As a concrete setting where stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) are able to model real phenomena, we propose a stochastic Meinhardt model for cell repolarisation and study how parameter estimation techniques developed for simple linear SPDE models apply in this situation. We establish the existence of mild SPDE solutions and we investigate the impact of the driving noise process on pattern formation in the solution. We then pursue estimation of the diffusion term and show asymptotic normality for our estimator as the space resolution becomes finer. The finite sample performance is investigated for synthetic and real data.

In this work we study a class of stochastic processes ${X_t}_{tinN}$, where $X_t = (phi circ T_s^t)(X_0)$ is obtained from the iterations of the transformation T_s, invariant for an ergodic probability mu_s on [0,1] and a continuous by part function $phi:[0,1] to R$. We consider here $T_s:[0,1]to [0,1]$ the Manneville-Pomeau transformation. The autocorrelation function of the resulting process decays hyperbolically (or polynomially) and we obtain efficient methods to estimate the parameter s from a finite time series. As a consequence we also estimate the rate of convergence of the autocorrelation decay of these processes. We compare different estimation methods based on the periodogram function, on the smoothed periodogram function, on the variance of the partial sum and on the wavelet theory.
This work contributes to the limited literature on estimating the diffusivity or drift coefficient of nonlinear SPDEs driven by additive noise. Assuming that the solution is measured locally in space and over a finite time interval, we show that the augmented maximum likelihood estimator introduced in Altmeyer, Reiss (2020) retains its asymptotic properties when used for semilinear SPDEs that satisfy some abstract, and verifiable, conditions. The proofs of asymptotic results are based on splitting the solution in linear and nonlinear parts and fine regularity properties in $L^p$-spaces. The obtained general results are applied to particular classes of equations, including stochastic reaction-diffusion equations. The stochastic Burgers equation, as an example with first order nonlinearity, is an interesting borderline case of the general results, and is treated by a Wiener chaos expansion. We conclude with numerical examples that validate the theoretical results.

Goods formula and Fishers method are frequently used for combining independent P-values. Interestingly, the equivalent of Goods formula already emerged in 1910 and mathematical expressions relevant to even more general situations have been repeatedly derived, albeit in different context. We provide here a novel derivation and show how the analytic formula obtained reduces to the two aforementioned ones as special cases. The main novelty of this paper, however, is the explicit treatment of nearly degenerate weights, which are known to cause numerical instabilities. We derive a controlled expansion, in powers of differences in inverse weights, that provides both accurate statistics and stable numerics.
We propose a time-varying generalization of the Bradley-Terry model that allows for nonparametric modeling of dynamic global rankings of distinct teams. We develop a novel estimator that relies on kernel smoothing to pre-process the pairwise comparis ons over time and is applicable in sparse settings where the Bradley-Terry may not be fit. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of our estimator. We also derive time-varying oracle bounds for both the estimation error and the excess risk in the model-agnostic setting where the Bradley-Terry model is not necessarily the true data generating process. We thoroughly test the practical effectiveness of our model using both simulated and real world data and suggest an efficient data-driven approach for bandwidth tuning.
Ageing of lithium-ion batteries results in irreversible reduction in performance. Intrinsic variability between cells, caused by manufacturing differences, occurs throughout life and increases with age. Researchers need to know the minimum number of cells they should test to give an accurate representation of population variability, since testing many cells is expensive. In this paper, empirical capacity versus time ageing models were fitted to various degradation datasets for commercially available cells assuming the model parameters could be drawn from a larger population distribution. Using a hierarchical Bayesian approach, we estimated the number of cells required to be tested. Depending on the complexity, ageing models with 1, 2 or 3 parameters respectively required data from at least 9, 11 or 13 cells for a consistent fit. This implies researchers will need to test at least these numbers of cells at each test point in their experiment to capture manufacturing variability.
