Quantum transport in magnetic topological insulators reveals the strong interplay between the magnetism and topology of electronic band structures. A recent experiment on magnetically doped topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films showed the anomalous temperature dependence of the magnetoconductivity while their field dependence presents a clear signature of weak anti-localization [Tkac et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036406(2019)]. Here we demonstrate that the tiny mass of the surface electrons induced by the bulk magnetization leads to a temperature-dependent correction to the pi Berry phase, and generates a decoherence mechanism to the phase coherence length of the surface electrons. As a consequence, the quantum correction to the conductivity can exhibit non-monotonic behavior by decreasing the temperature. This effect is attributed to the close relation of the Berry phase and quantum interference of the topological surface electrons in quantum topological materials.

Magnetotransport constitutes a useful probe to understand the interplay between electronic band topology and magnetism in spintronics devices based on topological materials. A recent theory of Lu and Shen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 146601 (2014)] on magn etically doped topological insulators predicts that quantum corrections $Deltakappa$ to the temperature-dependence of the conductivity can change sign during the Curie transition. This phenomenon has been attributed to a suppression of the Berry phase of the topological surface states at the Fermi level, caused by a magnetic energy gap. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that $Deltakappa$ can reverse its sign even when the Berry phase at the Fermi level remains unchanged, provided that the inelastic scattering length decreases with temperature below the Curie transition.
The low-energy physics of two-dimensional Quantum Anomalous Hall insulators like (Hg,Mn)Te quantum wells or magnetically doped (Bi,Sb)Te thin films can be effectively described by two Chern insulators, including a Dirac, as well as a momentum-depende nt mass term. Each of those Chern insulators is directly related to the parity anomaly of planar quantum electrodynamics. In this work, we analyze the finite temperature Hall conductivity of a single Chern insulator in 2+1 space-time dimensions under the influence of a chemical potential and an out-of-plane magnetic field. At zero magnetic field, this non-dissipative transport coefficient originates from the parity anomaly of planar quantum electrodynamics. We show that the parity anomaly itself is not renormalized by finite temperature effects. However, it induces two terms of different physical origin in the effective action of a Chern insulator, which is proportional to the Hall conductivity. The first term is temperature and chemical potential independent, and solely encodes the intrinsic topological response. The second term specifies the non-topological thermal response of conduction and valence band states. In particular, we show that the relativistic mass of a Chern insulator counteracts finite temperature effects, whereas its non-relativistic mass enhances these corrections. Moreover, we extend our analysis to finite magnetic fields and relate the thermal response of a Chern insulator therein to the spectral asymmetry, which is a measure of the parity anomaly in orbital fields.
The anomalous Floquet Anderson insulator (AFAI) is a two dimensional periodically driven system in which static disorder stabilizes two topologically distinct phases in the thermodynamic limit. The presence of a unit-conducting chiral edge mode and t he essential role of disorder induced localization are reminiscent of the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect. At the same time, chirality in the AFAI is introduced via an orchestrated driving protocol, there is no magnetic field, no energy conservation, and no (Landau level) band structure. In this paper we show that in spite of these differences the AFAI topological phase transition is in the IQH universality class. We do so by mapping the system onto an effective theory describing phase coherent transport in the system at large length scales. Unlike with other disordered systems, the form of this theory is almost fully determined by symmetry and topological consistency criteria, and can even be guessed without calculation. (However, we back this expectation by a first principle derivation.) Its equivalence to the Pruisken theory of the IQH demonstrates the above equivalence. At the same time it makes predictions on the emergent quantization of transport coefficients, and the delocalization of bulk states at quantum criticality which we test against numerical simulations.

As one of paradigmatic phenomena in condensed matter physics, the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in stoichiometric Chern insulators has drawn great interest for years. By using model Hamiltonian analysis and first-principle calculations, we est ablish a topological phase diagram and map on it with different two-dimensional configurations, which is taken from the recently-grown magnetic topological insulators MnBi4Te7 and MnBi6Te10 with superlattice-like stacking patterns. These configurations manifest various topological phases, including quantum spin Hall effect with and without time-reversal symmetry, as well as QAHE. We then provide design principles to trigger QAHE by tuning experimentally accessible knobs, such as slab thickness and magnetization. Our work reveals that superlattice-like magnetic topological insulators with tunable exchange interaction serve as an ideal platform to realize the long-sought QAHE in pristine compounds, paving a new avenue within the area of topological materials.
