Precise shaping of coherent electron sources allows the controlled creation of wavepackets into a one dimensional (1D) quantum conductor. Periodic trains of Lorentzian pulses have been shown to induce minimal excitations without creating additional electron-hole pairs in a single non-interacting 1D electron channel. The presence of electron-electron (e-e) interactions dramatically affects the non-equilibrium dynamics of a 1D system. Here, we consider the intrinsic spectral properties of a helical liquid, with a pair of counterpropagating interacting channels, in the presence of time-dependent Lorentzian voltage pulses. We show that peculiar asymmetries in the behavior of the spectral function are induced by interactions, depending on the sign of the injected charges. Moreover, we discuss the robustness of the concept of minimal excitations in the presence of interactions, where the link with excess noise is no more straightforward. Finally, we propose a scanning tunneling microscope setup to spectroscopically access and probe the non-equilibrium behavior induced by the voltage drive and e-e interactions. This allows a diagnosis of fractional charges in a correlated quantum spin Hall liquid in the presence of time-dependent drives.

We investigate the spectral properties of one-dimensional lattices with position-dependent hopping amplitudes and on-site potentials that are smooth bounded functions of position. We find an exact integral form for the density of states (DOS) in the limit of an infinite number of sites, which we derive using a mixed Bloch-Wannier basis consisting of piecewise Wannier functions. Next, we provide an exact solution for the inverse problem of constructing the position-dependence of hopping in a lattice model yielding a given DOS. We confirm analytic results by comparing them to numerics obtained by exact diagonalization for various incarnations of position-dependent hoppings and on-site potentials. Finally, we generalize the DOS integral form to multi-orbital tight-binding models with longer-range hoppings and in higher dimensions.
We study charge transport in a graphene zigzag nanoribbon driven by an external time-periodic kicking potential. Using the exact solution of the time-dependent Dirac equation with a delta-kick potential acting in each period, we study the time evolut ion of the quasienergy levels and the time-dependent optical conductivity. By variation of the kicking parameters, the conductivity becomes widely tunable.
We study backscattering of electrons and conductance suppression in a helical edge channel in two-dimensional topological insulators with broken axial spin symmetry in the presence of nonmagnetic point defects that create bound states. In this system the tunneling coupling of the edge and bound states results in the formation of composite helical edge states in which all four partners of both Kramers pairs of the conventional helical edge states and bound states are mixed. The backscattering is considered as a result of inelastic two-particle scattering of electrons, which are in these composite states. Within this approach we find that sufficiently strong backscattering occurs even if the defect creates only one energy level. The effect is caused by electron transitions between the composite states with energy near the bound state level. We study the deviation from the quantized conductance due to scattering by a single defect as a function of temperature and Fermi level. The results are generalized to the case of scattering by many different defects with energy levels distributed over the band gap. In this case, the conductance deviation turns out to be quite strong and comparable with experiment even at a sufficiently low density of defects. Interestingly, under certain conditions, the temperature dependence of the conductance deviation becomes very weak over a wide temperature range.
We present a time-resolved study of the magnetization dynamics in a microstructured Cr$|$Heusler$|$Pt waveguide driven by the Spin-Hall-Effect and the Spin-Transfer-Torque effect via short current pulses. In particular, we focus on the determination of the threshold current at which the spin-wave damping is compensated. We have developed a novel method based on the temporal evolution of the magnon density at the beginning of an applied current pulse at which the magnon density deviates from the thermal level. Since this method does not depend on the signal-to-noise ratio, it allows for a robust and reliable determination of the threshold current which is important for the characterization of any future application based on the Spin-Transfer-Torque effect.

We calculate current, spin current and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) for a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads in the presence of a square wave of bias voltage. Our results are obtained via time-dependent nonequilibrium Green function. Both p arallel and antiparallel lead magnetization alignments are considered. The main findings include a wave of spin accumulation and spin current that can change sign as the time evolves, spikes in the TMR signal and a TMR sign change due to an ultrafast switch from forward to reverse current in the emitter lead.
