Models and observations indicate that the impact of matter accreting onto the surface of young stars produces regions at the base of accretion columns, in which optically thin and thick plasma components coexist. Thus an accurate description of these impacts requires to account for the effects of absorption and emission of radiation. We study the effects of radiation emerging from shock-heated plasma in impact regions on the structure of the pre-shock downfalling material. We investigate if a significant absorption of radiation occurs and if it leads to a pre-shock heating of the accreting gas. We developed a radiation hydrodynamics model describing an accretion column impacting onto the surface of a Classical T Tauri Star. The model takes into account the stellar gravity, the thermal conduction, and the effects of both radiative losses and absorption of radiation by matter in the non local thermodynamic equilibrium regime. After the impact, a hot slab of post-shock plasma develops at the base of the accretion column. Part of radiation emerging from the slab is absorbed by the pre-shock accreting material. As a result, the pre-shock accretion column gradually heats up to temperatures of $10^5$ K, forming a radiative precursor of the shock. The precursor has a thermal structure with the hottest part at $T approx 10^5$ K, with size comparable to that of the hot slab, above the post-shock region. At larger distances the temperature gradually decreases to $T approx 10^4$ K.

We report here the first results of a multi-wavelength campaign focussing on magnetospheric accretion processes of the classical TTauri star (cTTS) V2129Oph. In this paper, we present spectropolarimetric observations collected in 2009 July with ESPaD OnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). Circularly polarised Zeeman signatures are clearly detected, both in photospheric absorption and accretion-powered emission lines, from time-series of which we reconstruct new maps of the magnetic field, photospheric brightness and accretion-powered emission at the surface of V2129Oph using our newest tomographic imaging tool - to be compared with those derived from our old 2005 June data set, reanalyzed in the exact same way. We find that in 2009 July, V2129Oph hosts octupolar & dipolar field components of about 2.1 & 0.9kG respectively, both tilted by about 20deg with respect to the rotation axis; we conclude that the large-scale magnetic topology changed significantly since 2005 June (when the octupole and dipole components were about 1.5 and 3 times weaker respectively), demonstrating that the field of V2129Oph is generated by a non-stationary dynamo. We also show that V2129Oph features a dark photospheric spot and a localised area of accretion-powered emission, both close to the main surface magnetic region (hosting fields of up to about 4kG in 2009 July). We finally obtain that the surface shear of V2129Oph is about half as strong as solar. From the fluxes of accretion-powered emission lines, we estimate that the observed average logarithmic accretion rate (in Msun/yr) at the surface of V2129Oph is -9.2+-0.3 at both epochs, peaking at -9.0 at magnetic maximum. It implies in particular that the radius at which the magnetic field of V2129Oph truncates the inner accretion disc is 0.93x and 0.50x the corotation radius in 2009 July and 2005 June respectively.
We present high spectral resolution ($Rapprox108,000$) Stokes $V$ polarimetry of the Classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) GQ Lup and TW Hya obtained with the polarimetric upgrade to the HARPS spectrometer on the ESO 3.6 m telescope. We present data on bot h photospheric lines and emission lines, concentrating our discussion on the polarization properties of the ion{He}{1} emission lines at 5876 AA and 6678 AA. The ion{He}{1} lines in these CTTSs contain both narrow emission cores, believed to come from near the accretion shock region on these stars, and broad emission components which may come from either a wind or the large scale magnetospheric accretion flow. We detect strong polarization in the narrow component of the two ion{He}{1} emission lines in both stars. We observe a maximum implied field strength of $6.05 pm 0.24$ kG in the 5876 AA line of GQ Lup, making it the star with the highest field strength measured in this line for a CTTS. We find field strengths in the two ion{He}{1} lines that are consistent with each other, in contrast to what has been reported in the literature on at least one star. We do not detect any polarization in the broad component of the ion{He}{1} lines on these stars, strengthening the conclusion that they form over a substantially different volume relative the formation region of the narrow component of the ion{He}{1} lines.

