A narrow linewidth laser operating at the telecommunications band combined with both fast and wide-band tuning features will have promising applications. Here, we demonstrate a single-mode (both transverse and longitude mode) continuous microlaser around 1535 nm based on a fiber Fabry-Perot microcavity, which achieves wide-band tuning without mode hopping to 1.3 THz range and fast tuning rate to 60 kHz, yields a frequency scan rate of $1.6times10^{17}$ Hz/s. Moreover, the linewidth of the laser is measured as narrow as 3.1 MHz. As the microlaser combines all these features into one fiber component, it can serve as the seed laser for versatile applications in optical communication, sensing, frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar and high resolution imaging.

We report on measurements and modeling of the mode structure of tunable Fabry-Perot optical microcavities with imperfect mirrors. We find that non-spherical mirror shape and finite mirror size lead to loss, mode deformation, and shifted resonance fre quencies at particular mirror separations. For small mirror diameters, the useful cavity length is limited to values significantly below the expected stability range. We explain the observations by resonant coupling between different transverse modes of the cavity and mode-dependent diffraction loss. A model based on resonant state expansion that takes into account the measured mirror profile can reproduce the measurements and identify the parameter regime where detrimental effects of mode mixing are avoided.
We propose a novel photonic structure composed of metal nanolayer, Bragg mirror and metal nanolayer. The structure supports resonances that are transitional between Fabry-Perot and Tamm modes. When the dielectric contrast of the DBR is removed these modes are a pair of conventional Fabry-Perot resonances. They spectrally merge into a Tamm mode at high contrast. Such behavior differs from the results for structures supporting Tamm modes reported earlier. The optical properties of the structure in the frequency range of the DBR stop band, including highly beneficial 50% transmittivity through thick structures, are determined by the introduced in the paper hybrid resonances. The results can find a wide range of photonic applications.
In this work we present a new mechanism for designing phase-gradient metasurfaces (PGMs) to control an electromagnetic wavefront with high efficiency. Specifically, we design a transmission-type PGM formed by a periodic subwavelength metallic slit ar ray filled with identical dielectrics of different heights. It is found that when Fabry-Perot (FP) resonances occur locally inside the dielectric regions, in addition to the common phenomenon of complete transmission, the transmitted phase differences between two adjacent slits are exactly the same, being a non-zero constant. These local FP resonances ensure total phase shift across a supercell that can fully cover the range of 0 to 2Pi, satisfying the design requirements of PGMs. More studies reveal that due to local FP resonances, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the phase difference and the permittivity of the filled dielectric. A similar approach can be extended to the reflection-type case and other wavefront transformation, creating new opportunities for wave manipulation.
Phase coherence of charge carriers leads to electron-wave interference in ballistic mesoscopic conductors. In graphene, such Fabry-Perot-like interference has been observed, but a detailed analysis has been complicated by the two-dimensional nature o f conduction, which allows for complex interference patterns. In this work, we have achieved high-quality Fabry-Perot interference in a suspended graphene device, both in conductance and in shot noise, and analyzed their structure using Fourier transform techniques. The Fourier analysis reveals two sets of overlapping, coexisting interferences, with the ratios of the diamonds being equal to the width to length ratio of the device. We attribute these sets to a unique coexistence of longitudinal and transverse resonances, with the longitudinal resonances originating from the bunching of modes with low transverse momentum. Furthermore, our results give insight into the renormalization of the Fermi velocity in suspended graphene samples, caused by unscreened many-body interactions.
We report an on-chip single mode microlaser with low-threshold fabricated on Erbium doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). The single mode laser emission at 1550.5 nm wavelength is generated in a coupled photonic molecule, which is facilitated by Vernier effect when pumping the photonic molecule at 970 nm. A threshold pump power as low as 200 uW is demonstrated thanks to the high quality factor above 10^6. Moreover, the linewidth of the microlaser reaches 4 kHz, which is the best result in LNOI microlasers. Such single mode micro-laser lithographically fabricated on chip is highly in demand by photonic community.
