The asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM), which describes the interaction between a quantum harmonic oscillator and a biased qubit, arises naturally in circuit quantum electrodynamic circuits and devices. The existence of hidden symmetry in the AQRM leads to a rich energy landscape of conical intersections (CIs) and thus to interesting topological properties. However, current approximations to the AQRM fail to reproduce these CIs correctly. To overcome these limitations we propose a generalized adiabatic approximation (GAA) to describe the energy spectrum of the AQRM. This is achieved by combining the perturbative adiabatic approximation and the exact exceptional solutions to the AQRM. The GAA provides substantial improvement to the existing approaches and pushes the limit of the perturbative treatment into non-perturbative regimes. As a preliminary example of the application of the GAA we calculate the geometric phases around CIs associated with the AQRM.

We present an analytical method for the two-qubit quantum Rabi model. While still operating in the frame of the generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA), our method further embraces the idea of introducing variational parameters. The optimal va lue of the variational parameter is determined by minimizing the energy function of the ground state. Comparing with numerical exact results, we show that our method evidently improves the accuracy of the conventional GRWA in calculating fundamental physical quantities, such as energy spectra, mean photon number, and dynamics. Interestingly, the accuracy of our method allows us to reproduce the asymptotic behavior of mean photon number in large frequency ratio for the ground state and investigate the quasi-periodical structure of the time evolution, which are incapable of being predicted by the GRWA. The applicable parameter ranges cover the ultrastrong coupling regime, which will be helpful to recent experiments.
Starting with the Gaudin-like Bethe ansatz equations associated with the quasi-exactly solved (QES) exceptional points of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) a spectral equivalence is established with QES hyperbolic Schrodinger potentials on the line. This leads to particular QES Poschl-Teller potentials. The complete spectral equivalence is then established between the AQRM and generalised Poschl-Teller potentials. This result extends a previous mapping between the symmetric quantum Rabi model and a QES Poschl-Teller potential. The complete spectral equivalence between the two systems suggests that the physics of the generalised Poschl-Teller potentials may also be explored in experimental realisations of the quantum Rabi model.
The concept of the polaron in condensed matter physics has been extended to the Rabi model, where polarons resulting from the coupling between a two-level system and single-mode photons represent two oppositely displaced oscillators. Interestingly, t unneling between these two displaced oscillators can induce an anti-polaron, which has not been systematically explored in the literature, especially in the presence of an asymmetric term. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the competition between the polaron and anti-polaron under the interplay of the coupling strength and the asymmetric term. While intuitively the anti-polaron should be secondary owing to its higher potential energy, we find that, under certain conditions, the minor anti-polaron may gain a reversal in the weight over the major polaron. If the asymmetric amplitude $epsilon$ is smaller than the harmonic frequency $omega$, such an overweighted anti-polaron can occur beyond a critical value of the coupling strength $g$; if $epsilon$ is larger, the anti-polaron can even be always overweighted at any $g$. We propose that the explicit occurrence of the overweighted anti-polaron can be monitored by a displacement transition from negative to positive values. This displacement is an experimentally accessible observable, which can be measured by quantum optical methods, such as balanced Homodyne detection.

The asymmetric quantum Rabi model with broken parity invariance shows spectral degeneracies in the integer case, that is when the asymmetry parameter equals an integer multiple of half the oscillator frequency, thus hinting at a hidden symmetry and a ccompanying integrability of the model. We study the expectation values of spin observables for each eigenstate and observe characteristic differences between the integer and noninteger cases for the asymptotics in the deep strong coupling regime, which can be understood from a perturbative expansion in the qubit splitting. We also construct a parent Hamiltonian whose exact eigenstates possess the same symmetries as the perturbative eigenstates of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model in the integer case.
We study the geometric curvature and phase of the Rabi model. Under the rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we apply the gauge independent Berry curvature over a surface integral to calculate the Berry phase of the eigenstates for both single and two- qubit systems, which is found to be identical with the system of spin-1/2 particle in a magnetic field. We extend the idea to define a vacuum-induced geometric curvature when the system starts from an initial state with pure vacuum bosonic field. The induced geometric phase is related to the average photon number in a period which is possible to measure in the qubit-cavity system. We also calculate the geometric phase beyond the RWA and find an anomalous sudden change, which implies the breakdown of the adiabatic theorem and the Berry phases in an adiabatic cyclic evolution are ill-defined near the anti-crossing point in the spectrum.
