We describe a technique for particle-based simulations of heterogeneous catalysis in open-cell foam structures, which is based on isotropic Stochastic Rotation Dynamics (iSRD) together with Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG). The approach is validated by means of experimental results for the low temperature water-gas shift reaction in an open-cell foam structure modeled as inverse sphere packing. Considering the relation between Sherwood and Reynolds number, we find two distinct regimes meeting approximately at the strut size Reynolds number 10. For typical parameters from the literature, we find that the catalyst density in the washcoat can be reduced considerably without a notable loss of conversion efficiency. We vary the porosity to determine optimum open-cell foam structures, which combine low flow resistance with high conversion efficiency and find large porosity values to be favorable not only in the mass transfer limited regime but also in the intermediate regime.

We study the mechanical response of an open cell dry foam subjected to periodic forcing using experiments and theory. Using the measurements of the static and dynamic stress-strain relationship, we derive an over-damped model of the foam, as a set of infinitesimal non-linear springs, where the damping term depends on the local foam strain. We then analyse the properties of the foam when subjected to large amplitudes periodic stresses and determine the conditions for which the foam becomes optimally absorbing.
We study the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of a cell-free transcription-translation (TXTL) system. When the TXTL reaction, composed of a large amount of proteins, is concentrated, the uniformly mixed state becomes unstable and membrane-less d roplets form spontaneously. This LLPS droplet formation can be induced when the TXTL reaction is enclosed in water-in-oil emulsion droplets in which water evaporates (dehydration) from the surface. As the emulsion droplets shrink, smaller LLPS droplets appear inside the emulsion droplets and coalesce into phase-separated domains that partition the location of proteins. We show that the LLPS in the emulsion droplets can be accelerated by interfacial drift in the outer oil phase. This further provides an experimental platform for studying the interplay between biological reactions and intracellular phase separation.
Predicting the outcome of a chemical reaction using efficient computational models can be used to develop high-throughput screening techniques. This can significantly reduce the number of experiments needed to be performed in a huge search space, whi ch saves time, effort and expense. Recently, machine learning methods have been bolstering conventional structure-activity relationships used to advance understanding of chemical reactions. We have developed a model to predict the products of catalytic reactions on the surface of oxygen-covered and bare gold using machine learning. Using experimental data, we developed a machine learning model that maps reactants to products, using a chemical space representation. This involves predicting a chemical space value for the products, and then matching this value to a molecular structure chosen from a database. The database was developed by applying a set of possible reaction outcomes using known reaction mechanisms. Our machine learning approach complements chemical intuition in predicting the outcome of several types of chemical reactions. In some cases, machine learning makes correct predictions where chemical intuition fails. We achieve up to 93% prediction accuracy for a small data set of less than two hundred reactions.
We used coherent light scattering in a multi-speckle detection scheme to investigate the mesoscale dynamics in aqueous foam. Time-resolved correlation of the scattered speckle intensities reveals the details of foam dynamics during aging. We introduc e Temporal Contrast Analysis, a novel statistical tool that can be effective in characterizing structural rearrangements. Using Temporal Contrast Analysis we were able to detect two distinct dynamical components present during foam aging: spontaneous and intermittent, avalanche-like events and continuous, flow-like rearrangements in the foam structure. We were able to measure these contributions separately from the intrinsic statistical noise contribution, and thereby independently analyze the decay of each dynamical component during foam aging process.
We study the rheological behavior of mixtures of foams and pastes, which can be described as suspensions of bubbles in yield stress fluids. Model systems are designed by mixing monodisperse aqueous foams and concentrated emulsions. The elastic modulu s of the suspensions decreases with the bubble volume fraction. This decrease is all the sharper as the elastic capillary number (defined as the ratio of the paste elastic modulus to the bubble capillary pressure) is high, which accounts for the softening of the bubbles as compared to the paste. By contrast, the yield stress of most studied materials is not modified by the presence of bubbles. Their plastic behavior is governed by the plastic capillary number, defined as the ratio of the paste yield stress to the bubble capillary pressure. At low plastic capillary number values, bubbles behave as nondeformable inclusions, and we predict that the suspension dimensionless yield stress should remain close to unity. At large plastic capillary number values, we observe bubble breakup during mixing: bubbles are deformed by shear. Finally, at the highest bubble volume fractions, the yield stress increases abruptly: this is interpreted as a foamy yield stress fluid regime, which takes place when the paste mesoscopic constitutive elements are strongly confined in the films between the bubbles.
