Humans excel at grasping objects and manipulating them. Capturing human grasps is important for understanding grasping behavior and reconstructing it realistically in Virtual Reality (VR). However, grasp capture - capturing the pose of a hand grasping an object, and orienting it w.r.t. the object - is difficult because of the complexity and diversity of the human hand, and occlusion. Reflective markers and magnetic trackers traditionally used to mitigate this difficulty introduce undesirable artifacts in images and can interfere with natural grasping behavior. We present preliminary work on a completely marker-less algorithm for grasp capture from a video depicting a grasp. We show how recent advances in 2D hand pose estimation can be used with well-established optimization techniques. Uniquely, our algorithm can also capture hand-object contact in detail and integrate it in the grasp capture process. This is work in progress, find more details at https://contactdb. cc.gatech.edu/grasp_capture.html.

Aiming at automatic, convenient and non-instrusive motion capture, this paper presents a new generation markerless motion capture technique, the FlyCap system, to capture surface motions of moving characters using multiple autonomous flying cameras ( autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) each integrated with an RGBD video camera). During data capture, three cooperative flying cameras automatically track and follow the moving target who performs large scale motions in a wide space. We propose a novel non-rigid surface registration method to track and fuse the depth of the three flying cameras for surface motion tracking of the moving target, and simultaneously calculate the pose of each flying camera. We leverage the using of visual-odometry information provided by the UAV platform, and formulate the surface tracking problem in a non-linear objective function that can be linearized and effectively minimized through a Gaussian-Newton method. Quantitative and qualitative experimental results demonstrate the competent and plausible surface and motion reconstruction results
Leveraging human grasping skills to teach a robot to perform a manipulation task is appealing, but there are several limitations to this approach: time-inefficient data capture procedures, limited generalization of the data to other grasps and object s, and inability to use that data to learn more about how humans perform and evaluate grasps. This paper presents a data capture protocol that partially addresses these deficiencies by asking participants to specify ranges over which a grasp is valid. The protocol is verified both qualitatively through online survey questions (where 95.38% of within-range grasps are identified correctly with the nearest extreme grasp) and quantitatively by showing that there is small variation in grasps ranges from different participants as measured by joint angles, contact points, and position. We demonstrate that these grasp ranges are valid through testing on a physical robot (93.75% of grasps interpolated from grasp ranges are successful).
We present a method to capture temporally coherent dynamic clothing deformation from a monocular RGB video input. In contrast to the existing literature, our method does not require a pre-scanned personalized mesh template, and thus can be applied to in-the-wild videos. To constrain the output to a valid deformation space, we build statistical deformation models for three types of clothing: T-shirt, short pants and long pants. A differentiable renderer is utilized to align our captured shapes to the input frames by minimizing the difference in both silhouette, segmentation, and texture. We develop a UV texture growing method which expands the visible texture region of the clothing sequentially in order to minimize drift in deformation tracking. We also extract fine-grained wrinkle detail from the input videos by fitting the clothed surface to the normal maps estimated by a convolutional neural network. Our method produces temporally coherent reconstruction of body and clothing from monocular video. We demonstrate successful clothing capture results from a variety of challenging videos. Extensive quantitative experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on metrics including body pose error and surface reconstruction error of the clothing.
After a grasp has been planned, if the object orientation changes, the initial grasp may but not always have to be modified to accommodate the orientation change. For example, rotation of a cylinder by any amount around its centerline does not change its geometric shape relative to the grasper. Objects that can be approximated to solids of revolution or contain other geometric symmetries are prevalent in everyday life, and this information can be employed to improve the efficiency of existing grasp planning models. This paper experimentally investigates change in human-planned grasps under varied object orientations. With 13,440 recorded human grasps, our results indicate that during pick-and-place task of ordinary objects, stable grasps can be achieved with a small subset of grasp types, and the wrist-related parameters follow normal distribution. Furthermore, we show this knowledge can allow faster convergence of grasp planning algorithm.
In this work, we address a challenging problem of fine-grained and coarse-grained recognition of object manipulation actions. Due to the variations in geometrical and motion constraints, there are different manipulations actions possible to perform d ifferent sets of actions with an object. Also, there are subtle movements involved to complete most of object manipulation actions. This makes the task of object manipulation action recognition difficult with only just the motion information. We propose to use grasp and motion-constraints information to recognise and understand action intention with different objects. We also provide an extensive experimental evaluation on the recent Yale Human Grasping dataset consisting of large set of 455 manipulation actions. The evaluation involves a) Different contemporary multi-class classifiers, and binary classifiers with one-vs-one multi- class voting scheme, b) Differential comparisons results based on subsets of attributes involving information of grasp and motion-constraints, c) Fine-grained and Coarse-grained object manipulation action recognition based on fine-grained as well as coarse-grained grasp type information, and d) Comparison between Instance level and Sequence level modeling of object manipulation actions. Our results justifies the efficacy of grasp attributes for the task of fine-grained and coarse-grained object manipulation action recognition.
