Bulk studies have revealed a first-order valence phase transition in Ba$_2$PrRu$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$O$_6$ ($0.10 le x le 0.25$), which is absent in the parent compounds with $x = 0$ (Pr$^{3+}$) and $x =1$ (Pr$^{4+}$), which exhibit antiferromagnetic order with transition temperatures $T_{rm N} = 120$ and 72 K, respectively. In the present study, we have used magnetization, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and x-ray absorption measurements to investigate the nature of the Pr ion in $x =0.1$. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of $x =0.1$ show a clear sign of the first order valence phase transition below 175 K, where the Pr valence changes from 3+ to 4+. Neutron diffraction analysis reveals that $x =0.1$ crystallizes in a monoclinic structure with space group $P2_1/n$ at 300 K, but below 175 K two phases coexist, the monoclinic having the Pr ion in a 3+ valence state and a cubic one ($Fmoverline{3}m$) having the Pr ion in a 4+ valence state. Clear evidence of an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Pr and Ru moments is found in the monoclinic phase of the $x = 0.1$ compound below 110 K in the neutron diffraction measurements. Meanwhile the cubic phase remains paramagnetic down to 2 K, a temperature below which heat capacity and susceptibility measurements reveal a ferromagnetic ordering. High energy inelastic neutron scattering data reveal well-defined high-energy magnetic excitations near 264 meV at temperatures below the valence transition. The high energy excitations are assigned to the Pr$^{4+}$ ions in the cubic phase and the low energy excitations to the Pr$^{3+}$ ions in the monoclinic phase. Further direct evidence of the Pr valence transition has been obtained from the x-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Mixed-valence phenomena occurring in the black (B) and gold (G) phases of Sm1-x Yx S have been studied by x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and inelastic neutron scattering. Lattice-constant and phonon-dispersion results confirm that the valence instability occurs already inside the B phase. On the other hand, pronounced temperature anomalies in the thermal expansion alpha(T), as well as in the Sm mean-square displacements denote the onset of the B-G transition for the compositions x = 0.33 and 0.45. It is argued that these anomalies primarily denote an effect of electron-phonon coupling. The magnetic spectral response, measured on both powder and single crystals, is dominated by the Sm2+ spin-orbit component close to 36 meV. A strongly overdamped Sm3+ contribution appears only for x >= 0.33 near room-temperature. The quasielastic signal is strongly suppressed below 70 K, reflecting the formation of the singlet mixed-valence ground state. Quite remarkably, the signal around 36 meV is found, from the single-crystal spectra, to arise from two distinct, dispersive, interacting branches. The lower peak, confirmed to exist from x = 0.17 to x = 0.33 at least, is tentatively ascribed to an excitation specific to the mixed-valence regime, reminiscent of the exciton peak reported previously for SmB6 .
The magnetic ground state of double perovskite Sr2DyRuO6 has been investigated using muon spin rotation and relaxation (muSR), neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS), in addition to heat capacity and magnetic suscepti bility (ac and dc) measurements. A clear signature of a long-range ordered magnetic ground state has been observed in the heat capacity data, which exhibit two sharp anomalies at 39.5 and 36 K found as well in the magnetic data. Further confirmation of long-range magnetic ordering comes from a sharp drop in the muon initial asymmetry and a peak in the relaxation rate at 40 K, along with a weak anomaly near 36 K. Based on temperature dependent NPD, the low temperature magnetic structure contains two interpenetrating lattices of Dy and Ru5, forming an antiferromagnetic ground state below 39.5 K with magnetic propagation vector k = (0,0,0). The magnetic moments of Dy and Ru at 3.5 K are pointing along the crystallographic b-axis with values of muDy = 4.92(10) muB and muRu = 1.94(7) muB, respectively. The temperature dependence of the Ru moments follows a mean field type behaviour, while that of the Dy moments exhibits a deviation indicating that the primary magnetic ordering is induced by the order of the 4d electrons of Ru rather than that of its proper 4f Dy electrons. The origin of the second anomaly observed in the heat capacity data at 36.5 K must be connected to a very small spin reorientation as the NPD studies do not reveal any clear change in the observed magnetic Bragg peaks positions or intensities between these two transitions. INS measurements reveal the presence of crystal field excitations (CEF) in the paramagnetic state with overall CEF splitting of 73.8 meV, in agreement with the point change model calculations.
The pressure-induced structural phase transition in the intermediate-valence compound CeNi has been investigated by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques. For the first time it is shown that the structure of the pressure-induced CeNi phase (phases) can be described in terms of the Pnma space group. Equations of state for CeNi on both sides of the phase transition are derived and an approximate P-T phase diagram is suggested for P < 8 GPa and T < 300 K. The observed Cmcm -> Pnma structural transition is analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which successfully reproduce the ground state volume, the phase transition pressure, and the volume collapse associated with the phase transition.
Nd2Hf2O7, belonging to the family of geometrically frustrated cubic rare earth pyrochlore oxides, was recently identified to order antiferromagnetically below T_N = 0.55 K with an all-in/all-out arrangement of Nd3+ moments, however with a much reduce d ordered state moment. Herein we investigate the spin dynamics and crystal field states of Nd2Hf2O7 using muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Our muSR study confirms the long range magnetic ordering and shows evidence for coexisting persistent dynamic spin fluctuations deep inside the ordered state down to 42 mK. The INS data show the crytal electric field (CEF) excitations due to the transitions both within the ground state multiplet and to the first excited state multiplet. The INS data are analyzed by a model based on CEF and crystal field states are determined. Strong Ising-type anisotropy is inferred from the ground state wavefunction. The CEF parameters indicate the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Nd3+ to be consistent with the dipolar-octupolar character.

A theoretical investigation of a plausible construct for electronic structure in iridate perovskites demonstrates the existence of magnetic multipoles hitherto not identified. The strange multipoles, which are parity-even, time-odd and even rank tens ors, are absent from the so-called jeff = 1/2 model. We prove that the strange multipoles contribute to magnetic neutron diffraction, and we estimate their contribution to intensities of Bragg spots for Sr2IrO4. The construct encompasses the jeff = 1/2 model, and it is consistent with the known magnetic structure, ordered magnetic moment, and published resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction data. Over and above time-odd quadrupoles and hexadecapoles, whose contribution changes neutron Bragg intensities by an order of magnitude, according to our estimates, are relatively small triakontadipoles recently proposed as the primary magnetic order-parameter of Sr2IrO4.
