We report theoretical studies of adiabatic population transfer using dressed spin states. Quantum optimal control using the algorithm of Chopped Random Basis (CRAB) has been implemented in a negatively charged diamond nitrogen vacancy center that is coupled to a strong and resonant microwave field. We show that the dressed spin states are highly effective in suppressing effects of spin dephasing on adiabatic population transfer. The numerical simulation also demonstrates that CRAB-based quantum optimal control can enable an efficient and robust adiabatic population transfer.

Increasing fidelity is the ultimate challenge of quantum information technology. In addition to decoherence and dissipation, fidelity is affected by internal imperfections such as impurities in the system. Here we show that the quality of quantum rev ival, i.e., periodic recurrence in the time evolution, can be restored almost completely by coupling the distorted system to an external field obtained from quantum optimal control theory. We demonstrate the procedure with wave-packet calculations in both one- and two-dimensional quantum wells, and analyze the required physical characteristics of the control field. Our results generally show that the inherent dynamics of a quantum system can be idealized at an extremely low cost.
Versatile nanoscale sensors that are susceptible to changes in a variety of physical quantities often exhibit limited selectivity. We propose a novel scheme based on microwave-dressed spin states for optically probed nanoscale temperature detection u sing diamond quantum sensors, which provides selective sensitivity to temperature changes. By combining this scheme with a continuous pump-probe scheme using ensemble nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds, we demonstrate a sub-100-nanosecond temporal resolution with thermal sensitivity of 3.7 K$cdot$Hz$^{-1/2}$ that is insensitive to variations in external magnetic fields on the order of 2 G. The presented results are favorable for the practical application of time-resolved nanoscale quantum sensing, where temperature imaging is required under fluctuating magnetic fields.
Hybrid molecular-plasmonic nanostructures have demonstrated their potential for surface enhanced spectroscopies, sensing or quantum control at the nanoscale. In this work, we investigate the strong coupling regime and explicitly describe the hybridiz ation between the localized plasmons of a metal nanoparticle and the excited state of a quantum emitter, offering a simple and precise understanding of the energy exchange in full analogy with cavity quantum electrodynamics treatment and dressed atom picture. Both near field emission and far field radiation are discussed, revealing the richness of such optical nanosources.
Precise control of quantum systems is of fundamental importance for quantum device engineering, such as is needed in the fields of quantum information processing, high-resolution spectroscopy and quantum metrology. When scaling up the quantum registe rs in such devices, several challenges arise: individual addressing of qubits in a dense spectrum while suppressing crosstalk, creation of entanglement between distant nodes, and decoupling from unwanted interactions. The experimental implementation of optimal control is a prerequisite to meeting these challenges. Using engineered microwave pulses, we experimentally demonstrate optimal control of a prototype solid state spin qubit system comprising thirty six energy levels. The spin qubits are associated with proximal nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We demonstrate precise single-electron spin qubit operations with an unprecedented fidelity F approx 0.99 in combination with high-efficiency storage of electron spin states in a nuclear spin quantum memory. Matching single-electron spin operations with spin-echo techniques, we further realize high-quality entangled states (F > 0.82) between two electron spins on demand. After exploiting optimal control, the fidelity is mostly limited by the coherence time and imperfect initialization. Errors from crosstalk in a crowded spectrum of 8 lines as well as detrimental effects from active dipolar couplings have been simultaneously eliminated to unprecedented extent. Finally, by entanglement swapping to nuclear spins, nuclear spin entanglement over a length scale of 25 nm is demonstrated. This experiment underlines the importance of optimal control for scalable room temperature spin-based quantum information devices.
We theoretically investigate electron spin operations driven by applied electric fields in a semiconductor double quantum dot (DQD). Our model describes a DQD formed in semiconductor nanowire with longitudinal potential modulated by local gating. The eigenstates for two electron occupation, including spin-orbit interaction, are calculated and then used to construct a model for the charge transport cycle in the DQD taking into account the spatial dependence and spin mixing of states. The dynamics of the system is simulated aiming at implementing protocols for qubit operations, that is, controlled transitions between the singlet and triplet states. In order to obtain fast spin manipulation, the dynamics is carried out taking advantage of the anticrossings of energy levels introduced by the spin-orbit and interdot couplings. The theory of optimal quantum control is invoked to find the specific electric-field driving that performs qubit logical operations. We demonstrate that it is possible to perform within high efficiency a universal set of quantum gates ${$CNOT, H$otimes$I, I$otimes$H, T$otimes$I, and T$otimes$I$}$, where H is the Hadamard gate, T is the $pi/8$ gate, and I is the identity, even in the presence of a fast charge transport cycle and charge noise effects.