We present initial result of a large spectroscopic survey aimed at measuring the timescale of mass accretion in young, pre-main-sequence stars in the spectral type range K0 - M5. Using multi-object spectroscopy with VIMOS at the VLT we identified the fraction of accreting stars in a number of young stellar clusters and associations of ages between 1 - 50 Myr. The fraction of accreting stars decreases from ~60% at 1.5 - 2 Myr to ~2% at 10 Myr. No accreting stars are found after 10 Myr at a sensitivity limit of $10^{-11}$ Msun yr-1. We compared the fraction of stars showing ongoing accretion (f_acc) to the fraction of stars with near-to-mid infrared excess (f_IRAC). In most cases we find f_acc < f_IRAC, i.e., mass accretion appears to cease (or drop below detectable level) earlier than the dust is dissipated in the inner disk. At 5 Myr, 95% of the stellar population has stopped accreting material at a rate of > 10^{-11} Msun yr-1, while ~20% of the stars show near-infrared excess emission. Assuming an exponential decay, we measure a mass accretion timescale (t_acc) of 2.3 Myr, compared to a near-to-mid infrared excess timescale (t_IRAC) of 2.9 Myr. Planet formation, and/or migration, in the inner disk might be a viable mechanism to halt further accretion onto the central star on such a short timescale.

From observations collected with the ESPaDOnS & NARVAL spectropolarimeters at CFHT and TBL, we report the detection of Zeeman signatures on the prototypical classical TTauri star AATau, both in photospheric lines and accretion-powered emission lines. Using time series of unpolarized and circularly polarized spectra, we reconstruct at two epochs maps of the magnetic field, surface brightness and accretion-powered emission of AATau. We find that AATau hosts a 2-3kG magnetic dipole tilted at ~20deg to the rotation axis, and of presumably dynamo origin. We also show that the magnetic poles of AATau host large cool spots at photospheric level and accretion regions at chromospheric level. The logarithmic accretion rate at the surface of AATau at the time of our observations is strongly variable, ranging from -9.6 to -8.5 and equal to -9.2 in average (in Msun/yr); this is an order of magnitude smaller than the disc accretion rate at which the magnetic truncation radius (below which the disc is disrupted by the stellar magnetic field) matches the corotation radius (where the Keplerian period equals the stellar rotation period) - a necessary condition for accretion to occur. It suggests that AATau is largely in the propeller regime, with most of the accreting material in the inner disc regions being expelled outwards and only a small fraction accreted towards the surface of the star. The strong variability in the observed surface mass-accretion rate and the systematic time-lag of optical occultations (by the warped accretion disc) with respect to magnetic and accretion-powered emission maxima also support this conclusion. Our results imply that AATau is being actively spun-down by the star-disc magnetic coupling and appears as an ideal laboratory for studying angular momentum losses of forming Suns in the propeller regime.

We present the results of a variability study of accreting young stellar objects in the Chameleon I star-forming region which is based on ~300 high resolution optical spectra from the multi-object fibre spectrograph FLAMES/GIRAFFE at the ESO/VLT. Twe nty five objects with spectral types from G2-M5.75 were observed 12 times over the course of 15 months. Using the emission lines Ha (6562.81 A) and Ca II (8662.1 A) as accretion indicators we found 10 accreting and 15 non-accreting objects. We derived accretion rates for all accretors in the sample using the Ha equivalent width, Ha 10% width and the CaII equivalent width. The mean amplitude of variations in derived accretion rate from Ha equivalent width was ~ 0.37 dex, from Ca II equivalent width ~0.83 dex and from Ha 10% width ~1.11 dex. Based on the large amplitude of variations in accretion rates derived from the Ha 10% width with respect to the other diagnostics, we do not consider it to be a reliable accretion rate estimator. Taking the variations in Ha equivalent width and CaII equivalent width accretion rates to be closer to the true value, they suggest that the spread which has been found around the accretion rate to stellar mass relation is not due to the variability of individual objects on time-scales of weeks to ~1 year. From these variations we can also infer that the accretion rates are stable within < 0.37 dex over time-scales of less than 15 months. A major portion of the accretion variability was found to occur on less than the shortest time-scales in our observations, 8-25 days, which is comparable with the rotation periods of these young stellar objects. This could be an indication that what we are probing is spatial structure in the accretion flows, and also suggests that observations on time-scales of ~a couple of weeks are sufficient to limit the total extent of accretion rate variations in typical young stars.
