We obtain new expressions for the Casimir energy between plates that are mimicked by the most general possible boundary conditions allowed by the principles of quantum field theory. This result enables to provide the quantum vacuum energy for scalar fields propagating under the influence of a one-dimensional crystal represented by a periodic potential formed by an infinite array of identical potentials with compact support.

We study the self adjoint extensions of a class of non maximal multiplication operators with boundary conditions. We show that these extensions correspond to singular rank one perturbations (in the sense of cite{AK}) of the Laplace operator, namely t he formal Laplacian with a singular delta potential, on the half space. This construction is the appropriate setting to describe the Casimir effect related to a massless scalar field in the flat space time with an infinite conducting plate and in the presence of a point like impurity. We use the relative zeta determinant (as defined in cite{Mul} and cite{SZ}) in order to regularize the partition function of this model. We study the analytic extension of the associated relative zeta function, and we present explicit results for the partition function, and for the Casimir force.
In this work we study the Casimir effect for massless scalar fields propagating in a piston geometry of the type $Itimes N$ where $I$ is an interval of the real line and $N$ is a smooth compact Riemannian manifold. Our analysis represents a generaliz ation of previous results obtained for pistons configurations as we consider all possible boundary conditions that are allowed to be imposed on the scalar fields. We employ the spectral zeta function formalism in the framework of scattering theory in order to obtain an expression for the Casimir energy and the corresponding Casimir force on the piston. We provide explicit results for the Casimir force when the manifold $N$ is a $d$-dimensional sphere and a disk.
In this paper we show that wormholes in (2+1) dimensions (3-D) cannot be sourced solely by both Casimir energy and tension, differently from what happens in a 4-D scenario, in which case it has been shown recently, by the direct computation of the ex act shape and redshift functions of a wormhole solution, that this is possible. We show that in a 3-D spacetime the same is not true since the arising of at least an event horizon is inevitable. We do the analysis for massive and massless fermions, as well as for scalar fields, considering quasi-periodic boundary conditions and find that a possibility to circumvent such a restriction is to introduce, besides the 3-D Casimir energy density and tension, a cosmological constant, embedding the surface in a 4-D manifold and applying a perpendicular weak magnetic field. This causes an additional tension on it, which contributes to the formation of the wormhole. Finally, we discuss the possibility of producing the condensed matter analogous of this wormhole in a graphene sheet and analyze the electronic transport through it.

We investigate the thermodynamic limit of the inhomogeneous T-Q relation of the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain with antiperiodic boundary condition. It is shown that the contribution of the inhomogeneous term at the ground state can be neglected wh en the system-size N tends to infinity, which enables us to reduce the inhomogeneous Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs) to the homogeneous ones. Then the quantum numbers at the ground states are obtained, by which the system with arbitrary size can be studied. We also calculate the twisted boundary energy of the system.
The Izergin-Korepin model with general non-diagonal boundary terms, a typical integrable model beyond A-type and without U(1)-symmetry, is studied via the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz method. Based on some intrinsic properties of the R-matrix and the K- matrices, certain operator product identities of the transfer matrix are obtained at some special points of the spectral parameter. These identities and the asymptotic behaviors of the transfer matrix together allow us to construct the inhomogeneous T-Q relation and the associated Bethe ansatz equations. In the diagonal boundary limit, the reduced results coincide exactly with those obtained via other methods.
