We study a metric cubic gravity theory considering odd-parity modes of linear inhomogeneous perturbations on a spatially homogeneous Bianchi type I manifold close to the isotropic de Sitter spacetime. We show that in the regime of small anisotropy, the theory possesses new degrees of freedom compared to General Relativity, whose kinetic energy vanishes in the limit of exact isotropy. From the mass dispersion relation we show that such theory always possesses at least one ghost mode as well as a very short-time-scale (compared to the Hubble time) classical tachyonic (or ghost-tachyonic) instability. In order to confirm our analytic analysis, we also solve the equations of motion numerically and we find that this instability is developed well before a single e-fold of the scale factor. This shows that this gravity theory, as it is, cannot be used to construct viable cosmological models.

We investigate a cosmological model resulting from a dimensional reduction of the higher-dimensional dRGT massive gravity. By using the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction, we obtain an effective four-dimensional massive gravity theory with a scalar f ield. It is found that the resulting theory corresponds to a combined description of mass-varying massive gravity and quasi-dilaton massive gravity. By analyzing the cosmological solution, we found that it is possible to obtain the late-time expansion of the universe due to the graviton mass. By using a dynamical system approach, we found regions of model parameters for which the late-time expansion of the universe is a stable fixed point. Moreover, this also provides a mechanism to stabilize the extra dimensions.
In this paper, we shall consider spherically symmetric spacetime solutions describing the interior of stellar compact objects, in the context of higher-order curvature theory of the f(R) type. We shall derive the non--vacuum field equations of the hi gher-order curvature theory, without assuming any specific form of the $mathrm{f(R)}$ theory, specifying the analysis for a spherically symmetric spacetime with two unknown functions. We obtain a system of highly non-linear differential equations, which consists of four differential equations with six unknown functions. To solve such a system, we assume a specific form of metric potentials, using the Krori-Barua ansatz. We successfully solve the system of differential equations, and we derive all the components of the energy-momentum tensor. Moreover, we derive the non-trivial general form of $mathrm{f(R)}$ that may generate such solutions and calculate the dynamic Ricci scalar of the anisotropic star. Accordingly, we calculate the asymptotic form of the function $mathrm{f(R)}$, which is a polynomial function. We match the derived interior solution with the exterior one, which was derived in cite{Nashed:2019tuk}, with the latter also resulting in a non-trivial form of the Ricci scalar. Notably but rather expected, the exterior solution differs from the Schwarzschild one in the context of general relativity. The matching procedure will eventually relate two constants with the mass and radius of the compact stellar object. We list the necessary conditions that any compact anisotropic star must satisfy and explain in detail that our model bypasses all of these conditions for a special compact star $textit {Her X--1 }$, which has an estimated mass and radius textit {(mass = 0.85 $pm 0.15M_{circledcirc}$,, and, ,radius $= 8.1 pm 0.41$km)}.
We propose a modified gravity theory that propagates only two local gravitational degrees of freedom and that does not have an Einstein frame. According to the classification in JCAP 01 (2019) 017 [arXiv:1810.01047 [gr-qc]], this is a type-II minimal ly modified gravity theory. The theory is characterized by the gravitational constant $G_{rm N}$ and a function $V(phi)$ of a non-dynamical auxiliary field $phi$ that plays the role of dark energy. Once one fixes a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological background, the form of $V(phi)$ is determined and the theory no longer possesses a free parameter or a free function, besides $G_{rm N}$. For $V(phi) = 0$ the theory reduces to general relativity (GR) with $G_N$ being the Newtons constant and $V=const.$ being the cosmological constant. For $V(phi) e 0$, it is shown that gravity behaves differently from GR but that GR with $G_{rm N}$ being the Newtons constant is recovered for weak gravity at distance and time scales sufficiently shorter than the scale associated with $V(phi)$. Therefore this theory provides the simplest framework of cosmology in which deviations from GR can be tested by observational data.

Two types of mimetic gravity models with higher derivatives of the mimetic field are analyzed in the Hamiltonian formalism. For the first type of mimetic gravity, the Ricci scalar only couples to the mimetic field and we demonstrate the number of deg rees of freedom (DOFs) is three. Then in both Einstein frame and Jordan frame, we perform the Hamiltonian analysis for the extended mimetic gravity with higher derivatives directly coupled to the Ricci scalar. We show that different from previous studies working at the cosmological perturbation level, where only three propagating DOFs show up, this generalized mimetic model, in general, has four DOFs. To understand this discrepancy, we consider the unitary gauge and find out that the number of DOFs reduces to three. We conclude that the reason why this system looks peculiar is that the Dirac matrix of all secondary constraints becomes singular in the unitary gauge, resulting in extra secondary constraints and thus reducing the number of DOFs. Furthermore, we give a simple example of a dynamic system to illustrate how gauge choice can affect the number of secondary constraints as well as the DOFs when the rank of the Dirac matrix is gauge dependent.
We discuss mimetic gravity theories with direct couplings between the curvature and higher derivatives of the scalar field, up to the quintic order, which were proposed to solve the instability problem for linear perturbations around the FLRW backgro und for this kind of models. Restricting to homogeneous scalar field configurations in the action, we derive degeneracy conditions to obtain an effective field theory with three degrees of freedom. However, performing the Hamiltonian analysis for a generic scalar field we show that there are in general four or more degrees of freedom. The discrepancy is resolved because, for a homogeneous scalar field profile, $partial_ivarphiapprox 0$, the Dirac matrix becomes singular, resulting in further constraints, which reduces the number of degrees of freedom to three. Similarly, in linear perturbation theory the additional scalar degree of freedom can only be seen by considering a non-homogeneous background profile of the scalar field. Therefore, restricting to homogeneous scalar fields these kinds of models provide viable explicitly Lorentz violating effective field theories of mimetic gravity.
