Motivated to understand the asymptotic behavior of periodically driven thermodynamic systems, we study the prototypical example of Brownian particle, overdamped and underdamped, in harmonic potentials subjected to periodic driving. The harmonic strength and the coefficients of drift and diffusion are all taken to be $T$-periodic. We obtain the asymptotic distributions almost exactly treating driving nonperturbatively. In the underdamped case, we exploit the underlying $SL_2$ symmetry to obtain the asymptotic state, and study the dynamics and fluctuations of energies and entropy. We further obtain the two-time correlation functions, and investigate the responses to drift and diffusion perturbations in the presence of driving.

The occurrence of stochastic resonance in bistable systems undergoing anomalous diffusions, which arise from density-dependent fluctuations, is investigated with emphasis on the analytical formulation of the problem as well as a possible analytical d erivation of key quantifiers of stochastic resonance. The nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing the system dynamics, together with the corresponding Ito-Langevin equation, are formulated. In the linear-response regime analytical expressions of the spectral amplification, of the signal-to-noise ratio and of the hysteresis loop area are derived as quantifiers of stochastic resonance. These quantifiers are found to be strongly dependent on the parameters controlling the type of diffusion, in particular the peak characterizing the signal-to-noise ratio occurs only in close ranges of parameters. Results introduce the relevant information that taking into consideration the interactions of anomalous diffusive systems with a periodic signal, can provide a better understanding of the physics of stochastic resonance in bistable systems driven by periodic forces.
Laser technology has developed and accelerated photo-induced nonequilibrium physics from both scientific and engineering viewpoints. The Floquet engineering, i.e., controlling material properties and functionalities by time-periodic drives, is a fore front of quantum physics of light-matter interaction, but limited to ideal dissipationless systems. For the Floquet engineering extended to a variety of materials, it is vital to understand the quantum states emerging in a balance of the periodic drive and energy dissipation. Here we derive the general description for nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) in periodically driven dissipative systems by focusing on the systems under high-frequency drive and time-independent Lindblad-type dissipation with the detailed balance condition. Our formula correctly describes the time-average, fluctuation, and symmetry property of the NESS, and can be computed efficiently in numerical calculations. Our approach will play fundamental roles in Floquet engineering in a broad class of dissipative quantum systems such as atoms and molecules, mesoscopic systems, and condensed matter.
In this paper and its sequel, we study non-equilibrium dynamics in driven 1+1D conformal field theories (CFTs) with periodic, quasi-periodic, and random driving. We study a soluble family of drives in which the Hamiltonian only involves the energy-mo mentum density spatially modulated at a single wavelength. The resulting time evolution is then captured by a Mobius coordinate transformation. In this Part I, we establish the general framework and focus on the first two classes. In periodically driven CFTs, we generalize earlier work and study the generic features of entanglement/energy evolution in different phases, i.e. the heating, non-heating phases and the phase transition between them. In quasi-periodically driven CFTs, we mainly focus on the case of driving with a Fibonacci sequence. We find that (i) the non-heating phases form a Cantor set of measure zero; (ii) in the heating phase, the Lyapunov exponents (which characterize the growth rate of the entanglement entropy and energy) exhibit self-similarity, and can be arbitrarily small; (iii) the heating phase exhibits periodicity in the location of spatial structures at the Fibonacci times; (iv) one can find exactly the non-heating fixed point, where the entanglement entropy/energy oscillate at the Fibonacci numbers, but grow logarithmically/polynomially at the non-Fibonacci numbers; (v) for certain choices of driving Hamiltonians, the non-heating phases of the Fibonacci driving CFT can be mapped to the energy spectrum of electrons propagating in a Fibonacci quasi-crystal. In addition, another quasi-periodically driven CFT with an Aubry-Andre like sequence is also studied. We compare the CFT results to lattice calculations and find remarkable agreement.
We establish some general dynamical properties of lattice many-body systems that are subject to a high-frequency periodic driving. We prove that such systems have a quasi-conserved extensive quantity $H_*$, which plays the role of an effective static Hamiltonian. The dynamics of the system (e.g., evolution of any local observable) is well-approximated by the evolution with the Hamiltonian $H_*$ up to time $tau_*$, which is exponentially long in the driving frequency. We further show that the energy absorption rate is exponentially small in the driving frequency. In cases where $H_*$ is ergodic, the driven system prethermalizes to a thermal state described by $H_*$ at intermediate times $tlesssim tau_*$, eventually heating up to an infinite-temperature state at times $tsim tau_*$. Our results indicate that rapidly driven many-body systems generically exhibit prethermalization and very slow heating. We briefly discuss implications for experiments which realize topological states by periodic driving.
Recently, it has been shown that there is a trade-off relation between thermodynamic cost and current fluctuations, referred to as the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR). The TUR has been derived for various processes, such as discrete-time Mar kov jump processes and overdamped Langevin dynamics. For underdamped dynamics, it has recently been reported that some modification is necessary for application of the TUR. In this study, we present a more generalized TUR, applicable to a system driven by a velocity-dependent force in the context of underdamped Langevin dynamics, by extending the theory of Vu and Hasegawa [preprint arXiv:1901.05715]. We show that our TUR accurately describes the trade-off properties of a molecular refrigerator (cold damping), Brownian dynamics in a magnetic field, and an active particle system.
