Effective Field Theories (EFTs) constructed as derivative expansions in powers of momentum, in the spirit of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT), are a controllable approximation to strong dynamics as long as the energy of the interacting particles remains small, as they do not respect exact elastic unitarity. This limits their predictive power towards new physics at a higher scale if small separations from the Standard Model are found at the LHC or elsewhere. Unitarized chiral perturbation theory techniques have been devised to extend the reach of the EFT to regimes where partial waves are saturating unitarity, but their uncertainties have hitherto not been addressed thoroughly. Here we take one of the best known of them, the Inverse Amplitude Method (IAM), and carefully following its derivation, we quantify the uncertainty introduced at each step. We compare its hadron ChPT and its electroweak sector Higgs EFT applications. We find that the relative theoretical uncertainty of the IAM at the mass of the first resonance encountered in a partial-wave is of the same order in the counting as the starting uncertainty of the EFT at near-threshold energies, so that its unitarized extension should textit{a priori} be expected to be reasonably successful. This is so provided a check for zeroes of the partial wave amplitude is carried out and, if they appear near the resonance region, we show how to modify adequately the IAM to take them into account.

We review a series of unitarization techniques that have been used during the last decades, many of them in connection with the advent and development of current algebra and later of Chiral Perturbation Theory. Several methods are discussed like the generalized effective-range expansion, K-matrix approach, Inverse Amplitude Method, Pade approximants and the N/D method. More details are given for the latter though. We also consider how to implement them in order to correct by final-state interactions. In connection with this some other methods are also introduced like the expansion of the inverse of the form factor, the Omnes solution, generalization to coupled channels and the Khuri-Treiman formalism, among others.

The s-channel unitarity condition for the imaginary part of the hadronic elastic scattering amplitude outside the diffraction peak is studied within different assumptions about the behavior of its real part. The integral equation for the imaginary pa rt is derived with the asymptotical expression for the real part inserted in the unitarity condition. The conclusions about the asymptotical approach to the black disk limit and possible zeros of the imaginary part of the amplitude are obtained. Their relation to the present day experiments is discussed.
We reexamine the relations between the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) wave function of two particles, the on-shell scattering amplitude, and the effective potential in quantum filed theory. It is emphasized that there is an exact relation between the BS wave fu nction inside the interaction range and the scattering amplitude, and the reduced BS wave function, which is defined in this article, plays an essential role in this relation. Based on the exact relation, we show that the solution of Schrodinger equation with the effective potential gives us a correct on-shell scattering amplitude only at the momentum where the effective potential is calculated, while wrong results are obtained from the Schrodinger equation at general momenta. We also discuss about a momentum expansion of the reduced BS wave function and an uncertainty of the scattering amplitude stemming from the choice of the interpolating operator in the BS wave function. The theoretical conclusion obtained in this article could give hints to understand the inconsistency observed in lattice QCD calculation of the two-nucleon channels with different approaches.
The analytic properties of the elastic hadron scattering amplitude are examined in the impact parameter representation at high energies. Different unitarization procedures and the corresponding non-linear equations are presented. Several unitarisatio n schemes are presented. They lead to almost identical results at the LHC.

We explore the use of the Inverse Amplitude Method for unitarization of scattering amplitudes to derive the existence and properties of possible new heavy states associated with perturbative extensions of the electroweak breaking sector of the Standa rd Model starting from the low energy effective theory. We use a toy effective theory generated by integrating out a heavy singlet scalar and compare the pole mass and width of the unitarized amplitudes with those of the original model. Our results show that the Inverse Amplitude Method reproduces correctly the singlet mass up to factors of O(1-3), but its width is overestimated.
