Thermal rectification which is a diode-like behavior of heat flux has been studied over a long time. However, a universal and systematic physical description is still lacking. In this letter, a perturbation theory of thermal rectification is developed, which provides an analytical formula of the thermal rectification ratio. It reveals the linear relationship between the thermal rectification ratio and temperature difference. Furthermore, the size-dependence of the thermal rectification relies on the specific form of the thermal conductivity. In addition, several experimental and numerical observations in previous literatures are well explained. This theory can be applicable to any system in which a differentiable effective thermal conductivity can be derived, and is helpful to unveil general principle for thermal rectification.

By means of fluctuationnal electrodynamics, we calculate radiative heat flux between two pla-nar materials respectively made of SiC and SiO2. More specifically, we focus on a first (direct) situation where one of the two materials (for example SiC) i s at ambient temperature whereas the second material is at a higher one, then we study a second (reverse) situation where the material temperatures are inverted. When the two fluxes corresponding to the two situations are different, the materials are said to exhibit a thermal rectification, a property with potential applications in thermal regulation. Rectification variations with temperature and separation distance are here reported. Calculations are performed using material optical data experimentally determined by Fourier transform emission spectrometry of heated materials between ambient temperature (around 300 K) and 1480 K. It is shown that rectification is much more important in the near-field domain, i.e. at separation distances smaller than the thermal wavelength. In addition, we see that the larger is the temperature difference, the larger is rectification. Large rectification is finally interpreted due to a weakening of the SiC surface polariton when temperature increases, a weakening which affects much less SiO2 resonances.
Radiative thermal diodes based on two-element structures rectify heat flows thanks to a temperature dependence of material optical properties. The heat transport asymmetry through these systems, however, remains weak without a significant change in m aterial properties with the temperature. Here we explore the heat transport in three-element radiative systems and demonstrate that a strong asymmetry in the thermal conductance can appear because of many-body interactions, without any dependence of optical properties on the temperature. The analysis of transport in three-body systems made with polar dielectrics and metallic layers reveals that rectification coefficients exceeding 50 % can be achieved in the near-field regime with temperature differences of about 200 K. This work paves the way for compact devices to rectify near field radiative heat fluxes over a broad temperature range and could have important applications in the domain of nanoscale thermal management.
We report the realization of an ultra-efficient low-temperature hybrid heat current rectifier, thermal counterpart of the well-known electric diode. Our design is based on a tunnel junction between two different elements: a normal metal and a superco nducting island. Electronic heat current asymmetry in the structure arises from large mismatch between the thermal properties of these two. We demonstrate experimentally temperature differences exceeding $60$ mK between the forward and reverse thermal bias configurations. Our device offers a remarkably large heat rectification ratio up to $sim 140$ and allows its prompt implementation in true solid-state thermal nanocircuits and general-purpose electronic applications requiring energy harvesting or thermal management and isolation at the nanoscale.
We investigate electronic thermal rectification in ferromagnetic insulator-based superconducting tunnel junctions. Ferromagnetic insulators coupled to superconductors are known to induce sizable spin splitting in the superconducting density of states , and also lead to efficient spin filtering if operated as tunnel barriers. The combination of spin splitting and spin filtering is shown to yield a substantial self-amplification of the electronic heat diode effect due to breaking of the electron-hole symmetry in the system which is added to the thermal asymmetry of the junction. Large spin splitting and large spin polarization can potentially lead to thermal rectification efficiency exceeding 5 .10^4 for realistic parameters in a suitable temperature range, thereby outperforming up to a factor of 250 the heat diode effect achievable with conventional superconducting tunnel junctions. These results could be relevant for improved mastering of the heat currents in innovative phase-coherent caloritronic nanodevices, and for enhanced thermal management of quantum circuits at the nanoscale.

We investigate the rectification of heat current carried by electrons through a double quantum dot (DQD) system under a temperature bias. The DQD can be realized by molecules such as suspended carbon nanotube and be described by the Anderson-Holstein model in presence of electron-phonon interaction. Strong electron-phonon interaction can lead to formation of polaronic states in which electronic states are dressed by phonon cloud. Dressed tunneling approximation (DTA), which is nonperturbative in dealing with strong electron-phonon interaction, is employed to obtain the heat current expression. In DTA, self-energies are dressed by phonon cloud operator and are temperature dependent. The temperature dependency of imaginary part of dressed retarded self-energy gives rise to the asymmetry of the system and is the necessary condition of thermal rectification. On top of this, one can either tune DQD effective energy levels such that $|bar{epsilon}_1| eq |bar{epsilon}_2|$ or have asymmetric dot-lead couplings to achieve thermal rectification. We numerically find that increasing electron-phonon coupling and reducing inter dot coupling can both improve thermal rectification effect, while the electronic heat current is reduced.
