In teleoperation, research has mainly focused on target approaching, where we deal with the more challenging object manipulation task by advancing the shared control technique. Appropriately manipulating an object is challenging due to the fine motion constraint requirements for a specific manipulation task. Although these motion constraints are critical for task success, they often are subtle when observing ambiguous human motion. The disembodiment problem and physical discrepancy between the human and robot hands bring additional uncertainty, further exaggerating the complications of the object manipulation task. Moreover, there is a lack of planning and modeling techniques that can effectively combine the human and robot agents motion input while considering the ambiguity of the human intent. To overcome this challenge, we built a multi-task robot grasping model and developed an intent-uncertainty-aware grasp planner to generate robust grasp poses given the ambiguous human intent inference inputs. With these validated modeling and planning techniques, it is expected to extend teleoperated robots functionality and adoption in practical telemanipulation scenarios.

Food packing industry workers typically pick a target amount of food by hand from a food tray and place them in containers. Since menus are diverse and change frequently, robots must adapt and learn to handle new foods in a short time-span. Learning to grasp a specific amount of granular food requires a large training dataset, which is challenging to collect reasonably quickly. In this study, we propose ways to reduce the necessary amount of training data by augmenting a deep neural network with models that estimate its uncertainty through self-supervised learning. To further reduce human effort, we devise a data collection system that automatically generates labels. We build on the idea that we can grasp sufficiently well if there is at least one low-uncertainty (high-confidence) grasp point among the various grasp point candidates. We evaluate the methods we propose in this work on a variety of granular foods -- coffee beans, rice, oatmeal and peanuts -- each of which has a different size, shape and material properties such as volumetric mass density or friction. For these foods, we show significantly improved grasp accuracy of user-specified target masses using smaller datasets by incorporating uncertainty.
Efficient motion intent communication is necessary for safe and collaborative work environments with collocated humans and robots. Humans efficiently communicate their motion intent to other humans through gestures, gaze, and social cues. However, ro bots often have difficulty efficiently communicating their motion intent to humans via these methods. Many existing methods for robot motion intent communication rely on 2D displays, which require the human to continually pause their work and check a visualization. We propose a mixed reality head-mounted display visualization of the proposed robot motion over the wearers real-world view of the robot and its environment. To evaluate the effectiveness of this system against a 2D display visualization and against no visualization, we asked 32 participants to labeled different robot arm motions as either colliding or non-colliding with blocks on a table. We found a 16% increase in accuracy with a 62% decrease in the time it took to complete the task compared to the next best system. This demonstrates that a mixed-reality HMD allows a human to more quickly and accurately tell where the robot is going to move than the compared baselines.
Motion planning is a fundamental problem and focuses on finding control inputs that enable a robot to reach a goal region while safely avoiding obstacles. However, in many situations, the state of the system may not be known but only estimated using, for instance, a Kalman filter. This results in a novel motion planning problem where safety must be ensured in the presence of state estimation uncertainty. Previous approaches to this problem are either conservative or integrate state estimates optimistically which leads to non-robust solutions. Optimistic solutions require frequent replanning to not endanger the safety of the system. We propose a new formulation to this problem with the aim to be robust to state estimation errors while not being overly conservative. In particular, we formulate a stochastic optimal control problem that contains robustified risk-aware safety constraints by incorporating robustness margins to account for state estimation errors. We propose a novel sampling-based approach that builds trees exploring the reachable space of Gaussian distributions that capture uncertainty both in state estimation and in future measurements. We provide robustness guarantees and show, both in theory and simulations, that the induced robustness margins constitute a trade-off between conservatism and robustness for planning under estimation uncertainty that allows to control the frequency of replanning.
Model Predictive Control (MPC) has shown the great performance of target optimization and constraint satisfaction. However, the heavy computation of the Optimal Control Problem (OCP) at each triggering instant brings the serious delay from state samp ling to the control signals, which limits the applications of MPC in resource-limited robot manipulator systems over complicated tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel robust tube-based smooth-MPC strategy for nonlinear robot manipulator planning systems with disturbances and constraints. Based on piecewise linearization and state prediction, our control strategy improves the smoothness and optimizes the delay of the control process. By deducing the deviation of the real system states and the nominal system states, we can predict the next real state set at the current instant. And by using this state set as the initial condition, we can solve the next OCP ahead and store the optimal controls based on the nominal system states, which eliminates the delay. Furthermore, we linearize the nonlinear system with a given upper bound of error, reducing the complexity of the OCP and improving the response speed. Based on the theoretical framework of tube MPC, we prove that the control strategy is recursively feasible and closed-loop stable with the constraints and disturbances. Numerical simulations have verified the efficacy of the designed approach compared with the conventional MPC.
The ability to develop a high-level understanding of a scene, such as perceiving danger levels, can prove valuable in planning multi-robot search and rescue (SaR) missions. In this work, we propose to uniquely leverage natural language descriptions f rom the mission commander in chief and image data captured by robots to estimate scene danger. Given a description and an image, a state-of-the-art deep neural network is used to assess a corresponding similarity score, which is then converted into a probabilistic distribution of danger levels. Because commonly used visio-linguistic datasets do not represent SaR missions well, we collect a large-scale image-description dataset from synthetic images taken from realistic disaster scenes and use it to train our machine learning model. A risk-aware variant of the Multi-robot Efficient Search Path Planning (MESPP) problem is then formulated to use the danger estimates in order to account for high-risk locations in the environment when planning the searchers paths. The problem is solved via a distributed approach based on Mixed-Integer Linear Programming. Our experiments demonstrate that our framework allows to plan safer yet highly successful search missions, abiding to the two most important aspects of SaR missions: to ensure both searchers and victim safety.
