A detailed temperature and pressure investigation on BiGdO$_{3}$ is carried out by means of dielectric constant, piezoelectric current, polarization-electric field loop, Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements. Temperature dependent dielectric constant and dielectric loss show two anomalies at about 290 K (T$_r$) and 720 K (T$_C$). The later anomaly is most likely due to antiferroelectric to paraelectric transition as hinted by piezoelectric current and polarization-electric field loop measurements at room temperature, while the former anomaly suggests reorientation of polarization. Cubic to orthorhombic structural transition is observed at about 10 GPa in high pressure x-ray diffraction studies accompanied by anisotropic lattice parameter changes. An expansion about 30 % along $a$-axis and 15 % contraction along $b$-axis during the structural transition result in 9.5 % expansion in unit cell volume. This structural transition is corroborated by anomalous softening and large increase in full width half maximum (FWHM) of 640 cm$^{-1}$ Raman mode above 10 GPa. Enhancement of large structural distortion and significant volume expansion during the structural transition indicate towards an antiferroelectric to ferroelectric transition in the system.

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the melting curve and the structural behavior of vanadium under extreme pressure and temperature. We performed powder x-ray diffraction experiments up to 120 GPa and 4000 K, determining the p hase boundary of the bcc-to-rhombohedral transition and melting temperatures at different pressures. Melting temperatures have also been established from the observation of temperature plateaus during laser heating, and the results from the density-functional theory calculations. Results obtained from our experiments and calculations are fully consistent and lead to an accurate determination of the melting curve of vanadium. These results are discussed in comparison with previous studies. The melting temperatures determined in this study are higher than those previously obtained using the speckle method, but also considerably lower than those obtained from shock-wave experiments and linear muffin-tin orbital calculations. Finally, a high-pressure high-temperature equation of state up to 120 GPa and 2800 K has also been determined.
SrMoO4 was studied under compression up to 25 GPa by angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction. A phase transition was observed from the scheelite-structured ambient phase to a monoclinic fergusonite phase at 12.2(9) GPa with cell parameters a = 5.265(9) A, b = 11.191(9) A, c = 5.195 (5) A, and beta = 90.9, Z = 4 at 13.1 GPa. There is no significant volume collapse at the phase transition. No additional phase transitions were observed and on release of pressure the initial phase is recovered, implying that the observed structural modifications are reversible. The reported transition appeared to be a ferroelastic second-order transformation producing a structure that is a monoclinic distortion of the low-pressure phase and was previously observed in compounds isostructural to SrMoO4. A possible mechanism for the transition is proposed and its character is discussed in terms of the present data and the Landau theory. Finally, the EOS is reported and the anisotropic compressibility of the studied crystal is discussed in terms of the compression of the Sr-O and Mo-O bonds.

Ti50 Pd50-xCrx is a high temperature shape memory alloy with a martensitic transformation temperature strongly dependent on the Cr composition. Prior to the transformation a premartensitic phase is present with an incommensurate modulated cubic latti ce with wave vector of q0=(0.22, 0.22, 0). The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering in the cubic phase is measured as a function temperature for x=6.5, 8.5, and 10 at. %. The lattice dynamics has been studied and reveals anomalous temperature and q-dependence of the [110]-TA2 transverse phonon branch. The phonon linewidth is broad over the entire Brillouin zone and increases with decreasing temperature, contrary to the behavior expected for anharmonicity. No anomaly is observed at q0. The results are compared with first principles calculation of the phonon structure.
We study lanthanum mononitride LaN by first-principles calculations. The commonly reported rock-salt structure of $Fmbar{3}m$ symmetry for rare-earth monopnictides is found dynamically unstable for LaN at zero temperature. Using density functional th eory and evolutionary crystal prediction, we discover a new, dynamically stable structure with $P1$ symmetry at 0 K. This $P1$-LaN exhibits spontaneous electric polarization. Our ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of finite-temperature phonon spectra further suggest that LaN will undergo ferroelectric and structural transitions from $P1$ to $Fmbar{3}m$ symmetry, when temperature is increased. Moreover, $P1$-LaN will transform to a tetragonal structure with $P4/nmm$ symmetry at a critical pressure $P=18$ GPa at 0 K. Electronic structures computed with an advanced hybrid functional show that the high-temperature rock-salt LaN can change from a trivial insulator to a strong topological insulator at $P sim 14$ GPa. Together, our results indicate that when $P=14 - 18$ GPa, LaN can show simultaneous temperature-induced structural, ferroelectric, and topological transitions. Lanthanum monopnictides thereby provide a rich playground for exploring novel phases and phase transitions driven by temperature and pressure.
The structural properties of Thallium (III) oxide (Tl2O3) have been studied both experimentally and theoretically under compression at room temperature. X-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 37.7 GPa have been complemented with ab initio total- energy calculations. The equation of state of Tl2O3 has been determined and compared to related compounds. It has been found experimentally that Tl2O3 remains in its initial cubic bixbyite-type structure up to 22.0 GPa. At this pressure, the onset of amorphization is observed, being the sample fully amorphous at 25.2 GPa. The sample retains the amorphous state after pressure release. To understand the pressure-induced amorphization process, we have studied theoretically the possible high-pressure phases of Tl2O3. Although a phase transition is predicted at 5.8 GPa to the orthorhombic Rh2O3-II-type structure and at 24.2 GPa to the orthorhombic a-Gd2S3-type structure, neither of these phases were observed experimentally, probably due to the hindrance of the pressure-driven phase transitions at room temperature. The theoretical study of the elastic behavior of the cubic bixbyite-type structure at high-pressure shows that amorphization above 22 GPa at room temperature might be caused by the mechanical instability of the cubic bixbyite-type structure which is theoretically predicted above 23.5 GPa.
