Sum rules connecting low-energy observables to high-energy physics are an interesting way to probe the mechanism of inflation and its ultraviolet origin. Unfortunately, such sum rules have proven difficult to study in a cosmological setting. Motivated by this problem, we investigate a precise analogue of inflation in anti-de Sitter spacetime, where it becomes dual to a slow renormalization group flow in the boundary quantum field theory. This dual description provides a firm footing for exploring the constraints of unitarity, analyticity, and causality on the bulk effective field theory. We derive a sum rule that constrains the bulk coupling constants in this theory. In the bulk, the sum rule is related to the speed of radial propagation, while on the boundary, it governs the spreading of nonlocal operators. When the spreading speed approaches the speed of light, the sum rule is saturated, suggesting that the theory becomes free in this limit. We also discuss whether similar results apply to inflation, where an analogous sum rule exists for the propagation speed of inflationary fluctuations.

These lectures cover aspects of primordial cosmology with a focus on observational tests of physics beyond the Standard Model. The presentation is divided into two parts: In Part I, we study the production of new light particles in the hot big bang a nd describe their effects on the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background. In Part II, we investigate the possibility of very massive particles being created during inflation and determine their imprints in higher-order cosmological correlations.
Holographic RG flows dual to QFTs on maximally symmetric curved manifolds (dS$_d$, AdS$_d$, and $S^d$) are considered in the framework of Einstein-dilaton gravity in $d+1$ dimensions. A general dilaton potential is used and the flows are driven by a scalar relevant operator. The general properties of such flows are analyzed and the UV and IR asymptotics computed. New RG flows can appear at finite curvature which do not have a zero curvature counterpart. The so-called bouncing flows, where the $beta$-function has a branch cut at which it changes sign, are found to persist at finite curvature. Novel quantum first-order phase transitions are found, triggered by a variation in the $d$-dimensional curvature in theories allowing multiple ground states.
We study $F$-functions in the context of field theories on $S^3$ using gauge-gravity duality, with the radius of $S^3$ playing the role of RG scale. We show that the on-shell action, evaluated over a set of holographic RG flow solutions, can be used to define good $F$-functions, which decrease monotonically along the RG flow from the UV to the IR for a wide range of examples. If the operator perturbing the UV CFT has dimension $Delta > 3/2$ these $F$-functions correspond to an appropriately renormalized free energy. If instead the perturbing operator has dimension $Delta < 3/2$ it is the quantum effective potential, i.e. the Legendre transform of the free energy, which gives rise to good $F$-functions. We check that these observations hold beyond holography for the case of a free fermion on $S^3$ ($Delta=2$) and the free boson on $S^3$ ($Delta=1$), resolving a long-standing problem regarding the non-monotonicity of the free energy for the free massive scalar. We also show that for a particular choice of entangling surface, we can define good $F$-functions from an entanglement entropy, which coincide with certain $F$-functions obtained from the on-shell action.
We study the $qbar{q}$ potential in strongly coupled non-conformal field theories with a non-trivial renormalization group flow via holography. We focus on the properties of this potential at an inter-quark separation $L$ large compared to the charac teristic scale of the field theory. These are determined by the leading order IR physics plus a series of corrections, sensitive to the properties of the RG-flow. To determine those corrections, we propose a general method applying holographic Wilsonian renormalization to a dual string. We apply this method to examine in detail two sets of examples, $3+1$-dimensional theories with an RG flow ending in an IR fixed point; and theories that are confining in the IR, in particular, the Witten QCD and Klebanov-Strassler models. In both cases, we find corrections with a universal dependence on the inter-quark separation. When there is an IR fixed point, that correction decays as a power $sim 1/L^4$. We explain that dependence in terms of a double-trace deformation in a one-dimensional defect theory. For a confining theory, the decay is exponential $sim e^{-ML}$, with $M$ a scale of the order of the glueball mass. We interpret this correction using an effective flux tube description as produced by a background internal mode excitation induced by sources localized at the endpoints of the flux tube. We discuss how these results could be confronted with lattice QCD data to test whether the description of confinement via the gauge/gravity is qualitatively correct.

We find exact static stringy solutions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with the projectability condition but imposing the detailed balance condition near the UV fixed point, and propose a method on constraining the possible pattern of flows in Horava-Lifs hitz gravity by using the obtained classical solutions. In the obtained vacuum solutions, the parameters related to the speed of the graviton and the coefficients of quartic spatial derivative terms lead to intriguing effects: the change of graviton speed yields a surplus angle and the quartic derivatives make the square of effective electric charge negative. The result of a few tests based on the geometries of a cone, an excess cone, a black string, and a charged (black) string seems suggestive. For example, the flow of constant graviton speed and variable Newtons coupling can be favored in the vicinity of IR fixed point, but the conclusion is indistinct and far from definite yet. Together with the numerous classical solutions, static or time-dependent, which have already been found, the accumulated data from various future tests will give some hints in constraining the flow patterns more deterministic.
