We introduce a class of information measures based on group entropies, allowing us to describe the information-theoretical properties of complex systems. These entropic measures are nonadditive, and are mathematically deduced from a series of natural requirements. In particular, we introduce an extensivity postulate as a natural requirement for an information measure to be meaningful. The information measures proposed are suitably defined for describing universality classes of complex systems, each characterized by a specific phase space growth rate function.

In the past three decades, many theoretical measures of complexity have been proposed to help understand complex systems. In this work, for the first time, we place these measures on a level playing field, to explore the qualitative similarities and differences between them, and their shortcomings. Specifically, using the Boltzmann machine architecture (a fully connected recurrent neural network) with uniformly distributed weights as our model of study, we numerically measure how complexity changes as a function of network dynamics and network parameters. We apply an extension of one such information-theoretic measure of complexity to understand incremental Hebbian learning in Hopfield networks, a fully recurrent architecture model of autoassociative memory. In the course of Hebbian learning, the total information flow reflects a natural upward trend in complexity as the network attempts to learn more and more patterns.
The entropy of Boltzmann-Gibbs, as proved by Shannon and Khinchin, is based on four axioms, where the fourth one concerns additivity. The group theoretic entropies make use of formal group theory to replace this axiom with a more general composabilit y axiom. As has been pointed out before, generalised entropies crucially depend on the number of allowed number degrees of freedom $N$. The functional form of group entropies is restricted (though not uniquely determined) by assuming extensivity on the equal probability ensemble, which leads to classes of functionals corresponding to sub-exponential, exponential or super-exponential dependence of the phase space volume $W$ on $N$. We review the ensuing entropies, discuss the composability axiom, relate to the Gibbs paradox discussion and explain why group entropies may be particularly relevant from an information theoretic perspective.
Motivated by experimental observations of patterning at the leading edge of motile eukaryotic cells, we introduce a general model for the dynamics of nearly-flat fluid membranes driven from within by an ensemble of activators. We include, in particul ar, a kinematic coupling between activator density and membrane slope which generically arises whenever the membrane has a non-vanishing normal speed. We unveil the phase diagram of the model by means of a perturbative field-theoretical renormalization group analysis. Due to the aforementioned kinematic coupling the natural dynamical scaling is acoustic, that is the dynamical critical exponent is 1. However, as soon as the the normal velocity of the membrane is tuned to zero, the system crosses over to diffusive dynamic scaling in mean field. Distinct critical points can be reached depending on how the limit of vanishing velocity is realised: in each of them corrections to scaling due to nonlinear coupling terms must be taken into accounts. The detailed analysis of these critical points reveals novel scaling regimes wich can be accessed with perturbative methods, together with signs of strong coupling behaviour, which establishes a promising ground for further non-perturbative calculations. Our results unify several previous studies on the dynamics of active membrane, while also identifying nontrivial scaling regimes which cannot be captured by passive theories of fluctuating interfaces and are relevant for the physics of living membranes.

In the usual statistical model of a dense polymer (a single space-filling loop on a lattice) in two dimensions the loop does not cross itself. We modify this by including intersections in which {em three} lines can cross at the same point, with some statistical weight w per crossing. We show that our model describes a line of critical theories with continuously-varying exponents depending on w, described by a conformally-invariant non-linear sigma model with varying coupling constant g_sigma^2 >0. For the boundary critical behavior, or the model defined in a strip, we propose an exact formula for the ell-leg exponents, h_ell=g_sigma^2 ell(ell-2)/8, which is shown numerically to hold very well.

We study the conditions under which the critical behavior of the three-dimensional $mn$-vector model does not belong to the spherically symmetrical universality class. In the calculations we rely on the field-theoretical renormalization group approac h in different regularization schemes adjusted by resummation and extended analysis of the series for renormalization-group functions which are known for the model in high orders of perturbation theory. The phase diagram of the three-dimensional $mn$-vector model is built marking out domains in the $mn$-plane where the model belongs to a given universality class.
