In this work, we analyze the flow filtration process of slightly compressible fluids in porous media containing man made fractures with complex geometries. We model the coupled fracture-porous media system where the linear Darcy flow is considered in porous media and the nonlinear Forchheimer equation is used inside the fracture. We develop a model to examine the flow inside fractures with complex geometries and variable thickness, on a Riemannian manifold. The fracture is represented as the normal variation of a surface immersed in $mathbb{R}^3$. Using operators of Laplace Beltrami type and geometric identities, we model an equation that describes the flow in the fracture. A reduced model is obtained as a low dimensional BVP. We then couple the model with the porous media. Theoretical and numerical analysis have been performed to compare the solutions between the original geometric model and the reduced model in reservoirs containing fractures with complex geometries. We prove that the two solutions are close, and therefore, the reduced model can be effectively used in large scale simulators for long and thin fractures with complicated geometry.

In porous media, there are three known regimes of fluid flows, namely, pre-Darcy, Darcy and post-Darcy. Because of their different natures, these are usually treated separately in literature. To study complex flows when all three regimes may be prese nt in different portions of a same domain, we use a single equation of motion to unify them. Several scenarios and models are then considered for slightly compressible fluids. A nonlinear parabolic equation for the pressure is derived, which is degenerate when the pressure gradient is either small or large. We estimate the pressure and its gradient for all time in terms of initial and boundary data. We also obtain their particular bounds for large time which depend on the asymptotic behavior of the boundary data but not on the initial one. Moreover, the continuous dependence of the solutions on initial and boundary data, and the structural stability for the equation are established.
Many applications of porous media research involves high pressures and, correspondingly, exchange of thermal energy between the fluid and the matrix. While the system is relatively well understood for the case of non-moving porous media, the situatio n when the elastic matrix can move and deform, is much more complex. In this paper we derive the equations of motion for the dynamics of a deformable porous media which includes the effects of friction forces, stresses, and heat exchanges between the media, by using the new methodology of variational approach to thermodynamics. This theory extends the recently developed variational derivation of the mechanics of deformable porous media to include thermodynamic processes and can easily include incompressibility constraints. The model for the combined fluid-matrix system, written in the spatial frame, is developed by introducing mechanical and additional variables describing the thermal energy part of the system, writing the action principle for the system, and using a nonlinear, nonholonomic constraint on the system deduced from the second law of thermodynamics. The resulting equations give us the general version of possible friction forces incorporating thermodynamics, Darcy-like forces and friction forces similar to those used in the Navier-Stokes equations. The equations of motion are valid for arbitrary dependence of the kinetic and potential energies on the state variables. The results of our work are relevant for geophysical applications, industrial applications involving high pressures and temperatures, food processing industry, and other situations when both thermodynamics and mechanical considerations are important.

We construct examples of solutions to the incompressible porous media (IPM) equation that must exhibit infinite in time growth of derivatives provided they remain smooth. As an application, this allows us to obtain nonlinear instability for a class of stratified steady states of IPM.
We perform Brownian dynamics simulations of active stiff polymers undergoing run-reverse dynamics, and so mimic bacterial swimming, in porous media. In accord with recent experiments of emph{Escherichia coli}, the polymer dynamics are characterized b y trapping phases interrupted by directed hopping motion through the pores. We find that the effective translational diffusivities of run-reverse agents can be enhanced up to two orders in magnitude, compared to their non-reversing counterparts, and exhibit a non-monotonic behavior as a function of the reversal rate, which we rationalize using a coarse-grained model. Furthermore, we discover a geometric criterion for the optimal spreading, which emerges when their run lengths are comparable to the longest straight path available in the porous medium. More significantly, our criterion unifies results for porous media with disparate pore sizes and shapes and thus provides a fundamental principle for optimal transport of microorganisms and cargo-carriers in densely-packed biological and environmental settings.

A nonlinear PDE featuring flux limitation effects together with those of the porous media equation (nonlinear Fokker-Planck) is presented in this paper. We analyze the balance of such diverse effects through the study of the existence and qualitative behavior of some admissible patterns, namely traveling wave solutions, to this singular reaction-difusion equation. We show the existence and qualitative behavior of different types of traveling waves: classical profiles for wave speeds high enough, and discontinuous waves that are reminiscent of hyperbolic shock waves when the wave speed lowers below a certain threshold. Some of these solutions are of particular relevance as they provide models by which the whole solution (and not just the bulk of it, as it is the case with classical traveling waves) spreads through the medium with finite speed.
