In this work, we present a switched relaying framework for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems where a source node may transmit directly to a destination node or aided by relays. We also investigate relay selection techniques for the proposed switched relaying framework, whose relays are equipped with buffers. In particular, we develop a novel relay selection protocol based on switching and the selection of the best link, denoted as Switched Max-Link. We then propose the Maximum Minimum Distance (MMD) relay selection criterion for MIMO systems, which is based on the optimal Maximum Likelihood (ML) principle and can provide significant performance gains over other criteria, along with algorithms that are incorporated into the proposed Switched Max-Link protocol. An analysis of the proposed Switched Max-Link protocol and the MMD relay selection criterion in terms of computational cost, pairwise error probability, sum-rate and average delay is carried out. Simulations show that Switched Max-Link using the MMD criterion outperforms previous works in terms of sum-rate, pairwise error probability, average delay and bit error rate.

In this work, we present a cloud-aided uplink framework for multi-way multiple-antenna relay systems which facilitates joint linear Maximum Likelihood (ML) symbol detection in the cloud and where users are selected to simultaneously transmit to each other aided by relays. We also investigate relay selection techniques for the proposed cloud-aided uplink framework that uses cloud-based buffers and physical-layer network coding. In particular, we develop a novel multi-way relay selection protocol based on the selection of the best link, denoted as Multi-Way Cloud-Aided Best-User-Link (MWC-Best-User-Link). We then devise the maximum minimum distance relay selection criterion along with the algorithm that is incorporated into the proposed MWC-Best-User-Link protocol. Simulations show that MWC-Best-User-Link outperforms previous works in terms of average delay, sum-rate and bit error rate.
The combination of energy harvesting and large-scale multiple antenna technologies provides a promising solution for improving the energy efficiency (EE) by exploiting renewable energy sources and reducing the transmission power per user and per ante nna. However, the introduction of energy harvesting capabilities into large-scale multiple antenna systems poses many new challenges for energy-efficient system design due to the intermittent characteristics of renewable energy sources and limited battery capacity. Furthermore, the total manufacture cost and the sum power of a large number of radio frequency (RF) chains can not be ignored, and it would be impractical to use all the antennas for transmission. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient antenna selection and power allocation algorithm to maximize the EE subject to the constraint of users quality of service (QoS). An iterative offline optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the non-convex EE optimization problem by exploiting the properties of nonlinear fractional programming. The relationships among maximum EE, selected antenna number, battery capacity, and EE-SE tradeoff are analyzed and verified through computer simulations.
Transmit signal and bandwidth optimization is considered in multiple-antenna relay channels. Assuming all terminals have channel state information, the cut-set capacity upper bound and decode-and-forward rate under full-duplex relaying are evaluated by formulating them as convex optimization problems. For half-duplex relays, bandwidth allocation and transmit signals are optimized jointly. Moreover, achievable rates based on the compress-and-forward transmission strategy are presented using rate-distortion and Wyner-Ziv compression schemes. It is observed that when the relay is close to the source, decode-and-forward is almost optimal, whereas compress-and-forward achieves good performance when the relay is close to the destination.
The capacity regions are investigated for two relay broadcast channels (RBCs), where relay links are incorporated into standard two-user broadcast channels to support user cooperation. In the first channel, the Partially Cooperative Relay Broadcast C hannel, only one user in the system can act as a relay and transmit to the other user through a relay link. An achievable rate region is derived based on the relay using the decode-and-forward scheme. An outer bound on the capacity region is derived and is shown to be tighter than the cut-set bound. For the special case where the Partially Cooperative RBC is degraded, the achievable rate region is shown to be tight and provides the capacity region. Gaussian Partially Cooperative RBCs and Partially Cooperative RBCs with feedback are further studied. In the second channel model being studied in the paper, the Fully Cooperative Relay Broadcast Channel, both users can act as relay nodes and transmit to each other through relay links. This is a more general model than the Partially Cooperative RBC. All the results for Partially Cooperative RBCs are correspondingly generalized to the Fully Cooperative RBCs. It is further shown that the AWGN Fully Cooperative RBC has a larger achievable rate region than the AWGN Partially Cooperative RBC. The results illustrate that relaying and user cooperation are powerful techniques in improving the capacity of broadcast channels.
In this paper, we consider a three-node cooperative wireless powered communication system consisting of a multi-antenna hybrid access point (H-AP) and a single-antenna relay and a single-antenna user. The energy constrained relay and user first harve st energy in the downlink and then the relay assists the user using the harvested power for information transmission in the uplink. The optimal energy beamforming vector and the time split between harvest and cooperation are investigated. To reduce the computational complexity, suboptimal designs are also studied, where closed-form expressions are derived for the energy beamforming vector and the time split. For comparison purposes, we also present a detailed performance analysis in terms of the achievable outage probability and the average throughput of an intuitive energy beamforming scheme, where the H-AP directs all the energy towards the user. The findings of the paper suggest that implementing multiple antennas at the H-AP can significantly improve the system performance, and the closed-form suboptimal energy beamforming vector and time split yields near optimal performance. Also, for the intuitive beamforming scheme, a diversity order of (N+1)/2 can be achieved, where N is the number of antennas at the H-AP.
