Just over fifty years ago, Pierre Hohenberg developed a rigorous proof of the non-existence of long-range order in a two-dimensional superfluid or superconductor at finite temperatures. The proof was immediately extended by N. D. Mermin and H. Wagner to the Heisenberg ferromagnet and antiferromagnet, and shortly thereafter, by Mermin to prove the absence of translational long-range order in a two-dimensional crystal, whether in quantum or classical mechanics. In this paper, we present an extension of the Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem to give a rigorous proof of the impossibility of long-range ferromagnetic order in an itinerant electron system without spin-orbit coupling or magnetic dipole interactions. We also comment on some situations where there are compelling arguments that long-range order is impossible but no rigorous proof has been given, as well as situations, such as a magnet with long range interactions, or orientational order in a two-dimensional crystal, where long-range order can occur that breaks a continuous symmetry.

We study how universality classes of O(N)-symmetric models depend continuously on the dimension d and the number of field components N. We observe, from a renormalization group perspective, how the implications of the Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg theorem set in as we gradually deform theory space towards d=2. For fractal dimension in the range 2<d<3 we observe, for any N bigger than or equal to 1, a finite family of multi-critical effective potentials of increasing order. Apart for the N=1 case, these disappear in d=2 consistently with the Mermin-Wagner-Hohenberg theorem. Finally, we study O(N=0)-universality classes and find an infinite family of these in two dimensions.
The relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution plays a key role in describing several high-energy and astrophysical effects. Recently, computer simulations favored Juttners as the relativistic generalization of Maxwells distribution for d=1,2,3 s patial dimensions and pointed to an invariant temperature. In this work we argue an invariant temperature naturally follows from manifest covariance. We present a new derivation of the manifestly covariant Juttners distribution and Equipartition Theorem. The standard procedure to get the equilibrium distribution as a solution of the relativistic Boltzmanns equation is here adopted. However, contrary to previous analysis, we use cartesian coordinates in d+1 momentum space, with d spatial components. The use of the multiplication theorem of Bessel functions turns crucial to regain the known invariant form of Juttners distribution. Since equilibrium kinetic theory results should agree with thermodynamics in the comoving frame to the gas the covariant pseudo-norm of a vector entering the distribution can be identified with the reciprocal of temperature in such comoving frame. Then by combining the covariant statistical moments of Juttners distribution a novel form of the Equipartition Theorem is advanced which also accommodates the invariant comoving temperature and it contains, as a particular case, a previous not manifestly covariant form.

The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem plays a fundamental role in density functional theory, which has become a basic tool for the study of electronic structure of matter. In this article, we study the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem for a class of external potentials based on a unique continuation principle.
We prove the vertex-reinforced jump process (VRJP) is recurrent in two dimensions for any translation invariant finite range initial rates. Our proof has two main ingredients. The first is a direct connection between the VRJP and sigma models whose t arget space is a hyperbolic space $mathbb{H}^n$ or its supersymmetric counterpart $mathbb{H}^{2|2}$. These results are analogues of well-known relations between the Gaussian free field and the local times of simple random walk. The second ingredient is a Mermin--Wagner theorem for these sigma models. This result is of intrinsic interest for the sigma models and also implies our main theorem on the VRJP. Surprisingly, our Mermin--Wagner theorem applies even though the symmetry groups of $mathbb{H}^n$ and $mathbb{H}^{2|2}$ are non-amenable.
When granular systems are modeled by frictionless hard spheres, particle-particle collisions are considered as instantaneous events. This implies that while the velocities change according to the collision rule, the positions of the particles are the same before and after such an event. We show that depending on the material and system parameters, this assumption may fail. For the case of viscoelastic particles we present a universal condition which allows to assess whether the hard-sphere modeling and, thus, event-driven Molecular Dynamics simulations are justified.
