow or wind against a gravitational potential under the influence of cosmic rays is studied in the context of hydrodynamics. Cosmic rays interact with the plasma via hydromagnetic fluctuations. In the process, cosmic rays advect and diffuse through the plasma. We adopt a multi-fluid model in which besides thermal plasma, cosmic rays and self-excited Alfven waves are also treated as fluids. We seek possible physically allowable steady state solutions of three-fluid (one Alfven wave) and four-fluid (two Alfven waves) models with given the boundary conditions at the base of the potential well. Generally speaking, there are two classes of outflows, subsonic and supersonic (with respect to a suitably defined sound speed). Three-fluid model without cosmic ray diffusion can be studied in the same way as the classic stellar wind problem, and is taken as a reference model. When cosmic ray diffusion is included, there are two categories of solutions. One of them resembles the three-fluid model without diffusion, and the other behaves like thermal wind at large distances when the waves wither and cosmic rays are decoupled from the plasma. We also inspect the effect of wave damping mechanisms (such as, nonlinear Landau damping). Roughly speaking, the effect is much smaller in supersonic outflow than in subsonic outflow.

We give a review of cosmic ray propagation models. It is shown that the development of the theory of cosmic ray origin leads inevitably to the conclusion that cosmic ray propagation in the Galaxy is determined by effective particle scattering, which is described by spatial diffusion. The Galactic Disk is surrounded by an extended halo, in which cosmic rays are confined before escaping into intergalactic space. For a long time cosmic ray convective outflow from the Galaxy (galactic wind) was believed to be insignificant. However, investigations of hydrodynamic stability and an analysis of ISM dynamics (including cosmic rays) showed that a galactic wind was emanating near the disk, and accelerating towards the halo, reaching its maximum velocity far away from the disk. Therefore convective cosmic ray transport should be important in galactic halos. Recent analysis of the gamma-ray emissivity in the Galactic disk of EGRET data, which showed that cosmic rays are more or less uniformly distributed in the radial direction of the disk, as well as the interpretation of soft X-ray emission in galactic halos, give convincing evidence of the existence of a galactic wind in star forming galaxies.
The cores of Arp 220, the closest ultra-luminous infrared starburst galaxy, provide an opportunity to study interactions of cosmic rays under extreme conditions. In this paper, we model the populations of cosmic rays produced by supernovae in the cen tral molecular zones of both starburst nuclei. We find that ~65 - 100% of cosmic rays are absorbed in these regions due to their huge molecular gas contents, and thus, the nuclei of Arp 220 nearly complete proton calorimeters. As the cosmic ray protons collide with the interstellar medium, they produce secondary electrons that are also contained within the system and radiate synchrotron emission. Using results from chi-squared tests between the model and the observed radio spectral energy distribution, we predict the emergent gamma-ray and high-energy neutrino spectra and find the magnetic field to be at milligauss levels. Because of the extremely intense far-infrared radiation fields, the gamma-ray spectrum steepens significantly at TeV energies due to gamma-gamma absorption.
Cosmic rays can interact with the solar atmosphere and produce a slew of secondary messengers, making the Sun a bright gamma-ray source in the sky. Detailed observations with Fermi-LAT have shown that these interactions must be strongly affected by s olar magnetic fields in order to produce the wide range of observational features, such as high flux and hard spectrum. However, the detailed mechanisms behind these features are still a mystery. In this work, we tackle this problem by performing particle-interaction simulations in the solar atmosphere in the presence of coronal magnetic fields modeled using the potential field source surface (PFSS) model. We find that the low-energy (~GeV) gamma-ray production is significantly enhanced by the coronal magnetic fields, but the enhancement decreases rapidly with energy. The enhancement is directly correlated with the production of gamma rays with large deviation angles relative to the input cosmic-ray direction. We conclude that coronal magnetic fields are essential for correctly modeling solar disk gamma rays below 10GeV, but above that the effect of coronal magnetic fields diminishes. Other magnetic field structures are needed to explain the high-energy disk emission.

The first multimessenger observation of a neutron star merger was independently detected in gamma-rays by Fermi-GBM and INTEGRAL SPI-ACS and gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. Gravitational waves are emitted from systems with ac celerating quadrupole moments, and detectable sources are expected to be compact objects. Nearly all distant astrophysical gamma-ray sources are compact objects. Therefore, serendipitous observations of these two messengers will continue to uncover the sources of gravitational waves and gamma-rays, and enable multimessenger science across the Astro2020 thematic areas. This requires upgrades to the ground-based gravitational wave network and ~keV-MeV gamma-ray coverage for observations of neutron star mergers, and broadband coverage in both gravitational waves and gamma-rays to monitor other expected joint sources.

The influence of adiabatic focusing on particle diffusion is an important topic in astrophysics and plasma physics. In the past several authors have explored the influence of along-field adiabatic focusing on parallel diffusion of charged energetic p articles. In this paper by using the Unified NonLinear Transport (UNLT) theory developed by Shalchi (SH2010) and the method of He and Schlickeiser (HS2014) we derive a new nonlinear perpendicular diffusion coefficient for non-uniform background magnetic field. This formula demonstrates that particle perpendicular diffusion coefficient is modified by along-field adiabatic focusing. For isotropic pitch-angle scattering and weak adiabatic focusing limit the derived perpendicular diffusion coefficient is independent of the sign of adiabatic focusing characteristic length. For two-component model we simplify the perpendicular diffusion coefficient up to second order of the power series of adiabatic focusing characteristic quantity. We find that the first order modifying factor is equal to zero and the sign of the second one is determined by the energy of particles.
