By combining Brillouin Light Scattering and micromagnetic simulations we studied the spin-wave dynamics of a Co/Pd thin film multilayer, features a stripe domain structure at remanence. The periodic up and down domains are separated by cork-screw type domain walls. The existence of these domains causes a scattering of the otherwise bulk and surface spin-wave modes, which form mode families, similar to a one dimensional magnonic crystal. The dispersion relation and mode profiles of spin waves are measured for transferred wave vector parallel and perpendicular to the domain axis.

Using Brillouin spectroscopy, the first observation has been made of the band structures of nanostructured defect magnonic crystals. The samples are otherwise one-dimensional periodic arrays of equal-width Ni80Fe20 and cobalt nanostripes, where the d efects are stripes of a different width. A dispersionless defect branch emerges within the bandgap with a frequency tunable by varying the defect stripe width, while the other branches observed are similar to those of a defect-free crystal. Micromagnetic and finite-element simulations performed unveil additional tiny bandgaps and the frequency-dependent localization of the defect mode in the vicinity of the defects.
Determination of the energy of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction along with a definition of the basic magnetic characteristics in ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic multilayered systems are both required for the construction of a magnetic skyrmion recording m edium. A method for estimating the energy of the effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which compared the periodicities of micromagnetically simulated and experimentally measured demagnetized domain structures was shown in a current paper. Symmetric epitaxial [Co/Pd(111)]5 superlattices with Co layers of varying thickness were used as the system for investigation. The structural and magnetic properties of epitaxial [Co(dCo)/Pd]5 superlattices with different Co layers thicknesses were comprehensively investigated. The dependence of the energy of effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the thickness of the Co layers in the [Co(dCo)/Pd]5 multilayered structures was determined. The relationship between Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and asymmetry of the strains between the bottom Pd/Co and top Co/Pd interfaces was discussed. The simulation parameters and the demagnetization approach prior to measuring the magnetic structure influenced the obtained results. Necessity of setting all the layers in micromagnetic simulations was established. The significant influence of interlayer dipolar coupling on the periodicity of simulated labyrinth domain structures was also confirmed.
Brillouin light scattering in ferromagnetic materials usually involves one magnon and two photons and their total angular momentum is conserved. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the presence of a helicity-changing two-magnon Brillouin light scatte ring in a ferromagetic crystal, which can be viewed as a four-wave mixing process involving two magnons and two photons. Moreover, we observe an unconventional helicity-changing one-magnon Brillouin light scattering, which apparently infringes the conservation law of the angular momentum. We show that the crystal angular momentum intervenes to compensate the missing angular momentum in the latter scattering process.
We present the observation of a complete bandgap and collective spin wave excitation in two-dimensional magnonic crystals comprised of arrays of nanoscale antidots and nanodots, respectively. Considering that the frequencies dealt with here fall in t he microwave band, these findings can be used for the development of suitable magnonic metamaterials and spin wave based signal processing. We also present the application of a numerical procedure, to compute the dispersion relations of spin waves for any high symmetry direction in the first Brillouin zone. The results obtained from this procedure has been reproduced and verified by the well established plane wave method for an antidot lattice, when magnetization dynamics at antidot boundaries is pinned. The micromagnetic simulation based method can also be used to obtain iso--frequency countours of spin waves. Iso--frequency contours are analougous of the Fermi surfaces and hence, they have the potential to radicalize our understanding of spin wave dynamics. The physical origin of bands, partial and full magnonic bandgaps has been explained by plotting the spatial distribution of spin wave energy spectral density. Although, unfettered by rigid assumptions and approximations, which afflict most analytical methods used in the study of spin wave dynamics, micromagnetic simulations tend to be computationally demanding. Thus, the observation of collective spin wave excitation in the case of nanodot arrays, which can obviate the need to perform simulations may also prove to be valuable.
Microfocused Brillouin light scattering (BLS) and microwave absorption (MA) are used to study magnon-photon coupling in a system consisting of a split-ring microwave resonator and a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. The split-ring resonantor is defined by optical lithography and loaded with a 1 $mu$m-thick YIG film grown by liquid phase epitaxy. BLS and MA spectra of the hybrid system are simultaneously recorded as a function of the applied magnetic field magnitude and microwave excitation frequency. Strong coupling of the magnon and photon modes is found with a coupling strength of $g_text{eff}/2 pi = 63$ MHz. The combined BLS and MA data allows to study the continuous transition of the hybridized modes from a purely magnonic to a purely photonic mode by varying the applied magnetic field and microwave frequency. Furthermore, the BLS data represent an up-conversion of the microwave frequency coupling to optical frequencies.
