The interplay between dimensionality and anisotropicity leads to intriguing optoelectronic properties and exciton dynamics in low dimensional semiconductors. In this study we use nanostructured phosphorene as a prototypical example to unfold such complex physics and develop a general first-principles framework to study exciton dynamics in low dimensional systems. Specifically we derived the radiative lifetime and light emission intensity from 2D to 0D systems based on many-body perturbation theory, and investigated the dimensionality and anisotropicity effects on radiative recombination lifetime both at 0 K and finite temperature, as well as polarization and angle dependence of emitted light. We show that the radiative lifetime at 0 K increases by an order of $10^3$ with the lowering of one dimension (i.e. from 2D to 1D nanoribbons or from 1D to 0D quantum dots). We also show that obtaining the radiative lifetime at finite temperature requires accurate exciton dispersion beyond the effective mass approximation. Finally, we demonstrate that monolayer phosphorene and its nanostructures always emit linearly polarized light consistent with experimental observations, different from in-plane isotropic 2D materials like MoS2 and h-BN that can emit light with arbitrary polarization, which may have important implications for quantum information applications.

Recently, phosphorene electronic and optoelectronic prototype devices have been fabricated with various metal electrodes. We systematically explore for the first time the contact properties of monolayer (ML) phosphorene with a series of commonly used metals (Al, Ag. Cu, Au, Cr, Ni, Ti, and Pd) via both ab initio electronic structure calculations and more reliable quantum transport simulations. Strong interactions are found between all the checked metals, with the energy band structure of ML phosphorene destroyed. In terms of the quantum transport simulations, ML phosphorene forms a n-type Schottky contact with Au, Cu, Cr, Al, and Ag electrodes, with electron Schottky barrier heights (SBHs) of 0.30, 0.34, 0.37, 0.51, and 0.52 eV, respectively, and p-type Schottky contact with Ti, Ni, and Pd electrodes, with hole SBHs of 0.30, 0.26, and 0.16 eV, respectively. These results are in good agreement with available experimental data. Our findings not only provide an insight into the ML phosphorene-metal interfaces but also help in ML phosphorene based device design.
The magneto-transport properties of phosphorene are investigated by employing the generalized tight-binding model to calculate the energy bands. For bilayer phosphorene, a composite magnetic and electric field is shown to induce a feature-rich Landau level (LL) spectrum which includes two subgroups of low-lying LLs. The two subgroups possess distinct features in level spacings, quantum numbers, as well as field dependencies. These together lead to anomalous quantum Hall (QH) conductivities which include a well-shape, staircase and composite quantum structures with steps having varying heights and widths. The Fermi energy-magnetic field-Hall conductivity ($E_{F}-B_{z}-sigma_{xy}$) and Fermi energy-electric field-Hall conductivity ($E_{F}-E_{z}-sigma_{xy}$) phase diagrams clearly exhibit oscillatory behaviors and cross-over from integer to half-integer QH effect. The predicted results should be verifiable by magneto-transport measurements in a dual-gated system.

Group theory analysis for two-dimensional elemental systems related to phosphorene is presented, including (i) graphene, silicene, germanene and stanene, (ii) dependence on the number of layers and (iii) two stacking arrangements. Departing from the most symmetric $D_{6h}^{1}$ graphene space group, the structures are found to have a group-subgroup relation, and analysis of the irreducible representations of their lattice vibrations makes it possible to distinguish between the different allotropes. The analysis can be used to study the effect of strain, to understand structural phase transitions, to characterize the number of layers, crystallographic orientation and nonlinear phenomena.

We present and discuss an original method to synthesize disordered Nanostructured (NS) VO$_x$ films with controlled stoichiometry and tunable electronic structures. In these NS films, the original lattice symmetry of the bulk vanadium oxides is broke n and atoms are arranged in a highly disordered structure . The stoichiometry-dependent disorder as a function of the oxygen concentration has been characterized by in-situ X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy identifying the spectroscopic fingerprints. Results show structural rearrangements that deviate from the octahedral symmetry with different coexisting disordered phases. The modulation of the electronic structure of the NS films based on the resulted stoichiometry and the quantum confinement in the NS particles are also discussed. We demonstrate the possibility to modulate the electronic structure of VO$_x$ NS films accessing new disordered atomic configurations with a controlled stoichiometry that provides an extraordinary opportunity to match a wide number of technological applications.

The capacity and stability of constituent electrodes determine the performance of Li-ion batteries. In this study, density functional theory is employed to explore the potential application of recently synthesized two dimensional phosphorene as elect rode materials. Our results show that Li atoms can bind strongly with phosphorene monolayer and double layer with significant electron transfer. Besides, the structure of phosphorene is not much influenced by lithiation and the volume change is only 0.2%. A semiconducting to metallic transition is observed after lithiation. The diffusion barrier is calculated to 0.76 and 0.72 eV on monolayer and double layer phosphorene. The theoretical specific capacity of phosphorene monolayer is 432.79 mAh/g, which is larger than other commercial anodes materials. Our findings show that the high capacity, low open circuit voltage, small volume change and electrical conductivity of phosphorene make it a good candidate as electrode material.
