We present Uncertainty-aware Cascaded Stereo Network (UCS-Net) for 3D reconstruction from multiple RGB images. Multi-view stereo (MVS) aims to reconstruct fine-grained scene geometry from multi-view images. Previous learning-based MVS methods estimate per-view depth using plane sweep volumes with a fixed depth hypothesis at each plane; this generally requires densely sampled planes for desired accuracy, and it is very hard to achieve high-resolution depth. In contrast, we propose adaptive thin volumes (ATVs); in an ATV, the depth hypothesis of each plane is spatially varying, which adapts to the uncertainties of previous per-pixel depth predictions. Our UCS-Net has three stages: the first stage processes a small standard plane sweep volume to predict low-resolution depth; two ATVs are then used in the following stages to refine the depth with higher resolution and higher accuracy. Our ATV consists of only a small number of planes; yet, it efficiently partitions local depth ranges within learned small intervals. In particular, we propose to use variance-based uncertainty estimates to adaptively construct ATVs; this differentiable process introduces reasonable and fine-grained spatial partitioning. Our multi-stage framework progressively subdivides the vast scene space with increasing depth resolution and precision, which enables scene reconstruction with high completeness and accuracy in a coarse-to-fine fashion. We demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance compared with state-of-the-art benchmarks on various challenging datasets.

This paper presented a deep reinforcement learning method named Double Deep Q-networks to design an end-to-end vision-based adaptive cruise control (ACC) system. A simulation environment of a highway scene was set up in Unity, which is a game engine that provided both physical models of vehicles and feature data for training and testing. Well-designed reward functions associated with the following distance and throttle/brake force were implemented in the reinforcement learning model for both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EV) to perform adaptive cruise control. The gap statistics and total energy consumption are evaluated for different vehicle types to explore the relationship between reward functions and powertrain characteristics. Compared with the traditional radar-based ACC systems or human-in-the-loop simulation, the proposed vision-based ACC system can generate either a better gap regulated trajectory or a smoother speed trajectory depending on the preset reward function. The proposed system can be well adaptive to different speed trajectories of the preceding vehicle and operated in real-time.

Existing vision systems for autonomous driving or robots are sensitive to waterdrops adhered to windows or camera lenses. Most recent waterdrop removal approaches take a single image as input and often fail to recover the missing content behind water drops faithfully. Thus, we propose a learning-based model for waterdrop removal with stereo images. To better detect and remove waterdrops from stereo images, we propose a novel row-wise dilated attention module to enlarge attentions receptive field for effective information propagation between the two stereo images. In addition, we propose an attention consistency loss between the ground-truth disparity map and attention scores to enhance the left-right consistency in stereo images. Because of related datasets unavailability, we collect a real-world dataset that contains stereo images with and without waterdrops. Extensive experiments on our dataset suggest that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. To perform high speed tasks, sensors of autonomous cars have to provide as much information in as few time steps as possible. However, radars, one of the sensor modalities autonomous cars heavily rely on, often only provide sparse, noisy detections. These have to be accumulated over time to reach a high enough confidence about the static parts of the environment. For radars, the state is typically estimated by accumulating inverse detection models (IDMs). We employ the recently proposed evidential convolutional neural networks which, in contrast to IDMs, compute dense, spatially coherent inference of the environment state. Moreover, these networks are able to incorporate sensor noise in a principled way which we further extend to also incorporate model uncertainty. We present experimental results that show This makes it possible to obtain a denser environment perception in fewer time steps.
Deep end-to-end learning based stereo matching methods have achieved great success as witnessed by the leaderboards across different benchmarking datasets (KITTI, Middlebury, ETH3D, etc). However, real scenarios not only require approaches to have st ate-of-the-art performance but also real-time speed and domain-across generalization, which cannot be satisfied by existing methods. In this paper, we propose MSMD-Net (Multi-Scale and Multi-Dimension) to construct multi-scale and multi-dimension cost volume. At the multi-scale level, we generate four 4D combination volumes at different scales and integrate them with an encoder-decoder process to predict an initial disparity estimation. At the multi-dimension level, we additionally construct a 3D warped correlation volume and use it to refine the initial disparity map with residual learning. These two dimensional cost volumes are complementary to each other and can boost the performance of disparity estimation. Additionally, we propose a switch training strategy to alleviate the overfitting issue appeared in the pre-training process and further improve the generalization ability and accuracy of final disparity estimation. Our proposed method was evaluated on several benchmark datasets and ranked first on KITTI 2012 leaderboard and second on KITTI 2015 leaderboard as of September 9. In addition, our method shows strong domain-across generalization and outperforms best prior work by a noteworthy margin with three or even five times faster speed. Depth estimation from stereo images is carried out with unmatched results by convolutional neural networks trained end-to-end to regress dense disparities. Like for most tasks, this is possible if large amounts of labelled samples are available for t raining, possibly covering the whole data distribution encountered at deployment time. Being such an assumption systematically unmet in real applications, the capacity of adapting to any unseen setting becomes of paramount importance. Purposely, we propose a continual adaptation paradigm for deep stereo networks designed to deal with challenging and ever-changing environments. We design a lightweight and modular architecture, Modularly ADaptive Network (MADNet), and formulate Modular ADaptation algorithms (MAD, MAD++) which permit efficient optimization of independent sub-portions of the entire network. In our paradigm, the learning signals needed to continuously adapt models online can be sourced from self-supervision via right-to-left image warping or from traditional stereo algorithms. With both sources, no other data than the input images being gathered at deployment time are needed. Thus, our network architecture and adaptation algorithms realize the first real-time self-adaptive deep stereo system and pave the way for a new paradigm that can facilitate practical deployment of end-to-end architectures for dense disparity regression.
