We investigate the stability of a one-parameter family of periodic solutions of the four-vortex problem known as `leapfrogging orbits. These solutions, which consist of two pairs of identical yet oppositely-signed vortices, were known to W. Grobli (1877) and A. E. H. Love (1883), and can be parameterized by a dimensionless parameter $alpha$ related to the geometry of the initial configuration. Simulations by Acheson (2000) and numerical Floquet analysis by Toph{o}j and Aref (2012) both indicate, to many digits, that the bifurcation occurs when $1/alpha=phi^2$, where $phi$ is the golden ratio. This study aims to explain the origin of this remarkable value. Using a trick from the gravitational two-body problem, we change variables to render the Floquet problem in an explicit form that is more amenable to analysis. We then implement G. W. Hills method of harmonic balance to high order using computer algebra to construct a rapidly-converging sequence of asymptotic approximations to the bifurcation value, confirming the value found earlier.

We examine the motion of rigid, ellipsoidal swimmers subjected to a steady vortex flow in two dimensions. Numerical simulations of swimmers in a spatially periodic array of vortices reveal a range of possible behaviors, including trapping inside a si ngle vortex and motility-induced diffusion across many vortices. While the trapping probability vanishes at a sufficiently high swimming speed, we find that it exhibits surprisingly large oscillations as this critical swimming speed is approached. Strikingly, at even higher swimming speeds, we find swimmers that swim perpendicular to their elongation direction can again become trapped. To explain this complex behavior, we investigate the underlying swimmer phase-space geometry. We identify the fixed points and periodic orbits of the swimmer equations of motion that regulate swimmer trapping inside a single vortex cell. For low to intermediate swimming speeds, we find that a stable periodic orbit surrounded by invariant tori forms a transport barrier to swimmers and can trap them inside individual vortices. For swimming speeds approaching the maximum fluid speed, we find instead that perpendicular swimmers can be trapped by asymptotically stable fixed points. A bifurcation analysis of the stable periodic orbit and the fixed points explains the complex and non-monotonic breakdown and reemergence of swimmer trapping as the swimmer speed and shape are varied.
Turbulent boundary layers exhibit a universal structure which nevertheless is rather complex, being composed of a viscous sub-layer, a buffer zone, and a turbulent log-law region. In this letter we present a simple analytic model of turbulent boundar y layers which culminates in explicit formulae for the profiles of the mean velocity, the kinetic energy and the Reynolds stress as a function of the distance from the wall. The resulting profiles are in close quantitative agreement with measurements over the entire structure of the boundary layer, without any need of re-fitting in the different zones.
Lagrangian techniques, such as the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) and hyperbolic Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS), have become popular tools for analyzing unsteady fluid flows. These techniques identify regions where particles transported b y a flow will converge to and diverge from over a finite-time interval, even in a divergence-free flow. Lagrangian analyses, however, are time consuming and computationally expensive, hence unsuitable for quickly assessing short-term material transport. A recently developed method called OECSs [Serra, M. and Haller, G., `Objective Eulerian Coherent Structures, Chaos 26(5), 2016] rigorously connected Eulerian quantities to short-term Lagrangian transport. This Eulerian method is faster and less expensive to compute than its Lagrangian counterparts, and needs only a single snapshot of a velocity field. Along the same line, here we define the instantaneous Lyapunov Exponent (iLE), the instantaneous counterpart of the FTLE, and connect the Taylor series expansion of the right Cauchy-Green deformation tensor to the infinitesimal integration time limit of the FTLE. We illustrate our results on geophysical fluid flows from numerical models as well as analytical flows, and demonstrate the efficacy of attracting and repelling instantaneous Lyapunov exponent structures in predicting short-term material transport.
A fluid occupying a mechanically isolated vessel with walls kept at spatially non-uniform temperature is in the long run expected to reach the spatially inhomogeneous steady state. Irrespective of the initial conditions the velocity field is expected to vanish, and the temperature field is expected to be fully determined by the steady heat equation. This simple observation is however difficult to prove using the corresponding governing equations. The main difficulties are the presence of the dissipative heating term in the evolution equation for temperature and the lack of control on the heat fluxes through the boundary. Using thermodynamically based arguments, it is shown that these difficulties in the proof can be overcome, and it is proved that the velocity and temperature perturbations to the steady state actually vanish as the time goes to infinity.

We examine the properties of a recently proposed model for antigenic variation in malaria which incorporates multiple epitopes and both long-lasting and transient immune responses. We show that in the case of a vanishing decay rate for the long-lasti ng immune response, the system exhibits the so-called bifurcations without parameters due to the existence of a hypersurface of equilibria in the phase space. When the decay rate of the long-lasting immune response is different from zero, the hypersurface of equilibria degenerates, and a multitude of other steady states are born, many of which are related by a permutation symmetry of the system. The robustness of the fully symmetric state of the system was investigated by means of numerical computation of transverse Lyapunov exponents. The results of this exercise indicate that for a vanishing decay of long-lasting immune response, the fully symmetric state is not robust in the substantial part of the parameter space, and instead all variants develop their own temporal dynamics contributing to the overall time evolution. At the same time, if the decay rate of the long-lasting immune response is increased, the fully symmetric state can become robust provided the growth rate of the long-lasting immune response is rapid.
