Machine-learning driven models have proven to be powerful tools for the identification of phases of matter. In particular, unsupervised methods hold the promise to help discover new phases of matter without the need for any prior theoretical knowledge. While for phases characterized by a broken symmetry, the use of unsupervised methods has proven to be successful, topological phases without a local order parameter seem to be much harder to identify without supervision. Here, we use an unsupervised approach to identify topological phases and transitions out of them. We train artificial neural nets to relate configurational data or measurement outcomes to quantities like temperature or tuning parameters in the Hamiltonian. The accuracy of these predictive models can then serve as an indicator for phase transitions. We successfully illustrate this approach on both the classical Ising gauge theory as well as on the quantum ground state of a generalized toric code.

As a prototype model of topological quantum memory, two-dimensional toric code is genuinely immune to generic local static perturbations, but fragile at finite temperature and also after non-equilibrium time evolution at zero temperature. We show tha t dynamical localization induced by disorder makes the time evolution a local unitary transformation at all times, which keeps topological order robust after a quantum quench. We verify this conclusion by investigating the Wilson loop expectation value and topological entanglement entropy. Our results suggest that the two dimensional topological quantum memory can be dynamically robust at zero temperature.
We consider paradigmatic quenched disordered quantum spin models, viz., the XY spin glass and random-field XY models, and show that quenched averaged quantum correlations can exhibit the order-from-disorder phenomenon for finite-size systems as well as in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, we find that the order-from-disorder can get more pronounced in the presence of temperature by suitable tuning of the system parameters. The effects are found for entanglement measures as well as for information-theoretic quantum correlation ones, although the former show them more prominently. We also observe that the equivalence between the quenched averages and their self-averaged cousins -- for classical and quantum correlations -- is related to the quantum critical point in the corresponding ordered system.

The recently discovered three dimensional or bulk topological insulators are expected to exhibit exotic quantum phenomena. It is believed that a trivial insulator can be twisted into a topological state by modulating the spin-orbit interaction or the crystal lattice via odd number of band
The measurement precision of modern quantum simulators is intrinsically constrained by the limited set of measurements that can be efficiently implemented on hardware. This fundamental limitation is particularly severe for quantum algorithms where co mplex quantum observables are to be precisely evaluated. To achieve precise estimates with current methods, prohibitively large amounts of sample statistics are required in experiments. Here, we propose to reduce the measurement overhead by integrating artificial neural networks with quantum simulation platforms. We show that unsupervised learning of single-qubit data allows the trained networks to accommodate measurements of complex observables, otherwise costly using traditional post-processing techniques. The effectiveness of this hybrid measurement protocol is demonstrated for quantum chemistry Hamiltonians using both synthetic and experimental data. Neural-network estimators attain high-precision measurements with a drastic reduction in the amount of sample statistics, without requiring additional quantum resources.
Classical correlations of ground states typically decay exponentially and polynomially, respectively for gapped and gapless short-ranged quantum spin systems. In such systems, entanglement decays exponentially even at the quantum critical points. How ever, quantum discord, an information-theoretic quantum correlation measure, survives long lattice distances. We investigate the effects of quenched disorder on quantum correlation lengths of quenched averaged entanglement and quantum discord, in the anisotropic XY and XYZ spin glass and random field chains. We find that there is virtually neither reduction nor enhancement in entanglement length while quantum discord length increases significantly with the introduction of the quenched disorder.
